On April 27, the day which marked these landmark elections, South Africans who are old enough to have voted on the day, will cast their minds back to an event which was filled with the triumph of the human spirit and celebration of a country which could look forward to a future filled with hope. Much has happened since then, and many people will indicate that such hope has lessened extensively in the wake of growing unemployment, corruption, dissatisfaction with service delivery, racial disharmony, crime, dissent with President Jacob Zuma and reports of state capture and the economic downturn. As South Africans, we do forget how far we’ve come from the days of apartheid. We forget how much we share in terms of passion for our country. We forget how many challenges we have overcome and how that which unites us, is indeed far more than that which divides us. We are hard on ourselves and possibly that is as it should be. Building a country is no easy task and a country with a history like ours requires a people unlike any other. It requires a people who put others first, a people who put aside the blindness brought about by hatred and greed to ensure a clear vision of what is needed to make South Africa better – fo r everyone who lives here. Freedom is a fickle term. No-one is ever really completely free from responsibility – for other human beings, for their community, for their country. During April, let’s put South Africa first. Let’s focus on what we can do together to make this a better place to live in. It’s going to require selflessness, forgiveness, empathy, loyalty, dedication and drive – all the qualities for which we are known. It will require us all to get involved in making change happen. Are you in? Manufacturing key to youth jobs WHILE we are watching the goings-on in the highest office in the land, not knowing if Finance Minister Pravhin Gordhan will stay or go, there are other pressurising issues facing this country. The youth unemployment rate late last year was at 54.2%, meaning that every second young person is unemployed. This should set alarm bells ringing. With our education system basically churning out functionally illiterate and poorly taught young people, matters are far from ideal. Sporadic eruptions of “xenophobic” attacks and destructive service delivery protests are but symptoms of the rising level of hopelessness of the youth. We recently saw marches by university graduates who have failed to secure jobs. If these highly educated young people cannot find jobs, how much worse are those who are high school dropouts or those with no post-matric qualification? While I was listening to a radio station on Wednesday, I stumbled on to a discussion about China and its manufacturing costs. There are three types of cost considered by an investor: direct costs which are costs of production such as electricity, materials and wages; indirect costs which are transport costs to market and challenging business environment and invisible costs such as interruptions due to loss because of power supply, corruption and lack of security. South Africa has a lot going for it on all these three cost factors and is comparable to China. Many products we consume are made in China because of its famed low labour costs. However, China has begun to pay the price for its efficiency as its labour costs, including wages, have begun to climb quite sharply while productivity has remained the same. This has meant that all of a sudden our country is now a IN TOUCH ... with Phumelele P Hlati viable option. We also are fav o u r a b l y l o c at e d g e o g r a p h i c a l l y, politically we are stable (notwithstanding the president’s shenanigans with Gordhan), we have a reliable power supply and our economic policies are sound. This is why the abrupt cancellation of the investor roadshow to the west of Gordhan and others is so calamitous. With the narrowing of the gap with China, this was an ideal opportunity to attract off-shore investment and thereby provide the much-needed employment that would solve the huge youth unemployment challenge. Zuma’s reckless actions portrayed us as a country that does things on a whim. The plan to sell South Africa to investors runs the risk of being undone. South Africa needs investment in the labour-intensive sectors, which includes manufacturing. The weak rand gives us an opportunity to profit from it. To solve youth unemployment, manufacturing is the key. A: Music is my calling and now that music has found me, I do not dream of doing anything else. Music is a gift that I inherited from my parents and my ancestors. Q: What are you working on at present? A: I am finishing my research on black South African women in jazz. I am also rehearsing to perform at Café Beaulla in Komani and at H e m i n g way s Mall in East London this weekend. Q: Would you say there is a jazz market in the Chris Hani District Municipality and in the Eastern Cape? A: Komani used to be known as the “little jazz town”, but now the jazz market has died down here. As jazz musicians, we need to organise ourselves to build our local economy. I started the Monti Jazz Appreciation Society to bring jazz musicians and their audiences together in East London. One of our proudest moments was when we invited Pinise Saul to perform. Q: What are the latest trends in jazz? A: What I have observed is that successful South African jazz musicians today are independent and they are not signed to major record labels. When it comes to their sound, they refuse to be put into a stereotypical box. Jazz musicians such as Omagugu, Lindiwe Maxolo and Kyle Shepherd are differentiating their sounds. Q: What type of music do you listen to and who is on your playlist? A: I listen to all kinds of music. My playlist includes Omagugu, Nduduzo Makhathini, Cameron Lundy, Zoe Modiga, Robert Glasper, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald. Q: Your best childhood memor y? A: When we used to go to my dad’s home in Ngqamakhwe to visit our grandmother. My dad would play the accordion and everyone would be happy and dance. Please limit letters to 250 words or less Do not politicise efforts to rebuild KOMANI resident writes: So the EFF in their “wisdom” through their chief whip, Luthando Amos, have decided that the local municipality have “sold to the white people”. This in spite of the fact that out of 13 members of the elected crisis committee, only three are white. This shows their ignorance of the facts. Is the chief whip confusing cooperation and concern for the town with politics? Maybe he was concerned that at the meeting motivated by the Border Kei Chamber of Business and called for by the mayor, whose office issued the invitations, the majority of attendees were white. Politicising an important issue is counter-productive Please buckle up children CONCERNED Motorist of Komani writes: I am horrified by the number of motorists who are driving with young children standing on the back seat or even the front seat. All it takes is for the driver to make a sudden stop or have to swerve for another car – or even to collide with another vehicle in the busy streets of Komani – and the child will be flung through the windscreen or from the vehicle. It is not only an illegal practice, but also and will serve to ensure the demise/ retrogression of the town, as we have seen in the past 10 years or so. If the EFF has the interests of the town at heart it should encourage business, no matter ownership, to participate in making Komani great again. a very dangerous one. Children need to be secured – either in a car seat or by a safety belt. It is not safe and it is definitely not fair to the child or other motorists, who may then indirectly be responsible for the death or serious injury of a child, to continue with this practice. I beg of parents and/or motorists who travel with young children in their vehicles to do the right thing. Please do not think that it’s not going to happen to you.
