However, due to various unforeseen circumstances, our numbers dropped so we needed to cancel. Then unfortunately the boat trip itself was cancelled due to the absolutely horrible weather earlier in the week of 7 June which apparently resulted in the boat not being where it was scheduled to be. Another trip, this time to see what happens to the various recycled materials that we dispose of, was also cancelled, and it began to look like trips just weren’t meant to happen. That all changed though with a short notice self-drive visit to Eastbourne to see an absolutely hilarious comedy at the Devonshire Park Theatre, so another one actually in the bag! Not sure if it’s polite to mention that the main singer from the theatre production was later unceremoniously chatted up during the post theatre dinner as apparently he was ‘so nice, and he was so much younger than he looked on stage’ – but, no names, no pack drill. Similar attendances will definitely be organised in future. It seems a long time ago, but we should mention that Hub volunteers manned a stall with several activities at the <strong>WCA</strong> Village Fete. That was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, especially as the stall position in the field meant there was a good view of the arena events and entertainments during the very few quieter moments. No quizzes have been held over the past couple of months – partly because people have tended to arrive later in the Friday morning session - which doesn’t leave enough time to complete the various challenges. So this is just a reminder that you can arrive any time between 10am and midday. A couple of other potential trips are back on the cards and although it seems far too early to be thinking of December, attendance at a Christmas pantomime is being considered now so that the best seats may be booked. 1 ST WESTFIELD SCOUT GROUP hat a wonderful summer we have had enabling us to W do many outside activities and make use of our lovely grounds, thanks to Larry. We went to the beach, the woods and out in the countryside doing various things to keep the youngsters interested. The term ended with a water based evening for both Beavers and Cubs which culminated with everyone getting very wet on a waterslide in the HQ garden. The end of term camp fire and barbeque was a great evening, well attended by parents and families. After hot dogs, burgers and Clare’s wonderful cup cakes, the District Commissioner presented one Beaver and three Cubs with their Chief Scout Challenge awards. These are the highest awards that they can achieve in the section and take a lot of hard work, well done. The usual camp fire songs followed, ably led by Frances, and much enjoyed by the young people. The summer camp this year is at Broadstone Warren; nine cubs have signed up and will, I am sure, enjoy the many activities such as grass sledging, climbing, archery, potholes, go karts and much more.
