“To serve our patients”
From Dr Stephen Child, chair, New Zealand Medical Association
Following the atrocities and medical
experimenting of WWII, the World
Medical Association combined to
reaffirm and modernise the original
Hippocratic Oath.
The subsequent
statement is known
as the Declaration
of Geneva and has been
updated regularly by
subsequent WMA meetings.
This document is the
MOH prostate cancer management
From page 3
best, latest information
about prostate cancer.
And when prostate
cancer is just one of
the many things a general
practitioner needs
to know about, the new
guidance will give doctors
most of what they
need to know when consulted
by men about
prostate health.
In particular, this
guidance will help them
to identify the men who
should be tested, and
how to interpret the test
results and what to do if
modern template for the
medical profession, and
begins:
“I pledge to consecrate
my life to the services of
humanity”. This means
the core of our professionalism
is to “serve our
further advice or treatment
is indicated.
Failure by health professionals
to be up-to-date
and to act on available
guidance can have literally
fatal consequences when
a man’s prostate cancer is
not detected early enough
or is not treated properly.
The new 2015 Prostate
Cancer Management and
Referral Guidance should
not be seen as an end in
itself.
It needs to be understood
and implemented
by general practitioners
and health professionals
patients”.
What does this mean
today? Has it changed
over time? Do we still
serve?
Indeed the whole concept
of service seems to
have changed somewhat
over the generations.
WWII veterans signed a
conscription form that offered
their lives to “King
and Country’. Sacrificing
oneself for others was
seen by society then as a
virtue to a greater extent
all around the country.
That may require some
retraining and further
professional development,
and may also require
some doctors to
re-examine their understanding
of prostate cancer
issues.
The Prostate Cancer
Foundation is committed
to providing awareness
campaigns and information
and also providing
support to men, and their
families, who are living
with a diagnosis and
treatment of prostate cancer
