Welcome to our bumper June issue – how the months fly by as we are
already halfway through the Streetwise year!
Congratulations to Lewis and his team at Craven and Murray Opticians in
Norden who reflect back on ten successful years (see page 26). You are
always guaranteed a very warm welcome from Lewis, Jo, Sarah and Ian
and during the month of June, they are swapping a cup of coffee for a glass
of fizz to mark the occasion so definitely worth popping in at some point!
On page 29 you can read about Littleborough resident Samantha Smith
who aged 30 who is battling a life threatening condition which means that
her spine is being crushed by the weight of her skull. An event to raise
vital funds for a complex operation in the US is being held on Saturday
24th June at 2pm, venue is the Wine Press at Hollingworth Lake. To
purchase tickets or for more info contact Tracy on 07903 397445.
This month ‘From the Archives’ features yet another fascinating article about
the Reverend William Hay who as Vicar of Rochdale received one of the
most lucrative salaries in the country at the time - £1838 per year!
Check out the new Sunflower Appeal just launched by Springhill Hospice
on page 34 – Springhill Sunflowers are all-weather plaques with a space
for a brief dedication. They cost £5.50 each which includes postage and
are also available to purchase online. Display your Sunflower in your home,
garden or another special place as a permanent tribute to the special person
in your life.
Until next month…..
As the sole owner of Valley Acupuncture, Louise has enjoyed seven
successful years in business and has recently refurbished her clinic.
The natural approach of acupuncture means patients are often
keen to try a drug free option to improve their health. Over the
years, Louise has treated patients with general health problems,
pain, injury and conditions experienced in pregnancy. There also
continues to be a growing interest in patients seeking support
during natural fertility and assisted reproductive technology, with
some fertility clinics actually recommending acupuncture to their
patients. During the spring and summer months, treatment can
be also helpful with conditions such as hay fever. As a member
of the British Acupuncture Council, Louise is recognised by some
private health insurers, so it`s worth checking your policy to see
if you are covered. If you require professional advice about how
traditional acupuncture may help you, or wish to book an
appointment please call 01706 759896 or 07903 851856 or
The Reverend William Hay,
Vicar of Rochdale
In 1761 William Robert Hay was born into a wealthy family in Cintra portugal, his father being Envoy
Extraordinary to the Court of portugal 1759and his mother the daughter of the Earl of Oxford. Hay was
educated at Westminster School after which he attended Christ Church Oxford between 1780 and 1783.
Called to the bar to practice law in 1788, he married the daughter of a manchester surgeon, mary Wagstaffe
in 1793. Turning to holy orders Hay was ordained as Deacon (1797) and the priest (1798) to Chester and
took on a small curacy in Hollinwood near Oldham.
Crucially in 1802 he was elected Chair to the Salford
Quarter Sessions and Commissioner of the Peace in
Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire and
became Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire. During this time
Hay distinguished himself by his firmness as a magistrate
during the Luddite riots of 1812 and 1813 although it
was felt that he was far too eager to suppress the
protesters. In a letter to Hay from W Ogden in a
Manchester newspaper in 1819 it was claimed that ‘as
a magistrate you have taken an active part in
committing to prison a large number of not only
innocent, but worthy young men. Where is your
judgement?
National fame and notoriety for William Hay was yet
to come. As possibly the most active and influential
magistrate in the country, in 1819 Hay was called
to Manchester on the 18th August to oversee what
was expected to be a seditious gathering seeking
reform of parliamentary representation. An earlier
circular from the Home Office recommended
vigilance of local magistrates and the training of
militia prior to the assembly of the protesters,
32

6000 of whom marched 6-abreast with bands and colours
flying into the centre of Manchester, making up an
assembly some felt to be20000, others between
60000 and 80000 strong at what became
known as Peterloo.
William Hay and the other magistrates
felt that, even though the crowd
appeared peaceful there was a danger
to public safety and proclaimed the
meeting illegal. As Chairman of the
Quarter Sessions and responsible for the
reading of the Riot Act, Hay did so and
although an hour should legally elapse before
dispersing a crowd, an immediate attempt was
made to clear the way and arrest those making speeches.
This was done first by the Manchester Yeomanry advancing at a
walk but then on the orders of the Magistrates the Hussars deployed at a trot,
and on a trumpet blast, a charge. There was panic and a stampede in which 700 were badly injured and 18 killed. Archbishop
Alison felt that the conduct of the magistrates wasill-judged and their measures inexpedient although others such as Canon Parkinson
in the Manchester Courier (14/12/1839) felt that Manchester owed a vote of thanks ‘to Mr Hay’s firmness and coolness.’
One month after the Peterloo massacre, William Hay was nominated for a living as Vicar of Rochdale, one of the most lucrative in
the country at that time, being worth £1838 per year! Many reformers were annoyed at Hay’s promotion and efforts were made to
challenge it. Hay never seems to have been known much in Rochdale as a clergyman but more as a lawyer and politician. He was
often indiscrete however, and on one occasion gave enormous offence when drinking at a public dinner at the Wellington Hotel by
toasting ‘the health of my good friends, Hunt and Co’ who were the speakers arrested speakers at Peterloo. Clement Royds, who was
later to be High Sheriff of the county, never forgot the indecency of that remark.
Reputed to have been a man of 18 stones it was said that it took 14 yards of Saddleworth cloth to make a suit of clothes for him.
He was not generally seen in and around Rochdale and in fact didn’t like the town. If Samuel Bamford’s poem ‘The Pernicious
Parson’ is anything to go by, the feeling was mutual!
If you have any comments on peterloo or William Hay, I’d be delighted to hear from you and add them to a growing
Rochdale archive on the subject. please contact gary Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave
your comments at 07745201263.
The award winning gardens surrounding Springhill Hospice are just beginning to flower, summer will
soon be here, encouraging the gardens to bloom. What could be a more appropriate time to launch the
Hospice’s new Sunflower appeal?
“We are so proud of the beautiful grounds and the pleasure they bring. The
sight of patients enjoying the sunshine, flowers, hedgerows and wildlife has
inspired a new campaign, which we are inviting the whole community to join,
said the Hospice’s Chief Executive, Julie Halliwell.
“This summer sees the launch of our new Sunflower Appeal. The sunflower is
vibrant, strong and beautiful, symbolic of life, love and faith, as well as
representing the Hospice movement as a whole. What better symbol for a
new fundraising appeal, to shine a light on special memories of happy times
past and present, helping to keep them strong?
“It is a celebration of memories both old and new and for those we create
every day” added Julie.
their annual Open Garden Day on August 6th. Anyone choosing to place their
plaque in the Hospice grounds will receive free entry to the Open Garden day
simply by bringing along their sunflower.
Mrs Halliwell went on to explain “We’d love to see the vegetable and herb
beds full of elegant sunflowers for everyone to see. The plaques will stay in
place for the month of August, after which they can be taken home for you to
keep forever” adding “the money raised from the Sunflower Appeal will allow
us to create lasting memories for more families”.
“Some very special memories were born even when creating this campaign”
Springhill Sunflowers are lovely, all-weather plaques approximately 22 cm
high and include a space for your own brief dedication. Each Sunflower
plaque is £5.50 which includes postage and are available to buy online at
www.springhill.org.uk/sunflower-appeal.
You can choose to display your Sunflower in your home, garden or another
special place. Wherever you decide, your sunflower will remain a warm focus
over the summer for that special memory or person in your life.
In addition, Springhill are also offering the opportunity to place the plaque
amongst the flowers, vegetables or herb garden in the Hospice grounds during
explained Fundraising Manager, Lillie Winterbottom.
“We took our plaques to Lower Place Primary School so see what the children
there thought of our special, lasting memory, sunflowers. It was a beautiful
sunny day and one I’ll never forget. The children greeted us with the most
wonderful beaming smiles, they loved the sunflowers, talking, laughing and
giggling together in the sunshine. I was reminded of my own children when
they were younger, all rosy cheeked and giddy. I‘ve bought my very own
sunflowers, some for my garden at home and some to be placed at the
Hospice. Every time I look at them they’ll remind me firstly of my children
and then of a wonderful afternoon, out and about in the community, meeting
the Hospice’s youngest supporters. Simply wonderful”.
Join Springhill in their Sunflower Appeal, do something amazing for you, your
family and your community.
Sunflowers are available online by visiting
