Pilots <strong>of</strong> a Special Attack Unit drink a glass <strong>of</strong><br />

saké before commencing their attacks during the<br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> Leyte Gulf. Considered to be one <strong>of</strong><br />

the largest naval clashes in history, the battle<br />

effectively ended the Japanese occupation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Philippines. Kamikaze attacks were<br />

launched during the final stages and<br />

succeeded in destroying the US<br />

carrier St. Lo in October.<br />
