SPIRITUAL SABBATHISM
in the New Testament eig-ht times. Six of these
times are in the Gospels, and all refer to the same
day. These references are as follows (Revised
Version) :
"Now late on the sabbath day as it began to
dawn toward the first day of the week, came
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the
sepulchre." Matt, xxviii, i.
"And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magd/alene,
and Mary the mother of James and Salome,
bought spices that they might come and
anoint him. And very early on the first day of
the week they came to the tomb, when the sun
was risen," Mark xvi, i, 2.
The day is also named in Mark xvi, 9, which
is an addition to the genuine^ Gospel. Nevertheless
we count it as one of the eight times.
"And on the sabbath they rested according to
the commandment. But on the first day of the
week at early dawn they came unto the tomb,
bringing the spices which they had prepared."
Luke xxiv, i,
"The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene
early, when it was yet dark and seeth the
stone taken away from the tomb." John xx, i.
"When therefore it was evening on that day,
the first day of the week, and when the doors
were shut where the disciples were, for fear of
the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst,
and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." John
XX, 19,
All these references are to one and the same
day. They show that on that day the news of
Christ's resurrection was brought to the disciples.
They show nothing more.
