THE PRESENT SITUATION.<br />

§25. The decay of Sunday.—History is an organic<br />

whole, and the history of the world, as<br />

Schiller said, is the judgment of the world.<br />

Men's attitude toward sacred time is quite as<br />

instructive now as it ever was. In America today<br />

there is every typical attitude ever taken toward<br />

the Sabbath and the Sunday.<br />

And first let us generously and gladly acknowledge<br />

that the instinct for <strong>Spiritual</strong> <strong>Sabbathism</strong> is<br />

not dead. We have endeavored in the preceding<br />

pages to be not only impartial, but appreciative.<br />

We have granted the light which lighteth every man<br />

coming into the world, and we have searched for<br />

it in forbidding places, even perhaps in forbidden<br />

places.<br />

And we are not to close in a fanatical spirit<br />

a discussion which at the beginning we declared to<br />

concern the broadest interests of the race. Wherever<br />

men will to express their faith in the eternal<br />

by consecrating their work and rest in time, there<br />
