Pilots of a Special Attack Unit drink a glass of
saké before commencing their attacks during the
Battle of Leyte Gulf. Considered to be one of
the largest naval clashes in history, the battle
effectively ended the Japanese occupation
of the Philippines. Kamikaze attacks were
launched during the final stages and
succeeded in destroying the US
carrier St. Lo in October.
