Richard’s Ramblings ..….….. THE JOURNEY I left home at 9 am Friday. Along the A28 without drama, unless you count the driver who insists on following about three feet from my back bumper, right onto the A21 at Flimwell - quite good progress made. Negotiated the roadworks, where there is a 50mph speed limit, I was doing 50 - still being overtaken though. The A21 itself was not too bad unless you count the driver who, for some reason I still cannot fathom, overtook me on the dual carriageway when I was travelling at 70, only to pull abruptly in front and apply his brakes. Left onto the M25 clockwise, busy but moving well. I had plenty of time so was content with the nearside lane and 60 to 70 mph. All was going well until for some unaccountable reason a coach, presumably driven by a professional driver, used an exit lane to overtake me on the nearside and pull in front. This, together with people who overtook me at speed before swerving across in front of me, braking and then taking the exit lane, led me to believe that I was involved in some bizarre experiment. Then onto the M4 and I gladly went into Reading Services where, having bought a coffee I surveyed the other drivers. I sincerely hoped that the elderly man with a white cane and an assistance dog was someone's passenger although he seemed to be unaccompanied. After a decent leg stretch I continued through to Wiltshire without incident. My return journey began on Sunday at 10 am. I had plenty of time and decided not to use the motorways again so drove across Salisbury Plain - a road I often use but have never seen a "Tank Crossing" (Ed: neither have I!) towards Stonehenge and the usual congestion there getting onto the A303 (Ed: and the pigs; Telegraph readers may know what I mean). I was still being overtaken regularly while travelling at the national speed limit. Then I’m onto the A34 southwards towards the Southampton Portsmouth area. Not a bad road that one. I turned on the radio for some music. A traffic report tells of a serious crash on the A27 near Chichester with traffic queues of some five miles. Apparently the Fire Brigade were cutting the roofs off the cars involved - that is something they do really well; I sincerely hoped that someone would stop them before they reached the cars which were not involved. I deviate onto the A272 eastbound, slow but a known route. It is not long before I encounter a slow moving queue of my own. The culprit was a steam traction engine towing a tin caravan at walking speed. Overtake that and further on was another one; deal with him and it’s a multitude of horseboxes. Why is it that horses, designed to take a human passenger and can travel over most terrain, like to be taken on sightseeing trips very slowly in a trailer along narrow country lanes? There were scores of them. I was still being followed, most of the way, by someone seemingly attached to my back bumper. I was reassured that I had taken the right route by reports of ever increasing queues on the A27 and congestion on the M25. I am not a slow driver, regularly driving at the limit when safe to do so. I do object to other drivers trying to kill me. I have nothing of interest in the back of my car so why I always seem to be towing someone is a puzzle. Driving is no longer the pleasure it once was.
