THE ECONOMICS OF ART
The recent election of Donald Trump has
exposed the flawed system of capitalist
economics that has plagued the U. S. and
negatively affected the rest of the world for
over a century. POLITICS AND GREED
have merged to suggest that all goods and
services should be privately owned and sold
to continue to protect the fortunes of a very
small number of greed mongers.
Examples would include the take over of
public utilities and infrastructure such as
electricity, roads, health care, and now,
the completely incompetent, Betsy DeVos,
Trump’s Secretary of Education is suggesting
that education should be privatized to
make her wealth, and that of others in her
one-percent category increase their wealth
on educating the populace. These are a few
examples of where economics have corrupted
needed services and is attempting to
encroach on other areas of social need.
Art and artist have been influenced by the
economy for at least 3 centuries. Before
the 1800’s art as a commodity was different
than it has become in the modern era. In
the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance
art was commissioned by a patron
who paid the artist to create a work of art.
The patron controlled the subject, the materials
that would be used, and how the work
would look.
creative innovators and thinkers and some
of this identification began to attribute to
them during this period of history. However,
it was not until the 19th century that
visual artists began to attain the star status
that some artist such as Picasso, Andy Warhol,
Jeff Koons and others have gained.
Art is not just a commodity to be bought
and sold it is an understanding, a participation,
and an appreciation in the activities
of life. Uffe Elbaek, the former minister of
culture in Denmark stated this very clearly:
“We need new ideas, we need new ways of
doing things and we need a whole new way
of aproaching each other with much more
empathy and understanding. This means
that.... society really needs to focus on the
world of art and culture as a vital source
of not only solutions but of ways of finding
solutions...and a whole new concept of
what life really means.”
No one is born with greed, prejudice, bigotry,
and hatred, these are learned behaviors
that can be either advanced or continued by
politicians and people of influence or they
can be rebuked and rejected. Artist of all
categories can and do influence the positive
aspects of life and society, they need to be
recognized and supported for their contribution
to a better society.
Questions, Comments, Suggestions, contact
- adamsartexpose@gmail.com
This isn’t what you would call creative freedom.
Today visual artists, unless they specifically
work as commercial artists, paint,
draw, what they are paid to create. During
the Rennaissance the artist was seen as a
craftsman, who worked with his or her
hands. Artist wanted to be considered as
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by jersey Shore
The day after I turned eighteen I kissed
the folks goodbye, got on a Trailways bus,
and headed for the big bad apple. Because I
wanted to be a Rockette.
Let’s get one thing straight. I never heard
about the Red Shoes. I never saw the Red
Shoes. I didn’t give a fuck about the Red
Shoes.
There was this girl in my hometown Luella
Hyner, she had actually gotten out. She was
a Rockette. Well, the big day finally came
and I get off the bus and my little white
shoes, my little white dress, my little white
tights, and my long blonde hair. I looked
like a fucking nurse.
Well, I got to Radio City and I would dance
rings around the other girls and find myself
in the alley with the other Rejects. This
man asked if I could do fan kicks. I could
do terrific fan kicks. The problem wasn’t
the fan kicks, it was my looks. So I said
fuck you Radio City and The Rockettes,
I’m going to dance on Broadway. Broadway
same story.
I also stole my dance card one afternoon
audition, and on a scale of 10, they gave me
a 10 for Dance and 3 for looks. Well!
Peace, Love and Looks,
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
I’m currently in Tampa, Florida for a meeting of the
Democratic Municipal Officials Board of Directors.
When this meeting was booked, who would have
thought we would be in path of a summer storm, let
alone Hurricane Irma!
We are continuing to do our work and meeting with
the Mayor and Councilmember’s as they go about
the work of preparing their city for any possibility.
It has been interesting to see how the city get’s ready
for a natural disaster. At least here, unlike New
Orleans or some other city, they seem to be ready
and know what to do.
I guess the test for me will come if my flight can still
get out Sunday morning. If not, I will be riding out
the storm in my hotel room. I’m on the 23rd floor
so flooding isn’t really an issue but you can imagine
other issues that may occur. No other flights available
out of city. The one option I was given was to
rent a car - drive 7.5 hours to Pensacola and fly from
there. That just didn’t make any sense. So here I am.
I may have some interesting stories to tell after this.
In the meantime, we are seeing more dysfunction
out of Washington. The President is all over the
place. Continuing his assault on immigrants and
LGBTQ folks. Also continues to undermine his
own Republican partners. One does wonder how
long Speaker Ryan will stand by him. It does seem
as if he has totally allowed himself to become 100%
subservient to the whims of #45.
Members of Congress (on the R side) are beginning
to announce their retirements. I believe it is eight
so far. More are expected. No one on the Senate
side has made any announcement but that may be
coming soon. Things are pointing for the Democrats
to take back the House if they are able to
recruit solid candidates.
York while we are here at this meeting as their elections
are coming up soon and will have full slates to
review in November when we meet again.
Mid-October the Democratic National Committee
will be meeting in November and doing a full
review of the Congressional landscape and what we
will need to do to take advantage of these opportunities.
We also will be discussing the continued
resistance to the President.
His legislative program is going no where but
administratively and executive actions are frightening.
Total roll back of Obama era actions and even
much more reactionary.
We are very fortunate to live in California and to
some extent sheltered, but his activities will affect
us as well as our fellow Americans across the country.
Today he even has changed Justice Department
positions in court on protections for LGBTQ people.
It is essential that we remain vigilant and resist
ALWAYS. We cannot be lackadaisical and say oh, I
don’t like that person or that candidate so I will sit
out the election or think that our vote doesn’t matter.
IT DOES MATTER.
Your involvement is critical. Your vote is critical.
Your donations and volunteer time is critical.
That’s it for this week. Rise up and RESIST!
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in
Cathedral City. Greg was the first openly
gay elected city council members In Riverside
County. He has served on the boards
of the National League of Cities and the
League of California Cities and as President
of the Southern CA Association of
Governments.
The Democratic Municipal Officials are also
recruiting candidates for city positions around the
country. We will be endorsing candidates in New
