of the motions of piano-keys in motion, but the<br />
little child who plays by ear does not know it, nor<br />
indeed does the greatest pianist know it.<br />
A nightingale<br />
can draw harmony out of the atmosphere;<br />
mathematics can not. A spiritual activity then is<br />
able to reconcile, for us, the antithesis of these problems.<br />
Sometimes that activity must be stern; sometimes<br />
the struggle against sin must proceed without<br />
the sense of God's perfect joy and rest in labor.<br />
But<br />
evil can be destroyed through the grace of God and<br />
the effort of the forgiven soul. The will can be<br />
proved free both by using it<br />
and by surrendering it.<br />
Even "a first cause" can partly be understood, as<br />
we shall presently see.<br />
All these facts are clearly enough suggested in the<br />
Bible.<br />
They are In the plan of creation and the plan<br />
of salvation, and these plans are one. It Is a little<br />
unfashionable today to<br />
speak of the plan of salvation,<br />
and Indeed the phrase may be abused. Man<br />
Is<br />
not so well acquainted with the plans of God as<br />
some theologians have assumed. But that God<br />
has a plan of creation and salvation, that he has an<br />
eternal and joyful purpose—to deny this is to adopt<br />
the planlessness of eternal energy, and the purposelessness<br />
of eternal death.<br />
