Kharkiv flower beds: located on water,
in a tube of paint and equipped with a 3D effect
This year Kharkiv has got unusual flower beds of
petunias, marigolds and other bright flowers in different
parts of the city. Representatives of the mayor’s office
say that more than a million plants have already been
planted, yet it is planned to make almost two more in
order to adorn the city this year.
One of the most unusual objects has appeared on
the Lopansky embankment, in the square «Strilka». Now
it is decorated with flower beds resembling huge lilies
and planted on water. According to the director of the
Department of communal services of the city council
Oleksii Bohach, it is possible to take care for these flowers
only by sailing closer on a boat. It is planned to supplement
the composition with elements of the national flag and
the city’s symbol. «In fact, it is not the first time we have
floating flower beds, but this time they are also moving
dynamically,» Bohach says.
A flower bed in the form of a palette and a tube of
paint has appeared on Poltavskyiv Shliakh Street near the
Southern Railway Station. On Novhorodska Street flower
beds are represented by isometric structures, which
stretched for 90 meters.
Oleksii Bohach mentions that it was quite hard
to create the latter ones because the slopes there are
not even - and so to plant 150 thousand flowers workers
had to install special metal systems. Employees of
«Kharkivzelenbud» are now working on a floral composition
on the Universytetska hill and a 100-meter inscription «We
love Kharkiv» on Derevianka Street. For the latter, they are
using 30,000 flowers, among which are iresine, petunias
and alternanthera. By design, the plants should generate
the 3D effect.
According to Bohach, it takes around one year from
the moment of the idea’s emergence to its realization.
«We choose the location and think about what to make
there, what would be interesting, relevant and beautiful.
We evaluate the events that are going to happen there,
the flowers’ lifetime, and still we need time to prepare,
cultivate, and then plant those flowers,» he says.
The official comments that such flower objects are
always made by local staff of Kharkivzelenbud. Almost
all the flowers are from local greenhouses. An exception
are frost-resistant flowers brought from Holland, which
managed to withstand the April snow and frost.
