They also staged a drama “Amahlondenyuka Obomi” written by Sokhana Mngambi, the secretary of the society. In other cultural activities at the school, GHS was invited to participate in the final round of the Rhodes University high school quiz competition at the 2017 SciFest in Grahamstown. The quiz team – Kerrith Hartley, Joyce Ejumu and Sibo Yapi – came third in the final. GHS chess players participated in the first round of the Border chess trials in East London. The girls did extremely well with U16A Emmanuela Chandia winning 2 out of 5; U18A Nitta Mattam (2/5) and Sherin Simon (won 2/5 and drew 2/5). The areas are being used as hideouts by criminals Picture: ZOLILE MENZELWA Crime and dumping rife in overgrown municipal areas ENOCH Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) is not addressing the issue of overgrown veld in various residential areas which are being used as havens for criminals, writes The Rep senior reporter Zolile Menzelwa. Detailed questions were e-mailed on Monday to EMLM communications manager Fundile Feketshane but no response had been received on Thursday at the time of going to print. The Rep visited Newvale, White City, Ezibeleni and Komani Park to speak to residents about the impact of the unkempt areas. In Newvale, a group of young boys was found in a small tent they had built, saying they rested in it after playing soccer on a makeshift soccer field. Some parents were not pleased with the spot, claiming it was being used for wrongdoing by older boys. “We don’t like our children playing here. We have discovered that boys between 10 and 12 years smoke there. Criminals also hide in the grass and jump people to rob them,” Thembisa Kamana said. She said the issue had been reported to the municipality but no response had been received. Thandiwe Kamana said failure to clean up the overgrown areas was also resulting in the illegal dumping of refuse. Samson Kakaza, whose house is directly in front of the overgrown spot, said criminals were hiding in the veld. “We want this bush removed as people get robbed and we hear cries in the early morning hours and at night but there’s nothing we can do.” Rats were running from the overgrown areas into his home. Mzukisi Mguya of White City said snakes could now be found in the area. “You see that sewer drain there?”he said, pointing out the area to the reporter. “The grass blocks it and we have to live with that smell. People also cross here when they go to town and they are constantly robbed.” He said the municipal political leadership only knew people during election time and that people did not feel safe in their homes. His sentiments were shared by Elversia Phillips of Komani Park. She lives across the street from the children's park. She said if a car parked inside the park, it could not be seen as a result of the grass. The situation posed a health risk with rats and cockroaches abounding in the area. Children of the area were also being deprived of their right to play. Phillips said her vehicle had been broken into once while parked inside the yard. She said she and her family had moved into a better area for safety but the area was now worsening. The only positive was that residents from the area looked out for one a n ot h e r. In Ezibeleni a resident, who asked not to be named, said the situation in Zone 1 was particularly bad over weekends. Criminals, he said, took over the overgrown areas people used as short cuts. Other neglected and overgrown areas could be seen in Top Town and parts of Westbourne.

I am working as a freelancer doing paintings, drawings and digital art.” Most of his artworks deal with issues about the ego. “I find it interesting that, as human beings we are Hip Hop artist’s project has nostalgic tone ZOLILE MENZELWA A MLUNGISI hip hop artist, songwriter and producer, Chuma Hlawula, with the stage name Chum, has produced a 14-track extended play (EP) project due for release on April 9. Hlawula said the project What If Summer Never Comes, comprised afrocentric hip hop with a nostalgic sound. His love of music led to him forming a poetry and rhythm and blues group in high school. The film production graduate from the University of Johannesburg said his first EP was listed among the top five downloaded mixtapes in Africa in 2009 by Music of Africa online music host site. “I started working on the album in 2015. The journey has been challenging but being an artist is something I have always wanted. The love of music sustains me,” Chum said. He has received airplay on a number of stations including Vukani FM, Lukhanji FM, TruFM and Radio DUT. He said he was featured in the hip hop magazine HYPE last year as part of an upcoming hip hop acts fe at u r e . Chum said he was going on a tour with deep house sensation DJ Blaque through Europe, Greece and the UK, Spain, Asia, Indonesia and USA. “I would like to add that my EP will be available on the internet and people should look out for the link.” in the universe but yet we still think we are important. We are just a dot and there are seven billion people. We have to transcend the ego. I also do paintings on the beauty of the human figure.” He specialises in oil and acrylic. “I also use water colours but I find these bland. If you consider your hardships, you are going to choose another profession but 10 salaries down the line you are going to start questioning your decision.” Mazule finds social media a good place to display his paintings.
