AFFINITY FOR OUR INDUSTRY WHAT IS MOST CONCERNING IS THAT AFTER MANY MONTHS OF SUPPOSEDLY “LISTENING TO QUEENSLANDERS”, THERE IS NO SIGN OF ANY AFFINITY WITH OUR INDUSTRY. As this edition of the QHA Review goes to print, our industry is being faced with a curious decision that threatens businesses, employment and Queensland’s reputation. ID scanning of patrons as they enter approximately 240 venues across Queensland is scheduled to start on the 1st of July, 2017. In so many ways, this decision shows a complete disconnect of our elected politicians with the hospitality industry. The QHA is approached daily by members and non-members who are distraught with how they are expected to find thousands of dollars extra a year in their marketplace for a system that has no certainty of being ready or working. What is most concerning is that after many months of supposedly “listening to Queenslanders”, there is no sign of any affinity with our industry. There appears to be a stout belief that scanning the IDs of thousands of patrons will cure many of society’s ills – despite there being little evidence that these ills are actually occurring on licensed premises. The QHA accept that we bear some responsibility in ensuring Governments of all persuasions understand the key role our members businesses play in delivering the employment that every politicians claims to create, particularly in regional Queensland. This was a key feature in our recent State of the Industry event highlighting that QHA cannot afford to stand by as elected parliamentarians blindly devalue businesses with little consideration to the consequences on the hard-working entrepreneurs across the state. Whether it is reducing the hours your business can operate, increasing your staff costs or imposing additional costs in ID scanning, we urge every member to contact their local member and ask how these decisions are supposed to keep doors open. Importantly, we all must urge the Government to delay this implementation to get it right – not the rushed, impractical solution we are now faced with.
