Health is a little like the never
ending story. As one chapter ends
there are many more to follow.
The unfortunate part of ill health is
that it affects a person’s ability to
enjoy the quality of life which we
have become accustomed to.

As Grey Power
moves towards its
30 year anniversary
it is really pleasing
to see that the Health
Portfolio or as it is now
known, the Health National
Advisory Group,
has always been one of
the major focuses of
the organisation.
Although we still have
a number of issues to resolve
the great work done
by previous and present
chairs and committee
members has resulted in
some very good outcomes.
Grey Power has a number
of members on various
consumer groups in
the health sector.
These people have
been appointed or invited
to participate due to their
ability to contribute in no
small way to better outcomes
for all consumers
but more especially those
in the older age group.
Our advocacy visits
to Pharmac meant that
we were able to get very
good in-depth and invaluable
information on the
change to the diabetic
meters which had caused
a considerable amount
of fear and concern to
users. It was very heartening
to hear the belief
from members in the new
meters once they fully understood
exactly how they
worked.
Another very good
outcome has been that
Pharmac also keep us informed
of any changes in
funded medications and
other areas they may be
looking at.
We have also established
a very good direct
contact within the Ministry
of Health and this

has helped in being able
to have any requests for
information being sent
to the right personnel.
Another plus is the new
direction the Ministry of
Health is taking in that it
is now more focused on
clients rather than funding.
It is also interesting
to see that this attitude is
slowly creeping into some
district health boards.
It is to be hoped that this
will assist as we continue to
work through the frustrating
elective surgery issues
which seem to be increasing
rather than declining.
Even if we cannot resolve
all the problems if the
client becomes more important
they may receive
better explanations rather
than the current situation
of “you do not meet the criteria”
or “you do not meet
the threshold”.
From time-to-time we
have put out surveys to you
and I would like, on behalf
of my committee, to thank
you all most sincerely for
your responses. The one
response we get to all our
advocacy issues is “Give
us the stories.” It is your
information which enables
us to go to these meetings
and explain how different
In our modern world
everybody should pursue
a healthy lifestyle,
of which I say being
healthy is not by accident
but by pursuing
the right choices.
The classic medical
model did not cater for
much other than chemical
options and surgery.
Luckily an American
Natural Medical university
brought in a new course
for medical students and a
post-graduate called “Lifestyle
Medicine”.
One outcome of this is
the so-called CHIP diet
(Cardio Health Improvement
Program) by which
thousands, or by now millions
of lives have been
improved, some of which

of our Western diet causes
the wrong utilisation of
calcium, producing plaque
in arteries, veins, etc, and
crippling stones in the
