Westfield Community Association Newsletter
No. 161 August 2017
I
can never be sure from one newsletter to the next what I’ll have to fill the
pages, apart from the growing number of advertisers who continue to find
this a good way to promote their services. Thank you to the regular
contributors who note the deadline dates below and to those who give me all the
other details.
Since the last issue we have had a successful WCA Village Fete as you’ll see on
page 24 and begun a fresh year for the fund-raising Westfield Draw which gives
subscribers a chance of a cash prize each month. There are about the same
number of names as previous years - 280 for what used to be called the 300 Club.
More people paid their £10 online this time, which was a great help, whilst others
used the box at The New Inn (thanks Patrick) and some were lucky enough to
have one of my helpers call to collect - thanks to everyone for their support.
The Grooming Room changed it’s name to Barking Boutique and duly opened in
Chapel Lane.
Sometimes news travels fast round a village, though still manages to miss people
out. Many were stunned by the sudden death of Rama Patel of Westfield Londis
then it was sad to learn that one of our oldest residents, Fred Milward, has also
passed away.
On a lighter note in this issue, thanks to Ron Allen in his Plough Pool report, there
is some entertainment in the form of ‘spot the film titles’ page 33, try to avoid
looking at the answers on page 14 first! Richard’s Ramblings on page 16 is also
quite amusing.
We wish Sylvia Huggett well on her fund-raising run for our local hospice, page 9.
Exam results have received mixed emotions recently for many. Best wishes to
everyone whose future was depending on them - I’ve heard that Richard (ex-
Westfield News) has gained a First for his recent studies.
An early reminder to mark on your calendar, subject to confirmation in
November’s newsletter: the WCA’s Carols round the Christmas Tree will be as
usual at Corbieres, with thanks to Jean Tomsett, on Friday 15 December. These
began all those years ago as an opportunity to give back to the village for all the
fund-raising which had taken place for the Community Hall; there has
never been any charge for joining in the singing or the delicious
homemade soup.
As I write we are still in August - let’s hope the summer weather lasts
well into the autumn.
