We are extremely excited to announce that we are now offering Russian Volume Lashes!
Having completed training with the world renowned lash technician and Judge
Loreta Jasilionyte, we are now offering this amazing treatment. We are one of the first
salons in the area to offer genuine Volume lashes!
What are Russian Volume Lashes?
Whereas traditional Semi Permanent Lashes
consist of 1 lash applied to 1 natural lash,
volume lashes are a number of lashes hand
made in to a fan and applied to each
individual lash. This gives a much fuller,
fluffier and featherlike appearance whilst still
feeling completely weightless.
Cathy Cartwright
Fresh Thinking
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
Are you stressed or anxious? Unable to cope?
Would you like to enjoy life more?
One of the most common reasons clients come to see me about is the effects of stress and
anxiety on their lives. In fact, I’d say around 95% of my clients come to see me because they are
experiencing anxiety in some form or other.
Stress is a normal human emotion and one which everyone experiences at some point in their
lives e.g. sitting an exam or attending a job interview. As such, this emotion serves us well. It is
part of our emotional alarm system and motivates us to prepare for events, enhancing our
performance. However, when people feel stressed and anxious most of the time, their worries
can spiral out of control. Once this happens, it can feel like their lives are being sabotaged by
anxiety.
Anxiety can manifest itself in a number of ways – symptoms can include insomnia, panic attacks,
lack of confidence, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), feeling depressed, constantly over worrying,
over eating and/or drinking. Over a period of time, anxiety can gradually build up without us being
aware. Some people may feel a constant level of negativity pervading, or suffer with low selfesteem
and a lack of confidence. Anxiety can also affect people to the extreme where they are
unable to leave their house, or can’t work, some find it hard to drive or cope in social situations.
We have a conscious and subconscious part in our brains. The subconscious mind is responsible
for our emotional responses to life’s events and produces the fight, flight and freeze response
when it thinks our lives are threatened by danger.
Did you know that the brain cannot tell the difference between what’s real and
what’s imagined?
When primitive man found himself in life threatening situations, the fight-flight-freeze response
would be triggered. Non essential functions of the body would shut down and energy would be
redirected to the body parts required to remove him from life threatening situations. Today, we
rarely find ourselves in life threatening situations, but the subconscious part of the brain cannot tell
the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined and so if you negatively forecast it
continues to react in the way it has been programmed to do.
Using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we achieve excellent results. We draw a line in the sand
and forget how you have been. We focus on your preferred future and how you want things to
be! During an initial consultation, I will explain what is happening in the brain when we suffer from
anxiety related disorders and how we can start to get you back in control.
From the
archives
From the archives -
The Reverend William Hay,
Vicar of Rochdale
In 1761 William Robert Hay was born into a wealthy family in Cintra Portugal, his father being Envoy
Extraordinary to the Court of Portugal 1759and his mother the daughter of the Earl of Oxford. Hay was
educated at Westminster School after which he attended Christ Church Oxford between 1780 and 1783.
Called to the bar to practice law in 1788, he married the daughter of a Manchester surgeon, Mary Wagstaffe
in 1793. Turning to holy orders Hay was ordained as Deacon (1797) and the Priest (1798) to Chester and
took on a small curacy in Hollinwood near Oldham.
Crucially in 1802 he was elected Chair to the Salford
Quarter Sessions and Commissioner of the Peace in
Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire and
became Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire. During this time
Hay distinguished himself by his firmness as a magistrate
during the Luddite riots of 1812 and 1813 although it
was felt that he was far too eager to suppress the
protesters. In a letter to Hay from W Ogden in a
Manchester newspaper in 1819 it was claimed that ‘as
a magistrate you have taken an active part in
committing to prison a large number of not only
innocent, but worthy young men. Where is your
judgement?
National fame and notoriety for William Hay was yet
to come. As possibly the most active and influential
magistrate in the country, in 1819 Hay was called
to Manchester on the 18th August to oversee what
was expected to be a seditious gathering seeking
reform of parliamentary representation. An earlier
circular from the Home Office recommended
vigilance of local magistrates and the training of
militia prior to the assembly of the protesters,
60
6000 of whom marched 6-abreast with bands and colours
flying into the centre of Manchester, making up an
assembly some felt to be20000, others between
60000 and 80000 strong at what became
known as Peterloo.
William Hay and the other magistrates
felt that, even though the crowd
appeared peaceful there was a danger
to public safety and proclaimed the
meeting illegal. As Chairman of the
Quarter Sessions and responsible for the
reading of the Riot Act, Hay did so and
although an hour should legally elapse before
dispersing a crowd, an immediate attempt was
made to clear the way and arrest those making speeches.
This was done first by the Manchester Yeomanry advancing at a
walk but then on the orders of the Magistrates the Hussars deployed at a trot,
and on a trumpet blast, a charge. There was panic and a stampede in which 700 were badly injured and 18 killed. Archbishop
Alison felt that the conduct of the magistrates wasill-judged and their measures inexpedient although others such as Canon Parkinson
in the Manchester Courier (14/12/1839) felt that Manchester owed a vote of thanks ‘to Mr Hay’s firmness and coolness.’
One month after the Peterloo massacre, William Hay was nominated for a living as Vicar of Rochdale, one of the most lucrative in
the country at that time, being worth £1838 per year! Many reformers were annoyed at Hay’s promotion and efforts were made to
challenge it. Hay never seems to have been known much in Rochdale as a clergyman but more as a lawyer and politician. He was
often indiscrete however, and on one occasion gave enormous offence when drinking at a public dinner at the Wellington Hotel by
toasting ‘the health of my good friends, Hunt and Co’ who were the speakers arrested speakers at Peterloo. Clement Royds, who was
later to be High Sheriff of the county, never forgot the indecency of that remark.
Reputed to have been a man of 18 stones it was said that it took 14 yards of Saddleworth cloth to make a suit of clothes for him.
He was not generally seen in and around Rochdale and in fact didn’t like the town. If Samuel Bamford’s poem ‘The Pernicious
Parson’ is anything to go by, the feeling was mutual!
If you have any comments on Peterloo or William Hay, I’d be delighted to hear from you and add them to a growing
Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave
your comments at 07745201263.
ASHWORTH REVISITED
WALK THE FRIENDS OF ASHWORTH
VALLEY HERITAGE TRAIL (APPROX. 3 MILES)
This wonderful walk allows you to explore our valleys and ancient woodland.
You will see Ashworth's industrial heritage when you visit mill ruins where time has stood still and flora and
fauna have now taken over, as well as taking you through Ashworth Fold Conservation Area with its Grade 2
Listed buildings. Wear appropriate footwear as it can be muddy in places and there is a river to cross. Parking is available
outside the Parish Hall on School Lane. Please do not obstruct the garages. You can pick up the start of the walk just along School
Lane, turning left just before the bridge onto the footpath/bridleway. This takes you to Coal Bank Mill.
1. Day School.
On School Lane, you will find the old stone School House with its
attractive leaded windows. Built in 1838 by Wilbraham Egerton for
local children. Now used as St James's Parish Hall.
2. Coal Bank Mill ruins.
Built in 1816, originally a woolen carding mill and by 1879 it was
bleaching cotton. Opposite were 2 rows of cottages and a mill office
and shop. It was destroyed by a fire on 24th March 1916.
Back track a little and turn up to Paperhouse Farm, bearing left over
the cattle grid and walk up the tarmac drive, bearing right over the next cattle grid towards the Church.
3. St. James Church.
Was known to be in existence in 1514. Built by the Holt's for their tenants in the reign of Henry V111. It was rebuilt in 1789. The Church is
said to be haunted.
4. Egerton Arms ('t' Chapel House) - next to the Church.
Thought to have been built in the early 16th Century as a place of refreshment by the isolated Church. It was given the name Egerton after
being rebuilt in 1767 by the Egerton family and closed its doors in 1993. It is now a private residence.
Turn right onto Ashworth Road and take first left through gate marked private. This is a public right of way and bridlepath. Go past Dairy House
and Black Dad Farm, dropping down to the Valley below. Cross over the stream to the left and follow down to Kershaws Bridge.
5. Kershaw Bridge.
Over the bridge up to the right are the remains of Allansons Mill. Built in 1780 by Thomas Allanson, this was the first mill on record in the
Valley and the first to cease production in the early 1850’s.
Climb the cobbled stone setts up to Nab’s Wife.
62
For more information to join or support our Friends group, please contact Martin on 07500241735 or
follow The Friends of Ashworth Valley on Facebook.
6. Nab’s Wife (or Nab’s Wharfe).
This is formerly the site of a popular tearoom which provided
refreshments for generations of walkers and hikers during the summer
months and is now a private residence.
Turn left and over the stile facing you. Follow the path. After a while
you will start to drop down into the Valley, cross the river, taking care
and follow to a fork in footpath. Take the left fork and climb to the
fields at the top. Continue across the field and then along the lane
towards Ashworth Fold. Turn left when reaching Ashworth Road.
7. Ashworth Fold.
A Fold here dates back to the early 1600's. This Conservation Area with its group of Grade 2 Listed
Buildings, mainly built in the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries, with features such as the Hall, studded Gothic
doorway, attractive parapet and finial, a stone stile, a
cobbled area, Listed pig sties and the stone gable end of
Ashworth Hall dating back to 15th Century.
Turn right along the marked footpath, down the side of
Ashworth Hall and into Carr Wood. Follow path past
former tearooms.
8. Lower Clough. (formerly Carr Wood tearooms)
Once another popular tearoom and venue for Sunday
school outings. There used to be a corn mill at Lower
Clough but nothing remains apart from 2 granite
millstones which can still be seen. A date of 1766 and
initials I.S. were found by the old mill dam.
Climb up the lane to Higher Clough. Fulling Mill through
the trees on the right.
9. Ashworth Fulling Mill.
Built in 1866, mill ruins can still be clearly seen. These
can be accessed by a footpath just over the bridge on
School Lane. The remains of the driveshaft and
waterwheel are still in evidence.
Walk back along School Lane to the start.
War Office Road
By Susan Smith,
for Bamford Green Belt Action Group.
Have you ever wondered why War Office Road has such a strange name? There are two possible
historic explanations as to where this name came from, and both of them centre on the pub
which used to be where The Sir Winston Churchill/Harvester now stands, which was called The
Golden Fleece. The first explanation is that ‘The ‘Fleece’ was once used by Oliver Cromwell to
pay off his men after local skirmishes during the Civil War. Was this when The Fleece first
began to be nicknamed ‘The War Office?’
The second explanation, though, is far more interesting!
Picture the scene. It is the early decades of the 1800’s, and the Industrial Revolution has yet to take hold in this area.
Bamford as we know it today doesn’t exist. Instead, the whole area, from Birtle to Oulder Hill, and from Norden,
(which also doesn’t yet exist) right down to the banks of the Roch, is called Birtle-cum-Bamford, and isn’t even part
of Rochdale, but a distant and sleepy outpost of the Parish of Middleton!
There is no village, justfields, remote farms and tiny hamlets, Broadhalgh, Meadowcroft,Crimble, Hollins, Springbank,
Shelfield, Bagslate,Ashworth, to name but a few, each with a few huddled cottages and residents. There are no roads,
except for Ashworth Road, and everywhere else is connected by footpaths and cart tracks, meandering hither and yon,
which mostly don’t go anywhere. The population is sparse, isolated and mostly self sufficient, supplementing their
income any way they can and many are handloom weavers, spinning and weaving wool in their cottages, and selling
their finished ‘piece’ on to a middleman, who takes it on to the towns by packhorse. Nothing has changed for
centuries
During this period, England was at War with France, on and off, for about 25 years, the Napoleonic Wars, and these
wars dictated the price the handloom weavers could get for their pieces of woven cloth. If the wars were going badly
for England, or there was to be a major new offensive, the price of cloth rose, due to increased demand, because more
soldiers were recruited, and more uniforms were needed. If it was going well and we were winning, the price fell.
Naturally, the weavers were very interested to find out how the wars were going, but the only way they could do this
was by reading a ‘news sheet’, which were very expensive at that time, and there was also the small problem that
none of them could read.
So they had the bright idea of clubbing together and buying one news sheet between them, and getting the curate to
read it out to them in Church on Sundays, which everybody attended .This idea was vetoed, however, the church not
being considered a suitable place for news of war and commerce. They solved the problem by clubbing together to
buy the news sheets, and persuaded the curate to read the war news to them in one of the cottages, or more likely the
pub, The Golden Fleece, at the hamlet of Kenyon Fold, which soon became known as “t’war office”, and the track
leading down to it at the convergence of most of the footpaths, ‘t war office road.’
Right up to the arrival of the developers to begin building ‘modern ‘Bamford in the 1960’s, the area around Kenyon
Fold was always referred to by Bamford old-timers as ‘t’war office.’ The Golden Fleece was demolished in the mid
1960’s, and The Sir Winston Churchill built in its place, the name chosen (narrowly), instead of The Golden Fleece by
local referendum, Churchill having died in 1965.
So the next time you’re out for a Sunday stroll on the footpaths across our precious green belt, remember those
cottagers who’s feet probably made the footpaths in the first place, as they made their way to the road leading to the
Golden Fleece, which to this day , over 200 years later, is stillWar Office Road.
when Wordsworth Way estate, (bottom right) was first under
construction. Jowkin Lane is in top left hand corner, and a
good part of the Green Belt, before the Cricket, Tennis or
Football Clubs were constructed, is visible in the top half of
Norden Carnival 40th Anniversary –
17th June 2017
Make sure if you’re not already planning to be part of the annual parade and carnival through the village
that you’ll be ready to line the streets to cheer this year’s carnival parade. Leading the way will be Carnival
Queen, Eva Jackson and Carnival King, Alfie Radcliffe. They will be joined by hundreds of others from the
local schools and businesses that are coming to join in the fun.
What’s the theme this year?
To mark the 40th Anniversary, we’re asking everyone to choose their favourite theme from the last 40 years. When the Carnival
started in 1977 to mark the Queens Silver Jubilee, local businesses came together to show off their goods. 40 years on, as the
Carnival has gone from strength to strength past themes, chosen by you, have included:
TV; All Creatures Great and Small; Favourite Film; Favourite Book; Music through the Decades; Around the World in 80 Days;
Popstars; A Night at the Oscars; Best of British; Fairytales; Top of the Pops; Circus; Myths, witches and wizards.
With so much diversity there’s lots of choice – and no excuse to get involved!
How to Enter the Parade?
The deadline for entering a float or walking
group is Saturday 10th June. There’s no
charge to enter. All charities and community
groups that join the Parade will be given a
small donation – the amount varies
depending on how much is raised on the
day.
Want to be next Year’s Carnival
King or Queen?
The King and Queen are
automatically selected from those
who are awarded the Best
Dressed Boy and Girl at the
Carnival. So, if there weren’t
already enough reasons to
get involved, start planning those outfits now so you, your son,
daughter could be like Alfie and Eva next year.
Congratulations to this year’s Poster Winners!
Harriet Howarth from Norden Primary School and Zak Hussain from Whittaker Moss. The Committee also
‘Highly Commended’ Addil Islam and Raeesah Islam, both from Norden Primary School for their entries. The quality was great
again and thanks to all the pupils, parents, teachers and support staff who help make the Carnival so successful. A massive
thanks, too, to Roma Publications for another incredible design for the cover of Streetwise.
A Village Of
Unsung Heroes
In the hurly-burly of everyday life, it is sometimes very easy to forget the unique and individual
character of Norden and it’s surroundings. It is equally easy to forget the individuals and groups who
help to create and sustain the atmosphere and ambience of our Village. Here are some examples to remind
and inspire you.
The residents of Ashworth Valley have recently grouped together to bring greater collective vigour to their efforts to clean up and
enhance the whole of Ashworth Road for the benefit of all user- groups; ramblers, cyclists, horse-riders and tourists can all see
the impact they are having.
There are two families in particular who have made it their mission to spend valuable spare time at weekends on an intensive
clean-up of the upper part of Edenfield Road and Ashworth Road; their efforts are a brilliant example of how much transformation
can be achieved by persistent hard work.
A number of local shopkeepers and other business owners are improving and enhancing their shop-fronts and buildings to
improve the visitor experience. Our community is extremely fortunate that a local business has provided much-needed car parking
space close to the centre of Norden, making life more convenient and safer for everyone.
Some residents in the terraced streets on either side of Edenfield Road have clearly engaged with the spirit of RHS Britain in
Bloom adding colour to their hoses with creative pot-planting and hanging baskets.
The Friends Of Heritage Green have given a great demonstration of community campaigning in their efforts to prevent building on
a key green space for local residents.
Moss Row Community Allotment Society have not only rescued a derelict space in the midst of our Village, but have also created a
much-improved environment and wildlife habitat for us all to enjoy.
The initiative started by Councillor Winkler and others to list and preserve key heritage assets in our Ward is a longer term project
to enhance our environment for present and future generations.
The whole environment in our Village benefits from the advocacy skills of all three Councillors as well as their vigilance in insuring
that, as far as possible, development in the Ward is kept appropriate in the scale and character and that Green Belt is preserved
and enhanced.
I hope that people reading the above will be inspired to initiate their own project or support an existing one. For further
information on any of the items above, please contact either Kate or Becky at Streetwise.
Seared Beef Fillet with Mizuna and Bacon Bits
You don’t need a lot of beef to make this designer salad so source
out the best quality you can. Quite uniquely the beef is only seared
on one side – resulting in a steak that is charred on the bottom,
medium on the middle and rare on top. Beautiful. If you do want a
more substantial salad just increase the quantity of meat.
Serves 2
Croutons
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 slice of white bread- placed in the freezer for 5 minutes so easier to slice
1 clove garlic – crushed
3 slices streaky bacon cooked until crisp and cut into splinters
Potato
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small potato – peeled and finely diced
1 sprig fresh rosemary – chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 knob butter
2 x 85g slices of beef fillet
To Serve
Mizuna salad
Mixed leaves
Simple vinaigrette
1) Take the chilled piece of bread and cut into neat dice.
Heat the olive oil and fry the bread, tossing frequently until
a light golden. Add the garlic and toss a few more times.
2) For the potato – heat the olive oil in a non stick pan and
fry the potato cubes, keep tossing until the potato is cooked
through and golden on the outside, add the rosemary and
toss a few more times – season.
3) When ready to serve, heat the remaining oil in a pan,
add the knob of butter, when foaming, add the steak and
fry on a high heat until the blood starts to form on the top
of the steak.
4) Arrange the salad leaves on a plate, scatter on the
croutons, potato and bacon. Place the steak on top and
finish with a drizzle of vinaigrette.
N.E.E.V.A.
(Norden Environmental and Economic Village Association)
N.E.E.V.A. has been at the heart of the Norden community for approximately
20 years. The association is run by a team of volunteers, who dedicate their
time to organise and participate in much loved annual events that bring
families and friends together whilst having fun and raising money for charity.
Looking ahead for the month of June, we are preparing for the much-anticipated
Norden Carnival. The village’s local businesses will be hard at work brainstorming how
to decorate their shop windows for the event on Saturday, June 17th 2017 to celebrate
40 years of what has become a much-loved tradition.
Continued work towards raising funds to decorate our village with beautiful hanging
baskets, improving roads and providing security
through CCTV cameras are well underway. As
we are approaching the middle of the year our
efforts will start to focus on the Christmas Light
Switch-On organised by NE.E.V.A.
For now we would like to invite everyone in our
special community to join in the festivities on Carnival Day. See you there!
Local Business Man Receives Recognition from Mayor
and Mayoress of Rochdale
After Paul Ellison received a personal invitation from the Mayor and Mayoress of
Rochdale to attend afternoon tea at the Town hall on Wednesday 10th May, Paul was
privileged and honoured to receive a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of the
hard work and dedication Paul has shown in Norden, in particular his time spent
cleaning and tidying, fundraising and setting
up groups and events to improve the local
area.
Paul started at the age of 8 years, and received his
first recognition at the age of 12, where the current
countryside ranger at the time, Stuart Brown,
awarded him a Certificate of Commendation for
various projects in the countryside. Stuart Brown who
attended the Town Hall presentation said, "It’s so wonderful to see how Paul has carried on his
dedication and enthusiasm in the area of Norden, and wish him greater success in the future".
Mr Ellison is very active in the local community, by Chairing local groups such as The Friends of
Norden Jubilee Park, NEEVA (Nordens Environmental and Economic Village Association) and he
helped to set up and chaired the Friends of Ashworth Valley.
Paul said, "I am very grateful to receive this awards and I will continue my hard work in Norden,
to help improve the area".
Churches Together in North West Rochdale
– Pentecost Prayer
As part of the celebration of Pentecost this year the ten churches of Churches Together in North West
Rochdale will be having a prayer walk between the churches. This will run from Tuesday 30th May to Friday
2nd June. The route that will be taken and the timings are listed above. All are invited to join with the walking between the
churches or simply join us at one of the churches that will be open for refreshments and when the walkers arrive there will be a
short time of prayer. This will give us the opportunity to pray for the communities as we walk as well as having a focused time of
prayer at each church that is open. We will not necessarily enter each church but we will pray for each church and the community
in which each is set.
We will start on Tuesday 30th May at 7pm setting off from St Paul’s Church, Norden
We will walk to Norden Methodist Church where there will be refreshments and a time of prayer for the community. As part of this
we will hear a little about the mission and work of both St Paul’s Church and Norden Methodist Church. The prayer walkers hope
to arrive at Norden Methodist Church for prayer by 7.30pm.
On Wednesday 31st May at 11am we will set off from Norden Methodist Church
Walking to St Vincent’s which will be open for us to hear a little about the Church
We will then walk on to Cutgate Baptist Church which will be open for refreshments and a time of prayer.
As the day before we can walk and be praying for the community in which each of these churches are situated.
On Thursday 1st June at 7pm we will set off from Cutgate Baptist Church
Walking to Spotland Methodist Church where we will stop outside for a short time of prayer after hearing about the work going on
at Spotland Methodist Church. From there we will walk on to St Clement’s Church of England Church which will be open for
refreshments and a time of prayer.
On Friday 2nd June at 11am we will set off from St George’s Church of England Church
walking to Bamford Chapel and Norden United Reformed Church where we will pray outside for the work of the church and the
community. From there we will then walk on to St Michael’s Church of England Church where we will go in and have a time of
prayer. At this final stop we will also hear about the work and mission of St James’ Church.
On Sunday evening the 4th June we are invited to join with our friends at St Clement’s Church of England Church at 6.30pm for a
reflective time of prayer where there will be different stations for prayer. All welcome!
Ingredients
600g skinless, boneless chicken thigh or breast meat
1 large onion
2.5cm piece root ginger, peeled and coarsely chopped
3 cloves garlic, peeled
2 red peppers, peeled and deseeded
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons ground coriander
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper or chilli
½ teaspoon ground pepper
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ tablespoons ground almonds
125ml water or chicken stock
Juice of 1 lemon
7 tablespoons vegetable oil ( can use less oil)
CHICKEN IN RED PEPPER SAUCE
Recipe from Heather Williams
Serves 3-4 good portions. This dish is a mild curry using chicken thigh or chicken breast
meat courtesy of Paul Bellchambers of Denman College(the WI’s own Cookery School)
Method -
Combine onion, ginger, garlic, peppers, salt, pepper and spices in a food processor
or blender and process until everything is finely chopped into a paste.
Heat a pan over a medium heat and heat oil. When hot, pour in the mixture from
the blender and stir fry for about 10 minutes until you can see the oil forming tiny
bubbles round it.
Add the chicken with the water or stock and lemon juice. Stir to mix, bring to the
boil and cover. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for about 25 minutes or
until the chicken is tender.
Serve with plain rice and naan bread.
Tip
When preparing rice use basmati rice and gently fry, without browning, in 1
tablespoon oil before adding water to boil until tender. Drain off excess water before
serving and fluff up with a fork.
