what type are you?
The style of house that is most
suited to your family will depend
on a lot of dynamics. How many
kids? What are their ages? Do you
host a lot of company, or perhaps
boarders or elderly parents? Here
are some of Lakewood’s most
common house styles.
The ranch house is laid out entirely on
one floor, often with a built-in garage.
Some will have basements.
The colonial, the country’s most
popular house style, is a 2-3 story
home, which separates the bedrooms
on the upper floor(s) from
the daytime living space, located
on ground level.
A bi-level opens to face two halfflights
of stairs, one leading up to
the majority of the living space —
the kitchen, dining room, and some
bedrooms — and the other leading
down, often to 1-2 bedrooms, a
family room or study, laundry
room, and perhaps a garage.
A cape is generally one-and-ahalf
stories, with a steep roof with
dormers. The facade is typically
simple and unadorned.
The split-level has multiple levels of
living space — usually family room and
garage on the lower level (while still
not underground), then dining area
and kitchen on the middle (main) level,
and bedrooms above. Other ways of
splitting the floors are available too.
