THE PRESENT SITUATION.
§25. The decay of Sunday.—History is an organic
whole, and the history of the world, as
Schiller said, is the judgment of the world.
Men's attitude toward sacred time is quite as
instructive now as it ever was. In America today
there is every typical attitude ever taken toward
the Sabbath and the Sunday.
And first let us generously and gladly acknowledge
that the instinct for Spiritual Sabbathism is
not dead. We have endeavored in the preceding
pages to be not only impartial, but appreciative.
We have granted the light which lighteth every man
coming into the world, and we have searched for
it in forbidding places, even perhaps in forbidden
places.
And we are not to close in a fanatical spirit
a discussion which at the beginning we declared to
concern the broadest interests of the race. Wherever
men will to express their faith in the eternal
by consecrating their work and rest in time, there
