<strong>№40</strong>, July 2017 Youth Day in Ukraine 2017 A fun and carefree holiday, Youth Day 2017, was traditionally celebrated in Ukraine on the last Sunday of June. During the weekend of June 24-25 Ukrainians held many bright and interesting events, including concerts, festivals, contests and even a sports night marathon for the most active young residents of Kyiv. In Ukraine, the Youth Day is set as a holiday by the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 323/94 from June 22, 1994, by the Decree of the President from June 27, 2008, No. 599 «On the Day of Youth and Children’s Public Organizations» and the Decree No. 600/2011 «On Amendments to the Decree of the President of Ukraine from June 27, 2008 No. 599». It is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of June and is known as the Youth Day. A lot of people believe that youth is one of the brightest and happiest periods in life. In comparison with other holidays, this day almost doesn’t have traditions. To celebrate it, people hold various festivals, concerts, exhibitions and entertainment events. Sports competitions are especially popular, because sport is an important part of life. Usually, at the end of the celebration, people make a grand salute and organize concerts with the participation of talented performers, invite dance ensembles and representatives of dance schools. Recently, fireworks shows have gained popularity: it is a vibrant entertainment that consists of acrobatic numbers and fire manipulations. A lot of youths prefers to continue the celebration in cafes, pubs, restaurants or clubs. It is common to celebrate Youth Day with flash mobs, in which everyone can take part, and it is considered an extraordinary experience. Being young is not only a wonderful period, but also a special state of mind. Therefore, Youth Day is considered a holiday of creativity, energy and the implementation of the most daring plans. As modern students and future young workers will one day determine the ways of our country’s development, the state is taking measures to encourage them to study and work. After all, caring for young people is an important part of social work. It is difficult to disagree with the fact that they are our state’s future, and what our life will look like in future depends only on them, as well as like its image on the world arena. Congratulations from the President on the occasion of Youth Day Dear friends! I am happy to congratulate you on Youth Day. There is no better period in our life than youth. This is the time of personal formation, planning of the future, educating yourself, making new discoveries and the first professional accomplishments. Today is the time of great hopes and expectations. Recently Ukrainians have got visa-free regime with the countries of the European Union, thus destroying the wall, which separated Ukraine from Europe. I am convinced that without your decisive and uncompromising struggle for the European choice, this day would never have happened. Young boys and girls, with their bright thoughts, great patriotism, energy and goodness in their hearts, heroically fight with evil and injustice. I am proud that our young people have always been at the forefront of historical changes and the struggle for Ukraine’s independence – from the Heroes of the Battle of Kruty, from the first students’ tents of the Revolution on the Granite, from the Orange Revolution to the EuroMaidan, the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and the “cyborgs”. Today, the best Ukrainians - the soldiers of the Armed Forces and other military formations – are defending our freedom in the East of the country. I believe that Ukraine will never leave the path to democracy, because the new generation is a generation of free people. I sincerely wish you success, inexhaustible creativity and energy. <strong>№40</strong>, July 2017 The Ukrainian flag brought together children from 22 countries Kyiv held the International Art Competition «My Flag is Where I Am». It brought together 86 children from the Ukrainian diaspora from 22 countries starting from the USA to Australia. Under the terms of the contest, the children depicted the most famous landscapes of the countries they live in but the main hero of each «story» was the Ukrainian yellow-and-blue flag. 120 drawings decorated the Gallery of the Presidential Administration Second Floor Art Center. 16 works were selected to participate in the exhibition - 16 stories of children, families of which for various reasons left Ukraine but kept it in the heart. Even far away from the motherland these people remain Ukrainians and bring up their children in the same way. The participants of the exhibition were: Andrii Nosiar (Germany), Pericles Agriopoulos (Greece), Maria Liash (Ireland), Roman Vitsiak (Portugal), Diana Tymchuk (Italy), Bohdan Lubiv (Spain), Karina Malovshek (Slovenia), Bohdana Studenkova (Slovakia), Valeria Christensen (Denmark), Dania Trochinska Rute (Estonia), Valeria Istomina and Iryna Istomina (Switzerland), Yana Kysyliova (China), Stefania Mandzii and Sofia Mandzii (Australia), Maria Marchuk (the USA) and Hryhorii Kuka (Russia). The winner of the contest was Melissa Dovhyi from Brazil, a Ukrainian of descent. Her ancestors moved 100 years ago to Brazil in search of a better luck. She does not speak Ukrainian but takes pride in her roots. The person who organized and inspired the project, Maria Kovalevska, artist, designer, teacher, member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, says: «The exhibition «My Flag is Where I Am» is an important and unprecedented event for the newest Ukraine. The President opened the doors to the Administration for children, opened the door of «the authority» to those who will define the future of Ukraine. As a curator, I am extremely happy to be so lucky as to help the voices of Ukrainian children sound in the midst of the cruelty of the adult world, to make people listen and pay attention to what they think!» 15
