e are roughly four months away
from the initiation of the Electronic
Loggings Devices (ELD) mandate,
which has been created to foster
a safer working environment for
drivers. The deadline for all motor carriers
and drivers to begin using ELDs is December
17, 2017, according to a mandate passed
down by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
(FMCSA). Are you ready for the
transition?
The discussion over the ELD mandate
dates back to 2012, when the United States
Congress first enacted the “Moving Ahead for
Progress in the 21st Century” bill – which is
more commonly referred to as MAP-21. Inside
that particular bill was a provision requiring
the FMCSA to develop a rule mandating
the use of electronic logging devices.
It wasn’t until December 2015, though,
that the FMCSA finally passed its official
mandate requiring fleets to transition over to
ELDs. Fleets currently have until December
2017 to implement certified ELDs to record
hours of service.
What is an ELD?
An electronic logging device, according
to the online resource ELDFacts.com, is a
device that is “used to electronically record a
driver’s Record of Duty Status (RODS), which
replaces the paper logbook some drivers
currently use to record their compliance with
