Butternut Squash & Bacon Risotto 

1 leek, washed and finely chopped 

200g lean bacon, cut into bite-sized pieces 

4 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 

250g dried risotto rice 

400g butternut squash, cut into small bite-sized pieces 

850ml boiling hot chicken stock 

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 

4 tbsp finely chopped fresh chives 

Method 

1. Heat a large, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the leek and bacon and 

stir-fry for 3-4 minutes. 

2. Add the garlic, rice and butternut squash and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes. Add a ladleful 

of the boiling stock and stir and cook until the liquid is absorbed. Repeat adding a 

ladleful at a time, until half the stock is used up. 

3. Continue to cook in this way until all the stock is used up and the rice is creamy 

and al dente (tender but still retaining a bite), and the squash is tender. This should 

take about 20-25minutes. 

4. Remove from the heat, season well and stir in the chopped chives. Serve ladled into 

warmed bowls and eat immediately.

Heywood Charities 

Fete & Parade 2017 

This year’s Charities Fete was a huge success attracting lots of families 

who lined the streets to watch the colourful parade through Heywood 

with numerous community groups, local businesses and organisations 

taking part including Roach Dynamos Junior Football Club, Blue Rose 

Gifts, Kats Dance, Friends of Hopwood Park, Birch Farm Old Fashioned 

Ice cream, Character Closet, 3rd/4th Heywood Ravenscroft Scout Group, 

1st Heywood St John’s Scouting Group, 8th Heywood St Luke’s Scout 

Group, Heywood Girl Guide Section and many more. 

The parade ended at Queen’s Park which was filled with stalls from 

a variety of local charities including Sandon House, Little Monkeys, 

Heywood in Bloom and Heywood Lions. Lots of entertainment and 

activities for all ages were provided. Heywood Fire Fighters were in 

attendance with an appliance for the children to explore. 

Heywood Veterans Association assisted by marshalling the parade and 

Heywood Rotary Club provided stewards at the Fete. Also enjoying the 

day, MP Liz McInnes,, Heywood councillors and the Deputy Mayor and 

Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Mohammed Zaman and Naaira Zaman. 

With a theme of “book titles”, this year’s winners of the float category 

were Hey Kids (HAODS) with “Annie”. The winners of the walking section 

were Back o’th Moss Community Centre with “Alice in Wonderland”. 

Everyone involved put in a great deal of effort to contribute to a fantastic, 

memorable day for Heywood. 

The Heywood Charities Fete Committee would like to thank everyone

Heywood 

in Bloom 

October 

The team of Heywood in Bloom has been busy 

organising its 2017 garden competition. We have 

had the pleasure of visiting some beautiful gardens 

across Heywood. The winners have been chosen 

with vouchers for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and a 

certificate for each entry. 

New planters have been purchased ready for next 

year and we are looking at the best places to 

position them. The new planters will be sponsored 

by local companies along with some of our other 

planters which are already being sponsored. We 

are also in talks with a large local business who are 

interested in completing a project we have chosen to 

complete next year. 

This year’s entry into North West in Bloom was 

bigger than ever, we had several new entries to our 

judging route. The results will be over three days at 

Southport, Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd 

November with results being announced on the day. 

Last year we obtained 12 awards overall several 

being top awards of Gold Standard. The award of a 

Gold Standard for Heywood, TOPS, The Industrial 

Park and Queens Park made it all worth-while. 

New entries this year are now looking forward 

excitedly to the results, we welcomed another 

primary school and another care home to our route. 

The children are now getting ready to choose who 

goes to collect their award. We are putting together 

the list of names to attend at Southport and getting 

our stall ready for the Friday event.

The Heywood in Bloom allotment has 

flourished under the care of our two new 

volunteers, lots of new vegetables have 

been grown by Ania and Alicja. The fruit 

trees have produced another bumper crop 

and we have added some new fruit tree 

saplings. The allotment will be welcoming 

more groups of school children to take part 

in projects we have lined up, the first one 

being a bug hunt and bug house building. 

We have been organising two joint 

fundraising events, one which took place 

in September which was a seventies night 

at the Albany and the other which will be 

will be a brass band in November at the 

Heywood. 

Gardening 

Tips for 

October 

1. Take cuttings now if you have 

any favourite garden plants. 

They will root rapidly and 

develop into small healthy 

specimens, keep them frost 

free for next year. This works 

well with geraniums, 

fuchsias, lantanas and any 

tender perennial plants. 

2. Always choose healthy shoots 

when selecting your cuttings. 

Select young shoots, remove 

lower leaves then root them 

in a mix of compost and grit. 

Keep your cuttings wellwatered, 

you can place a half 

inflated plastic bag over them 

to hasten rooting. 

3. Plant all small bulbs as soon 

as you can they will start to 

dehydrate and produce 

premature roots. Small bulbs 

such as narcissus, snowdrops 

and crocuses need at least 

7cm of soil above them. 

4. If the ground is too hard for 

you to plant spring bulbs, 

start by planting crocuses, 

scillas and smaller daffodils in 

pots. Small terracotta pots are 

ideal, add grit to the compost 

for drainage. Place the pots in 

a sheltered area, then move 

them into the sun when new 

growth appears.

Seared Rump of Lamb Chermoula 

Serves 4 

One of my favourite ways of cooking lamb, the rump is seared in hot oil until the fat has 

caramelised, sprinkled with the Chermoula spices, cooked till pink then served sliced with a 

cool crème fraiche. It makes the most amazing midnight snack rolled up in a tortilla wrap. 

Traditionally the meat is left to marinade in the Chermoula spices overnight and then fried but 

I find it overpowers the delicate flavours of the lamb, that’s why I opt just to sear it at the last 

minute and toast the spices. 

Ingredients 

2 tablespoons of olive oil 

4 x 160g rump of lamb 

2 cloves garlic - crushed 

2 teaspoons cayenne 

2 teaspoons paprika 

2 teaspoons cumin 

Zest and juice of ½ lemon 

2 tablespoons of coriander-chopped 

1 tablespoon of flat leaf parsley-chopped 

1 cucumber cut into spaghetti strips 

6 tablespoons crème fraiche 

Juice ½ lemon 

Few leaves fresh coriander 

Method 

1. Heat the olive oil, season the rump of lamb and 

seal on both sides. 

2. Mix together the garlic, cayenne , paprika, cumin, 

lemon, coriander and parsley scatter over the 

lamb then place in a hot oven 180ºc for 5 minutes 

or until cooked to your liking. Leave to rest. 

3. Mix together the crème fraiche, lemon and 

coriander, season and place in the fridge until the 

lamb is ready. 

4. When ready to serve, arrange the cucumber 

spaghetti on a plate, slice the loin of lamb and 

place on top and finally serve with the lemon 

crème fraiche.
