Hippocrates said more than
2400 years ago that “all disease
begins in the gut” but we are
only now coming to understand just
how right he was.
We marvel at the processing ability of
the human brain and the heart amazes us
with its continued pumping marathon. We
fuss over our nails and hair. However we
take the “gut” for granted. Yet the faithful
“gut” is where our wellness begins and often
holds the key to good health.
The gut (digestive system) is a pathway
starting at the mouth and ending at the
anus. It is responsible for extracting the nutrients
needed and eliminating the wastes
and toxins. It is the motor to our body and
we have a lot to thank our digestive system
for.
Research over the past years has revealed
that the gut is critical to overall good
health and that an unhealthy gut contributes
to a wide range of diseases including:
constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome,
Diverticulosis, Crohn’s, thrush, bloating,
diarrhoea, low energy, reflux, depression,
fatigue, colds, flu, stress, poor immunity to
sickness and much more.
More than 80 percent of our immunity
to sickness and disease comes directly from
our gut. The importance of looking after our
gut is paramount to overall good health.
In fact many researchers believe that
supporting gut health and restoring the
good bacteria will be one of the most important
goals of medicine in the 21st century.
Good bacteria become depleted thru:
natural ageing, stress, certain medication,
junk food, and many other factors due to
today’s busy lifestyle.
It can take as much as six months to replace
these good bacteria and that’s if we
don’t have another setback.
So the question is: How serious are you
really about good health? Because we know
“The Yoghurt Capsule” rebuilds and restores
good bacteria in the digestive system
(gut) naturally.
Our seniors should check
SuperSeniors website
Together with Prime
Minister John Key, I recently
launched a new website
designed to make it easier
for older people to access
what they need to know.
It’s called SuperSeniors, and was
unveiled along with a new Facebook
page, Twitter feed and newsletter
in September – I’d encourage
everyone to have a look at www.superseniors.msd.govt.nz
, and we’d
welcome your feedback and ideas
about issues you’d be interested in.
Since becoming Minister for Senior
Citizens, I’ve listened to what older people
across the country have been telling me
about their worries and concerns, and
their frustration that it is difficult to get
the information they are looking for easily
in one place.
SuperSeniors is designed to fill that
gap. It is a one-stop website which will
pull together the wealth of information
available on things like superannuation
entitlements, Enduring Power of Attorney,
falls prevention initiatives, efforts to
tackle elder abuse and social isolation and
SuperGold Card discounts.
There will be useful articles and regular
contributions from groups like Grey
Power, Age Concern and experts like Retirement
Commissioner, Diane Maxwell.
It also features helpful details about local
groups who are connecting with older
people and where you can go to exercise,
make friends and try new things.
I want more seniors to be connected,
informed and able to lead active, meaningful
and positive lives, and SuperSeniors
will help achieve those goals.
Since the launch, the website has had
more than 30,000 visitors and we’ve seen
almost 5000 people follow on Facebook.
You don’t have to open an account, but
have a look by visiting www.facebook.
com/OfficeforSeniorCitizens .
We have also launched a SuperSeniors
newsletter which is emailed out every
couple of months to more than 200,000
people – ensuring as many people as possible
get access to the information.
There’s a stereotype that seniors don’t
use technology, which simply isn’t borne
out by the facts – 61 percent of people aged
over 65 and 32 percent of people aged over
75 used the internet last year, and with our
ageing population the number of older internet
users is set to increase dramatically.
Older people are mastering Facebook,
Twitter and Skype. They know what a PC
13679
Maggie Barry
is and how to use one, and they’re improving
their skills all the time.
We also know around 50 percent of
seniors regularly use a smartphone.
There’s a clear, and growing, market for
online resources for older people, so a onestop
website which speaks directly to them
is timely.
Older New Zealanders do great things
in their communities, and SuperSeniors
website and newsletters are about telling
those stories too.
As I told the Grey Power AGM in Rotorua
earlier this year, I’m sick and tired of
hearing about how an ageing population is
a problem for this country.
Seniors are the backbone of our society
and highly respected and regarded by
many of the clubs and organisations which
enrich our towns and cities.
As Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister,
I know that many museums, theatre
groups and galleries could not survive
without senior volunteers, who also make
a big contribution to conservation groups.
The Business of Ageing report released
in June estimated that by 2051, seniors
will be putting in $35 billion in unpaid and
voluntary work each year, up from $8.5
billion in 2011. This represents a large
group of active consumers that retailers
and businesses ignore at their peril.
Seniors are already putting billions of
dollars into our economy each year and we
know that is only going to grow. The same
report estimated older people will spend
around $65 billion a year in 2051, up from
$14 billion in 2011.
Business is starting to wake up to the
opportunities this gives them, and through
the development of SuperSeniors I have
been able to push for better, more meaningful
deals through the SuperGold Card
scheme. We’re taking a targeted approach
to sign up more health professionals who
focus on ears, eyes and teeth, for example,
as well as lawyers and funeral directors.
