groups will face off in the junior boxing
trials for boys and girls at the Mlungisi
Boxing Centre this weekend.
Chris Hani Amateur Boxing Organisation
(CHABO) secretary Mabuti Mapeyi said the trials
were in preparation for the Steve Tshwete
Provincial Games from November 28 to
December 2 in East London.
“Unfortunately, there are no nationals set to
take place after the provincial games.
“The provinces are still negotiating and there
are hopes that by next year there might be
national games as well,” he said.
Mapeyi said the South African Local
Government Association (Salga) Games and the
Premier Games had been the forerunners of the
Steve Tshwete Games in the Eastern Cape with
codes accommodated including boxing,
THE Stutterheim Country Club’s
annual hockey festival drew 18 teams
from as far afield as Komani, Port
Alfred, Cradock, Grahamstown and
East London at the weekend.
The festival has shown growth,
with this year’s number of teams
increasing from last year’s 13.
A total of 10 women’s and eight
men’s teams did battle with Brenda
and Clinton Schwartz from
Stutterheim the conveners.
The format was seven-a-side
hockey with rolling substitutions.
Each team had about 10 players.
At the end of Sunday afternoon it
was the women’s team of Bohemians
who won, with Rhodes the
runners-up. In the men’s section, the
Port Alfred team took top honours
with the Stutt Invitation XI as
runners-up.
The women’s player of the
tournament was Jamie-Lee Marais of
IT WAS heartbreak for
Queen’s College as it lost
the Hirsch Shield for U19
athletics – an honour it
had claimed for the past
15 years – during the
centenary celebrations of
the event in Port
Elizabeth at the weekend.
The results for the
Hirsch shield, SF Edwards
trophy (U16) and Sammy
Gunn shield (U14) were
not available, but Queen’s
managed to secure third
spot with Grey High
School claiming the
Hirsch Shield and St
Andrew’s College taking
second place.
Queen’s shared the
Mosenthal Cup for sprints
with St Andrew’s and won
the Olivier CUP for
throws.
Queen’s also won the
Louis du Plessis cup for
field events.
