GUTZON BORGLUM - SCULPTOR OF AMERICAN

HISTORY

This was the third visit made to Mount

Rushmore that I have experienced over a

period of 30 years. Each visit has seen new

amenities had been added to the entrance.

This visit saw a huge difference in new

underground parking areas and a grand

entrance into the front of the historic site

of four U.S. presidents sculpted into Mount

Rushmore near Rapid City, South Dakota.

Considering the massive project was started

in the 1920’s and not completed until 1942,

this may be one of the largest and longest

time completion sculptures ever. It was

initially commissioned by the governor of

South Dakota who saw his state struggling

economically during the great dust bowl.

Agriculture, one of the primary industries

of the state, was greatly depleted from the

drought. He came up with the idea of

promoting tourism with unusual natural

formations such as the Badlands and the

Black Hills drawing curious tourists to the

state. He had heard of Borglum who had

been working on a statue of Robert E. Lee

which he was carving into Stone Mountain,

Georgia.

Borglum had already gained notoriety from

his carving of the head of Abraham Lincoln

which is displayed in the White House. He

had studied in Paris and worked under the

famous sculptor Auguste Rodin. When the

massive project began on Mount Rushmore

the idea was to complete busts of two presidents,

Washington and Lincoln, however,

the Louisiana Purchase by Jefferson and

the Panama Canal purchase under Theodore

Roosevelt exemplifying the Manifest

Destiny or the empire building ambitions

of the United States, encouraged the planners

to include these two presidents in the

sculpture.

Borglum was a controversial figure

throughout his life. He was married twice

with two children born of his second

marriage, a daughter, and son. His son,

Lincoln, also a sculptor, completed Mount

Rushmore after his father’s death in 1941.

Borglum was also involved in politics and

earned publicity in a dispute with President

Woodrow Wilson after being involved in

investigating malpractice in aircraft manufacturing

during World War I. Throughout

his life he was outspoken and frequently

argued with financiers and others involved

in supporting his projects. He did, however,

leave a legacy of historical monuments

representing a visual history of the emerging

United States to be seen throughout

posterity.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by jersey Shore

I usually post about my mental

health on Facebook, and bitch about

scumbag people here in Jersey’s

Journal. Today I’m going to switch it

around.

I am diagnosed with depression and

anxiety. It’s a battle as an entertainer,

especially. It’s actually very common

among entertainers. The irony of it

all.

Let’s give you a disease that draws

you in when your job is to be out

and proud.

When you have no desire for life,

boy is it tough. I’ve done it many,

many, many times! It’s part of the

job. I’m here to entertain you!!!

But, like most things in life it isn’t

easy. I’m so lucky for my wonderful

friends. I am very blessed in that

capacity.

I have a solid base of people supporting

me. I am very lucky in that

aspect. So I guess I should say Thank

you to all of my support system.

Thank you!

my article. Now just seems like the

best place to stop!

Peace, Love, and Support,

Jersey

Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ

Film Festival

Celebrates Ten Years; Opens with Armistead

Maupin Documentary.

Maupin to Attend Opening Night Screening;

Sign Copies of New Memoir

August 7, 2017, Palm Springs, CA - Cinema

Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film

Festival (Cinema Diverse), which is celebrating

its tenth anniversary this year, will

open with The Untold Tales of Armistead

Maupin - the new documentary about the

beloved writer of the Tales of the City novels,

which were set in San Francisco, beginning

in the mid-seventies and continuing

through 2010. Armistead Maupin is set to

attend the opening night event, where he

will participate in a Q&A, receive a lifetime

achievement award, and sign copies of

his upcoming memoir, Logical Family: A

Memoir, which will not otherwise be available

until October.

Cinema Diverse opens on Thursday, September

21st and continues through Sunday,

September 24th at the Camelot Theatres

in Palm Springs. The following weekend,

a special Best of Fest celebration will take

place at the Mary Pickford Theatres, with

screenings on Friday, September 29th and

Saturday, September 30th.

“We are excited about the number of

award-winning LGBTQ films that have

come out this year,” said Michael C. Green,

Cinema Diverse Festival Director and Executive

Director of the Palm Springs Cultural

Center. “These films are not just attracting

the notice of festivals like Sundance, Tribeca

and SXSW, they are also winning awards

at those festivals. It’s exciting to see the

genre continue to grow, and gain traction

among mainstream audiences.”

Cinema Diverse is one of several niche film

festivals owned and operated by The Palm

Springs Cultural Center, a local nonprofit

that was established in 2007 by local philanthropists

Ric and Rozene Supple to encourage

the development of the cultural arts in

the Coachella Valley with a specific focus in

the areas of film, fine art, live performance,

and community festivals.

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis

The circus in Washington continued this week

with fights, recriminations, leaks, terminations;

and all from within the White House. Our own

Bozo the Clown cannot, even with new Chief of

Staff, stop his use of Twitter. He attacked the Congress

of his own party and then left on ANOTHER

vacation. He is close to spending more time out on

holiday in his first six months than Mr. Obama did

in four years.

He did go to West Virginia for a rally where he

attacked – guess who? – Hillary. I swear he doesn’t

get that he is living in the White House. Oooops

– we found out in Sports Illustrated, of all places,

that he thinks the WH is a “dump”. I’ve been at

the WH and it is no dump. And certainly not

gaudy like all the Trump hotels and towers he litters

across the world. While there he also boasted

about the growth in the coal industry since he has

been Prez. Well, I have to give him credit – that

much is true.

He has lifted environmental safeguards that have

been in place for years, helped open a new mine

in Pennsylvania (not West Virginia) and began to

dirty the air again after strong attempts in both

states to begin to clean up their land and air.

Congress also left for a month vacation with no

new health care legislation, no tax reform, no

simplification of government. They only did two

things of importance and those were done in a

bipartisan manner. Sanctions on Russia and North

Korea and keeping the President from making

recess appointments while they were gone so he

couldn’t arrange to fire the Independent Counsel,

Robert Mueller.

families and more with the Trump world.

Once the holidays and vacations are over, legislators

will have just about 18 days, give or take,

to raise the debt ceiling to continue to fund the

government. Will see if the far right will attempt

a shut down like they did under the past Administration.

Today it was reported that the State Department is

shedding 1/3 of its diplomatic workforce. So much

for “making America Great Again”. And transcripts

of discussions with the Prime Minister of

Australia and President of Mexico show us what a

boob this man is. Claiming to be the “greatest man

in the world” and how these two world leaders are

trying to make him look bad.

One suggestion Mr. President – Man up and take

responsibility for your own actions!

Labor Day there will be a Resistance Rally at the

Cathedral City Town Square Park by the Civic

Center. It will be from 5:30pm – 7:00pm and feature

speakers from local and county government,

education, healthcare, environment and more.

There will even be kid’s activities so folks can bring

the family. Come join us as the valley says NO to

Donald Trump and his regressive policies!

Well, that’s it for this week. Keep moving forward

and RESISTING!

Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in

Cathedral City. Greg was the first openly gay

elected city council members In Riverside

County. He has served on the boards of the

National League of Cities and the League

of California Cities and as President of the

As the week ended we learned that Mr. Mueller has

convened at least two grand juries; one in Washington

and one in Virginia to take testimony, issue

subpoenas and possible indictments of friends, Southern CA Association of Governments.
