This month Neil Butterworth reflects on the current role of
local churches. With attendance figures falling, the local
churches have diminished in their formal role of bringing
community groups together. Neil writes about St James’s,
St Thomas’s, Sacred Heart Church, St Stephens and Ogden
Baptist Church.
The ‘From the Archives’ article this month focuses on the
Norden Riviera which back in the 1930’s was extremely
popular attracting visitors from all over Rochdale and
surrounding areas.
We were recently talking to Neil Butterworth who confirmed
how popular the Streetwise magazine is amongst the
residents in Milnrow and Newhey who enjoy the great mix
of local businesses advertising their services as well as local
information. We try and make it as relevant and interesting
as we can each month and are always grateful for new ideas
and articles.
Enjoy this issue, keep it handy and until next month…..
The Norden Riviera
As the decade of the 1930’s opened, boom times must have seemed to be well and truly a thing of a past and by
1932 the number of registered unemployed in the North was as high as 70% in some areas of the North of England. Not
until the mid-1930’s did things began to improve in cotton manufacture, the building trade and allied industries and
against this backdrop a new consumerist society was starting to emerge delivering automatic washing machines,
radios, vacuum cleaners and cars for a new working class needing ‘playgrounds’ in which to spend its time, whether
these were in the form of cinemas, parks or swimming pools.
This ‘leisure industry’ was apparent in Rochdale too where there were twelve cinemas, two theatres and dance halls such as the
Carlton Ballroom. Health was also an established concern at that time and it was this mix of health and exercise that opened the
way for lidos to be built nationally, supported by government funding with more than £2.5 million made available for local authorities.
The Norden Riviera was part of this, but was a lido with an industrial past. Tenterhouse Dyeing and Bleaching Company in Norden
had been founded by Mr J T Taylor but included in his ownership was an area around Tenterhill to the north of Edenfield Road as
well as the hillside immediately above the works which, until the 1920s, had been the site of anabandoned seminary. When Higher
Tenterhouseand the nearby works were demolished in the early 1930’s, they abandoned land that had been made into a bowling
green, tennis courts and badminton courts for the workers, and it was at this point that the directors of Old Manor (Pastimes) Ltd
took a lease from Bleachers Association Ltd to convert the old bowling green into a swimming pool and the tennis courts and old
pavilion into a tea room and café. The lease agreed, work commenced in 1934 on making this vision a reality.
A meeting in November of 1935 decided that the venture was to be called
‘The Riviera’although Rochdale people called it the Riviera from that time
onward. Naming it as such was part of a trend at the time for all things
continental. The plan put forward was that it would include not only a
swimming ‘bath’ and a children’s paddling pool, but also gardens, a
dance hall and tea room, badminton (in the main hall) and tennis courts,
a nine-hole miniature golf course, indoor recreations and facilities for
horse riding.
The official opening of the Norden Riviera was on April 27th 1936 and
included a Carnival Dance and a high diving display (2/6d admission).
Dances, in the early days of the Riviera were popular and held every
Saturday throughout July and August with a 3-piece band also engaged for Tuesday
night sessions. Catering was supplied by Rochdale’s Bob Bon café until 1954 after which visitors could buy only tea and biscuits,
minerals and ice cream. In the evening you could dance or be waited on at pool-side by page boys wearing white uniforms (with gilt
buttons !).
Things never last though. By 1942, parts of the Riviera buildings and diving boards were in serious need of repair and at the end
of the war arrangements were made for re-painting throughout and re-laying the café floor whilst other parts of the estate were
patched up. By 1957 the condition of the pool and gardens was ‘very
bad’and this coincided with a national decline of the lido in the face
of leisure alternatives, television in particular. When overseas travel
became popular, local attractions such as the Norden Riviera became
less popular again.
Attendance through the 1950’s and 1960’s had been sporadic, but
on good days the place would be packed, the Rochdale Observer
reporting that ‘In 1961 there were over 3000 paying visitors to the
site,’ the Riviera taking £200 on one Sunday alone. This, however,
was an exception.
Due to poor weather, changes in social culture and the rising cost
of the lease, the Riviera closed as an operation in 1966, the Observer suggesting that Rochdale summers
had never been hot enough to make it a money spinner and that although it had always just about ‘paid its way’ it had only
returned a dividend to shareholders once or twice in its history and that was in the early years.
Not with standing its position nestling within the windswept Pennine hills, the Norden Riviera would have provided great days out
for many people in and around Rochdale eager to swim, dance or relax, and there must have been real sadness at its closure.
THE HISTORY OF
Horse Carrs Manor House
Horse Carrs Manor is a grand Victorian building that nestles in the heart of Shawclough and was originally
the family home of Thomas Watson, one of Rochdale’s unsung heroes.
Built of polished Astley Stone, Horse Carrs was completed in 1866 for the grand
sum of £3,500, and according to an entry within Watson’s Journal, the build of
Horse Carrs was given to W.A. Peters and Sons of Rochdale, the accredited builders
of the Rochdale Town Hall. The Journal also records that John Ashworth was
commissioned to paint the new house at the princely rate of seven old pence (7d)
per square yard,
(equating to just a
smidgen more than
2.5 pence in
today’s money).
On entering the Manor through the main entrance, it would have
been difficult not to be impressed by the stained glass door panel
that depicts the
Watson’s coat of arms, and the grand entrance hall, decorated by elaborate floor
tiles, a large wall mirror and a sweeping staircase, all of which is surmounted by
a skylight which, weather allowing floods the hall in natural light. Records also
suggest that the hallway was embellished by a life-size marble statue of Moses
in the Basket, an artefact that sadly is no-longer resident in Horse Carrs.
However, there is a preserved collection of Plush Fabric (a type of brushed velvet)
which was invented and manufactured by Watson within his Silk Mill (Horse
Carrs Silk Mill, Shawclough), and would have undoubtedly been used to add a
splash of colour throughout the family home as curtains and soft furnishings.
Clearly in its day, Horse Carrs was a house that befitted the social standing of a man
that was not only a philanthropist, but also a Godly man who used his wealth to
serve the local community. In addition to serving as a Justice of the Peace and
Chairman of the Rochdale School Board, Watson also gifted the original Rochdale
Infirmary, as well as financing a number of local church and education enterprises.
Throughout its 150 years of existence Horse Carrs has established itself as
something of a lighthouse of refuge within the community. Beyond being the
Watson’s home, the Manor has opened its doors to accommodate; a Men’s refuge
during WW1, a safe haven for WW2 Evacuees from occupied Channel Islands, an
annex to the Municipal Girls High School, and a Council Home for the Elderly
before becoming the Emanuel Christian School. Then in more recent years Horse
Carrs become the new spiritual home for what is historically Rochdale’s First
Baptist Church - now known as the Open Door Baptist Church. In fact the
relationship between the church and Horse Carrs is also worth a mention, for
though Thomas Watson was a lifelong Methodist, his wife Emily and many of
their children were committed members of the fore mentioned Baptist Church –
then known as the West Street Baptist Church.
Today Horse Carrs continues to serve the local community through an Open Door
fellowship of Christian Worship (Sunday mornings), the Coffee House (Thursdays
and Fridays), ‘POPS’ a Toddlers Group (Thursday Mornings), along with a number
of other activities and community services throughout the week. There is also the
‘Free’ exhibition that portrays the collective stories of the Watson Family, Horse
Carrs Manor and West Street Baptist Church (Open Thursdays 12:30-3.30 &
Fridays 10-3.30), full details available: http://www.horsecarrscoffee.co.uk/
Where did you worship?
One night last week on my way home from collecting the petition against business rate hikes for our local
hostelries I was musing on how fast this world of ours is changing. It is said that most of the jobs our present
university students will be doing when they graduate have not even been invented yet; such is the pace of
technological change! These articles for Streetwise are not only to stimulate debate
but also to reflect on the accelerating speed of change we are experiencing in this, the
early part of the 21st century… The role of local churches, like that of pubs has
lessened over the past 30 years. Not only have the numbers of churches fallen along
with attendances, but also the social value of gluing together communities who look out
for one another has also reduced. We all know St James’s church, but did you know that
it consists of at least two listed buildings and some listed graves (details available.) The
story of two of the villages listed buildings represents the social history of the village,
with the rich building the church whilst the poor funded the building of the laundry, the
latter, although listed is in a terrible state of disrepair…
St Thomas’s, Newhey is also listed despite being almost completely rebuilt following the
terrible fire a few years ago. Sacred Heart RC church, although a more recent building,
Councillor Butterworth inside Ogden Baptist
Church alongside Mrs Susan Strand
represents a lot of history. St Stephens is now
reinvented as a site for housing whilst the
worshippers now travel to Littleborough for
services. Ogden Baptist Church was built back in 1783 and was nestled in the
picturesque hamlet until 1972. It is now located at the top of Cedar Lane, Newhey,
where it goes from strength to strength. It always puzzles me that unfortunately we are
unable to use the venue for voting, whereas Moorhouse Methodist Church and St. Anne’s
Belfield both allow us access?
I have detailed above the Church of England, Roman Catholic, United Reformed, Baptists
and Methodist churches, but do you know if there was ever a Quakers Meeting House,
Salvation Army or Bethel Chapel or other persuasions in the area? I would love to
know…… The Important social role of churches in the 1940s and 50s cannot be
overstated, with the majority of villagers attending church and even turning out on
Saturdays to play in church football and cricket teams and walking round the parish on
the Whit Walk. I remember getting a new set of clothes for Summer in readiness for the walk and going round to neighbours
houses to show them off whilst collecting some pennies of sweets, does that still continue I wonder? The church football and
cricket teams were the mainstay of local leagues, though few exist now and there are even less pitches than there once was. Can
anyone tell me where the playing fields belonging to St Thomas’s are? – Clue, they’re in Newhey! Perhaps I shouldn’t muse on
these things so much after visiting the local Hostelries! Good luck and continued prosperity to all,
MILNROW LIBRARY
HEALTH WALKS
The month of May has now arrived bringing warmer weather and a good incentive to go outdoors for a country
walk. A favourite circular walk of the Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group, starting from and returning to the
Library, encompasses the Newhey section of the Rochdale Way. The Route is simple to follow, just have suitable
outdoor walking shoes or boots, and a coat to protect you depending on the weather. A hiking pole and a mobile
phone are worth taking as well as a cool drink. OS sheet SO81/91 or A to Z Newhey covers the area of this walk.
The Route is simple to follow, just have suitable outdoor walking shoes or boots, and a coat to protect you depending upon the
weather. A hiking pole and a mobile phone are worth taking. OS sheet SO 81/91 or A - Z Newhey to Shaw covers the area of the
walk.
Take the high path, left,
which passes the Grade II
listed War Memorial on
the right, and extends up
through the woodlands
and beyond the wild bird feeding station, emerging at a single width path
at the end of the park perimeter wall. Follow this path, between fields,
emerging at Lower Bradley and Newhey St Thomas Church (built
1875). Continue down Church Street past Newhey St Thomas C of E
Primary School (built 1865) and on to the A640 Huddersfield Road. Turn
left; go across the road, and then right along Haugh Lane. This brings you
to the picturesque hamlet of Haugh with its charming stone sett paved
road and ancient small stone cottages (circa 1788).
The Route
Leaving the Library on Newhey Road, turn left and proceed under the motorway
bridge and left into Milnrow Memorial Park.
Here you pass the Cedar Tree Restaurant and a play area for children. Proceed up Haugh Fold.
Bear right at the Garden House and up the signposted private road. This is a steep incline, so take
time to rest half way up, and admire the panoramic views; Dunwood and Whitfield to the
west; Newhey with dominant landmarks, Ellenroad Engine House Chimney and St Thomas
Church Steeple, to the north; and Newhey Quarry to the east. Rochdale and Scout Moor extend
across the horizon.
Continue up the road to Top o' th' Hill Farm. Opposite the farmhouse and before the cottage (circa 1777) on
the left, is a steel field gate. Go through the gate; you are now on a section of the Rochdale Way. Proceed
along the field track, but as the track bears right, go straight ahead with the drystone wall on your left, bringing
52 Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines
you to a gap with a way marker in the corner of the field.
Continue through the gap and proceed along a paved path with a wire fence to your right,
over a stile with a way marker, straight on over a section of wooden staging (it can be
muddy and wet here) to a double stile. Proceed forward to a step-over gap with large way
marker post, followed by a smaller stile. Cross over a culverted stream and head up the
field track a short distance before bearing left at the marker post. Head for three small
'mounds' (old quarry excavations) then down left through the gap in the corner of the
field. Here you can look down & observe the Stone Circle.
Proceed down the path which emerges onto the A640 Huddersfield Road. Take great care
crossing the road at this junction; it is on a blind bend and there is the danger of fast
moving traffic! Go left down Huddersfield Rd then right into Ogden Lane, then first left
before Greenhalgh Bleach
and Dye Works, and head
towards Rough
Bank. Follow the tarmac
road round the works, when
it becomes a stone sett
bridleway which rises
steeply. Follow the
bridleway which leads to Rough Bank Farm (circa 1607) on the left and a
modernised Higher Rough Bank Farm on the right. Continue along and go
through Rough Farm,
pass through the steel
farmyard gate and
down Back Lane, following a roughly paved path between the fields.
At the junction of the path, the M62 motorway is in the foreground, and Scout Moor
and surrounding hills along the horizon. Turn left and follow the path which
broadens out into Newfield Head Lane. Continue down the stone sett lane, under the
motorway subway, down Moy Hill and Water Lane emerging at Butterworth Hall and
the Waggon Inn (circa 1782.)
Cross Royds Street and arrive back at Milnrow Library completing a 3.8 mile walk.
The Walk and Talk Group meet at Milnrow Library for a different 60 to 90 minute
walk every Monday (except public holidays) leaving the Library at 10am. The Walks
Milnrow and Newhey Carnival –
The Place to be on Saturday 24th June
Milnrow and Newhey will be the place to be on Saturday 24th June 2017 as many people line the streets to
watch Milnrow and Newhey Carnival parade and attend the summer fete afterwards at Milnrow Memorial
Park.
The carnival committee aim to maintain tradition, contributing their time voluntarily to organise a village carnival, which is now in it’s 49th
year. The event brings together the local community with a procession from Newhey to Milnrow and is followed by a fete with stalls and
activities. We encourage Rochdale’s residents to participate, by promoting the event in the months preceding each year’s summer
carnival. Local groups can make their presence known and relationships are forged. Children and adults alike dress in fancy-dress and a fun
day is had by all. The event is promoted throughout the local press and online and projects a positive image of Rochdale from within.
This year the committee are delighted to announce that Springhill Hospice will be their sole chosen charity for 2017 and 2018. Paul Kettle,
Chairman to the carnival, commented "We are proud to raise valuable funds for such a fantastic charity which touches the lives of so many in
our local community".
The parade starts at 1pm at Haugh Lane, Newhey. The parade proceeds down Huddersfield Road, turns right towards Milnrow, up Newhey
Road, continues through Milnrow, turns left onto Station Road, past Holroyds and then turns right onto Dale Street. It continues up through
Milnrow and terminates at Milnrow Memorial Park for a Summer Fete.
Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, with the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale Cllr Ian Duckworth and Mrs Christine Duckworth. Local
schools are once again supporting the event along with pre-schools and many local groups. In particular, watch out for Milnrow Pre-School
Playgroup in the parade and at the park who will be celebrating their 50th year of being open anniversary.
As a special treat this year, The British Stock Car Drivers Association
(BSCDA) will be entering 8-12 cars in the parade!
Stock Car Racing took the tracks by storm in 1954 and the first season
of racing was hectic, with no rules as such. If the sport was going to
survive it needed to get itself organised. The British Stock Car Drivers
Association (BSCDA) was founded on 12th February 1955 at a meeting
in London's Holborn Hall by the Southern drivers. Two days later in
Halifax the Northern drivers met up and formed their BSCDA and at a
subsequent meeting in Sheffield in late January 1956 the Northern
drivers were joined by the Southern drivers and the two organisations
were merged. Midland drivers were also incorporated making the
BSCDA a single fully National Organisation.
The Sport now really could move forward, the BSCDA was set up to look after the
interests of the drivers and the sport as a whole. The BSCDA could work
effectively with Promoters for the good of the sport, a perfect example was the
formation of the Board of Control in 1958, which agreed rules and regulations all
to benefit everyone involved and allow the world of Stock Car Racing to grow.
Anyone can join the BSCDA and become an Associate Member where you will receive all
newsletters and information about the BSCDA. Another way of becoming involved is
joining the Association as a sponsor, whether it is for a race series or an advert in the
newsletter there are many sponsorship opportunities available. The BSCDA celebrated
their 60th year during 2015 and are continuing to make the sport of Formula I Stock
Car Racing a spectacle to watch nationwide. For more information their website
is www.bscda.com and their Twitter feed is @BSCDAF1. They can also be found on
Facebook under 'British Stock Car Drivers Association'.
Another exciting new entry will be from the MNBG (Milnrow & Newhey Bridleways
Group). This group would describe themselves as 'a group of ordinary folk who love
nothing better than to enjoy the great outdoors on the back of their trusty steads'. The
group reformed in June 2016 after taking the reins from the infamous "Galloping
Grannies" who started the group back in the early 1990s. Their aim is to keep local
bridleway routes open and properly maintained to give riders access to safe, off-road
riding, allowing people of all ages to enjoy the great outdoors and a healthier lifestyle.
They aim to promote these routes to encourage young riders to use them and to preserve
them for future generations.
To achieve this, they ride the bridleways to keep them in use, share route information with
each other, new members, non-rider users and visitors, encourage young riders to use the
bridleways through events and promotion, work with the Council Rights of Way team to bring
awareness of maintenance and/ or obstruction issues and fundraise to aid maintenance of
bridleways and contribute to the local community. Their email address is
mnbggroup@gmail.com and their website is http://www.mnbg.co.uk, they can also be
found on Facebook.
For one parade entry this is a very a special year indeed. Milnrow Pre-School Playgroup are
celebrating their 50th year of being open anniversary they would love for all people past and
present to join them in the parade for the carnival walk and then for their Tea Party in the
Milnrow Memorial Park. Milnrow Pre-School have taken part in Milnrow and Newhey Carnival
for many years, although they used to be called Milnrow Playgroup, they are still the same dedicated people providing the same
excellent service. Their theme this year is Alice in Wonderland and once they arrive at Milnrow Memorial Park they will be selling hot and cold
drinks with cakes and biscuits. Alongside the refreshment stall there will be a tombola stall and a mystery jar stall. So, if you ever attended
Milnrow Pre-School or are a parent of a former or present child, have ever worked there, or were a trustee please come along and support their
good cause and help them to celebrate 50 years of Milnrow Pre-School Playgroup.
Entry is free to the park where there will be live music from Soul City Sound, a funfair for all ages, paintball and a wide variety of stalls.
Last year we had a record number of entries in the parade and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. Despite the rain the sense of
camaraderie and goodwill in the village was evident as the local community came out to support the day. This year's theme is 'Once upon a
time....bring your stories to life' and trophies will be awarded to the best groups or individuals.
If anyone would like to enter the parade, have a stall at the park or would like more information regarding the event, please contact the
Carnival Secretary on 07786850266 or email milnrowcarnival@yahoo.com.
Chocolate and Spice
Hot Cross Buns
April’s meeting featured a talk from cake maker turned flower arranger, Kathleen, from
Chadderton. Kathleen has previously demonstrated in Gibralter and the Isle of Man. She
was very informative and funny and discussed Environmental Art; to you and me this is
flower arranging outside! Who knew that Miss Piggy Roses don’t have much smell and that
Hyacinths didn’t like foam. If you want to know which supermarket sells the best flowers
come along to the next meeting and we’ll tell you!
Ingredients
zest and juice 1 large orange
Sunflower oil for greasing
For the dough and crosses
225ml semi-skimmed milk
50g unsalted butter, plus extra for
greasing
1 large egg
450g strong white bread flour, plus
extra for dusting
2 tsp fast-action yeast
50g golden caster sugar
Method
Make the dough first. Heat the milk in a pan until
steaming. Remove from the heat, and drop in the
butter. After a couple of mins, beat in the egg and
half the orange zest. The liquid should be just warm
for step 2.
Mix the strong flour, yeast, 1 tsp salt and the sugar in
a large bowl, then tip in the liquid and stir to make a
soft dough without dry patches. Flour the work
surface and your hands, then knead the dough for 5-
10 mins until smooth and elastic. Use a stand mixer
or processor if you like. Oil a large bowl, sit the dough
inside it, then cover with oiled cling film. Rise in a
warm place for about 1 hr or until doubled in size.
Put the raisins and half the orange juice in a small
pan or covered bowl, and either simmer for a few
mins or microwave on High for 1 min until hot. Cool
completely. Break the chocolate into a food
processor with the cinnamon and 2 tbsp sugar, then
pulse until very finely chopped. Mix in the rest of the
zest. If you don’t have a processor, chop it by hand or
grate it, then mix with the other ingredients.
Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and
press it out to a large rectangle, a little bigger than A4
paper. Scatter it evenly with the chocolate mix and
For the flavouring and glaze
140g raisins
100g chocolate 70% cocoa solids
1 tsp ground cinnamon
4 tbsp golden caster sugar
100g plain flour
the raisins, which should have absorbed all of the
juice (drain them if not). Roll the dough up around the
filling, then knead it well for a few mins until the
chocolate and fruit are evenly spread. Some raisins
and chocolate will try to escape, but keep kneading
them back in.
Grease then line a large baking sheet with baking
parchment. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces.
Shape into buns by pinching each ball of dough into a
purse shape, concentrating on making the
underneath of the ball (which will be the top) as
smooth as you can. Put the buns, smooth-side up,
onto the baking sheet, leaving room for rising. Cover
loosely with oiled cling film and prove in a warm place
for 30-45 mins or until the dough has risen and
doesn’t spring back quickly when prodded gently.
Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. To make the
paste for the crosses, gradually stir 6-7 tbsp water
into the plain flour to make a smooth, thick paste,
then put in a food bag and snip off the end to about
5mm. Pipe the crosses, then bake for 20-25 mins
until the buns are risen and dark golden brown.
Mix the rest of the orange juice with the remaining
sugar and let it dissolve. Brush the syrup over the
buns while they are hot, then leave to cool. Eat on
the day of baking, or toast the next day.
