The Idyllwild Arts proudly presents the 24th annual Jazz <strong>in</strong> the P<strong>in</strong>es<br />
Festival this <strong>Aug</strong>ust 11th, 12th and 13th, featur<strong>in</strong>g over two dozen bands. Performers and<br />
fans of jazz, blues, and R&B have a breathtak<strong>in</strong>g mounta<strong>in</strong> campus <strong>to</strong> themselves after the<br />
departure of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program’s thousands of arts-lovers and before the<br />
first semester of the Foundation’s residential high school, Idyllwild Arts Academy.<br />
All proceeds from the festival benefit Idyllwild Arts. Our mission is chang<strong>in</strong>g lives through<br />
the transformative power of art. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit.<br />

GUTZON BORGLUM - SCULPTOR OF AMERICAN<br />
HISTORY<br />
<strong>This</strong> was the third visit made <strong>to</strong> Mount<br />
Rushmore that I have experienced over a<br />
period of 30 years. Each visit has seen new<br />
amenities had been added <strong>to</strong> the entrance.<br />
<strong>This</strong> visit saw a huge difference <strong>in</strong> new<br />
underground park<strong>in</strong>g areas and a grand<br />
entrance <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the front of the his<strong>to</strong>ric site<br />
of four U.S. presidents sculpted <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Mount<br />
Rushmore near Rapid City, South Dakota.<br />
Consider<strong>in</strong>g the massive project was started<br />
<strong>in</strong> the 1920’s and not completed until 1942,<br />
this may be one of the largest and longest<br />
time completion sculptures ever. It was<br />
<strong>in</strong>itially commissioned by the governor of<br />
South Dakota who saw his state struggl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
economically dur<strong>in</strong>g the great dust bowl.<br />
Agriculture, one of the primary <strong>in</strong>dustries<br />
of the state, was greatly depleted from the<br />
drought. He came up with the idea of<br />
promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>urism with unusual natural<br />
formations such as the Badlands and the<br />
Black Hills draw<strong>in</strong>g curious <strong>to</strong>urists <strong>to</strong> the<br />
state. He had heard of Borglum who had<br />
been work<strong>in</strong>g on a statue of Robert E. Lee<br />
which he was carv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ne Mounta<strong>in</strong>,<br />
Georgia.<br />
Borglum had already ga<strong>in</strong>ed no<strong>to</strong>riety from<br />
his carv<strong>in</strong>g of the head of Abraham L<strong>in</strong>coln<br />
which is displayed <strong>in</strong> the White House. He<br />
had studied <strong>in</strong> Paris and worked under the<br />
famous sculp<strong>to</strong>r <strong>Aug</strong>uste Rod<strong>in</strong>. When the<br />
massive project began on Mount Rushmore<br />
the idea was <strong>to</strong> complete busts of two presidents,<br />
Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n and L<strong>in</strong>coln, however,<br />
the Louisiana Purchase by Jefferson and<br />
the Panama Canal purchase under Theodore<br />
Roosevelt exemplify<strong>in</strong>g the Manifest<br />
Dest<strong>in</strong>y or the empire build<strong>in</strong>g ambitions<br />
of the United States, encouraged the planners<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude these two presidents <strong>in</strong> the<br />
sculpture.<br />
Borglum was a controversial figure<br />
throughout his life. He was married twice<br />
with two children born of his second<br />
marriage, a daughter, and son. His son,<br />
L<strong>in</strong>coln, also a sculp<strong>to</strong>r, completed Mount<br />
Rushmore after his father’s death <strong>in</strong> 1941.<br />
Borglum was also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> politics and<br />
earned publicity <strong>in</strong> a dispute with President<br />
Woodrow Wilson after be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g malpractice <strong>in</strong> aircraft manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g World War I. Throughout<br />
his life he was outspoken and frequently<br />
argued with f<strong>in</strong>anciers and others <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
<strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g his projects. He did, however,<br />
leave a legacy of his<strong>to</strong>rical monuments<br />
represent<strong>in</strong>g a visual his<strong>to</strong>ry of the emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
United States <strong>to</strong> be seen throughout<br />
posterity.<br />

I am diagnosed with depression and<br />
anxiety. It’s a battle as an enterta<strong>in</strong>er,<br />
especially. It’s actually very common<br />
among enterta<strong>in</strong>ers. The irony of it<br />
all.<br />
Let’s give you a disease that draws<br />
you <strong>in</strong> when your job is <strong>to</strong> be out<br />
and proud.<br />
When you have no desire for life,<br />
boy is it <strong>to</strong>ugh. I’ve done it many,<br />
many, many times! It’s part of the<br />
job. I’m here <strong>to</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong> you!!!<br />

Maup<strong>in</strong> - the new documentary about the<br />
beloved writer of the Tales of the City novels,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the mid-seventies and cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />
through 2010. Armistead Maup<strong>in</strong> is set <strong>to</strong><br />
attend the open<strong>in</strong>g night event, where he<br />
will participate <strong>in</strong> a Q&A, receive a lifetime<br />
achievement award, and sign copies of<br />
his upcom<strong>in</strong>g memoir, Logical Family: A<br />
Memoir, which will not otherwise be available<br />
until Oc<strong>to</strong>ber.<br />
C<strong>in</strong>ema Diverse opens on Thursday, September<br />
21st and cont<strong>in</strong>ues through Sunday,<br />
September 24th at the Camelot Theatres<br />

a special Best of Fest celebration will take<br />
place at the Mary Pickford Theatres, with<br />

Saturday, September 30th.<br />

award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g LGBTQ films that have<br />
come out this year,” said Michael C. Green,<br />

festivals owned and operated by The <strong>Palm</strong><br />

Ric and Rozene Supple <strong>to</strong> encourage<br />

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis<br />
The circus <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ued this <strong>week</strong><br />
with fights, recrim<strong>in</strong>ations, leaks, term<strong>in</strong>ations;<br />
and all from with<strong>in</strong> the White House. Our own<br />
Bozo the Clown cannot, even with new Chief of<br />
Staff, s<strong>to</strong>p his use of Twitter. He attacked the Congress<br />
of his own party and then left on ANOTHER<br />
vacation. He is close <strong>to</strong> spend<strong>in</strong>g more time out on<br />
holiday <strong>in</strong> his first six months than Mr. Obama did<br />
<strong>in</strong> four years.<br />
He did go <strong>to</strong> West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia for a rally where he<br />
attacked – guess who? – Hillary. I swear he doesn’t<br />
get that he is liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the White House. Oooops<br />
– we found out <strong>in</strong> Sports Illustrated, of all places,<br />
that he th<strong>in</strong>ks the WH is a “dump”. I’ve been at<br />
the WH and it is no dump. And certa<strong>in</strong>ly not<br />
gaudy like all the Trump hotels and <strong>to</strong>wers he litters<br />
across the world. While there he also boasted<br />
about the growth <strong>in</strong> the coal <strong>in</strong>dustry s<strong>in</strong>ce he has<br />
been Prez. Well, I have <strong>to</strong> give him credit – that<br />
much is true.<br />
He has lifted environmental safeguards that have<br />
been <strong>in</strong> place for years, helped open a new m<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>in</strong> Pennsylvania (not West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia) and began <strong>to</strong><br />
dirty the air aga<strong>in</strong> after strong attempts <strong>in</strong> both<br />
states <strong>to</strong> beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> clean up their land and air.<br />
Congress also left for a month vacation with no<br />
new health care legislation, no tax reform, no<br />
simplification of government. They only did two<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs of importance and those were done <strong>in</strong> a<br />
bipartisan manner. Sanctions on Russia and North<br />
Korea and keep<strong>in</strong>g the President from mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
recess appo<strong>in</strong>tments while they were gone so he<br />
couldn’t arrange <strong>to</strong> fire the Independent Counsel,<br />
Robert Mueller.<br />

Once the holidays and vacations are over, legisla<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
will have just about 18 days, give or take,<br />
<strong>to</strong> raise the debt ceil<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> fund the<br />
government. Will see if the far right will attempt<br />
a shut down like they did under the past Adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />
Today it was reported that the State Department is<br />
shedd<strong>in</strong>g 1/3 of its diplomatic workforce. So much<br />
for “mak<strong>in</strong>g America Great Aga<strong>in</strong>”. And transcripts<br />
of discussions with the Prime M<strong>in</strong>ister of<br />
Australia and President of Mexico show us what a<br />
boob this man is. Claim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be the “greatest man<br />
<strong>in</strong> the world” and how these two world leaders are<br />
try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> make him look bad.<br />
One suggestion Mr. President – Man up and take<br />
responsibility for your own actions!<br />
Labor Day there will be a Resistance Rally at the<br />
Cathedral City Town Square Park by the Civic<br />
Center. It will be from 5:30pm – 7:00pm and feature<br />
speakers from local and county government,<br />
education, healthcare, environment and more.<br />
There will even be kid’s activities so folks can br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the family. Come jo<strong>in</strong> us as the valley says NO <strong>to</strong><br />
Donald Trump and his regressive policies!<br />
Well, that’s it for this <strong>week</strong>. Keep mov<strong>in</strong>g forward<br />

subpoenas and possible <strong>in</strong>dictments of friends, Southern CA Association of Governments.<br />
