Australia Wide
21 December, so if you are holidaying in sunny,
tropical Cairns during that period, don't forget
to come and look at the exhibition at the Cairns
Regional Gallery.
Together w ith two other club members, I have
just returned from a very exciting visit to Zum in
village in Morobe District of PNG . Last year two
potters from the village visited Ca irns as guests of
our Sister Cities International Ceramic Exhibition
Earth Links and they decided to return the
hospitality. We had a great time experiencing
village life without some modern comforts (no
electricity or running water). A two-day pottery
and dance festival was organised while we were
there with pottery making and firings from
various villages being demonstrated. During the
festival, the Zumin village people received money
from the Government to build a pottery house
where young people can learn pottery-making
in order to keep the tradition alive and explore
new ways of making pottery. The pottery house
idea came after visiting our club in Cairns. Two of
the potters are now planning to come to Cairns
to study other pottery techniques and firing
methods.
Another festival is planned for 2010 and the
village would like potters from other parts of
Australia to come for a great cultural experience.
I will keep you posted.
The Gold Coast Potters' Association Members'
Exh ibition 2009 was held in September with
27 entrants, ranging from students to ceramic
artists who have exhibited in international shows,
putting their skills on show
The exhibition was judged by well-known
ceramic artist Suvira Macdonald. Nanette Hall
took out the Ruth Lyons Encouragement Award
and her work was selected for the Heather
W ilton Memorial Award, an acquisition award
for the Gold Coast Potters' Association Historical
Collection. Lyn Reeves was awarded the W illy
Toomey Memorial Award for a student handbuilt
work. Anne Mossman 's delicate porcelain
pieces were honored w ith the Complementary
Set of Pots Award. The themed Spring Award
was presented to Megan Puis for her porcelain
cylinder Billy. The overa ll winner was Di
Buckland for her depiction of "the everchanging
bands of colour as the tides ebb and flow
and the varied traffic of the Broadwater" .
We had admired Di 's Broadwater Views, a
range of wall tiles depicting the view over the
Broadwater at Labrador on the Gold Coast in
previous exhibitions, but this work along w ith
her new Broadwater Sails to complement it,
was an award-winning combination. Information
on the Gold Coast Potters' Association and
Clay Art Benowa can be viewed on www.
goldcoastpotters.com. On this website, Michaela
Kloeckner's personal account of the Australian
Ceramics Trienna le is worth a read. (Click on
September Newsletter.)
Megan Puis' exhibition at the Tokonoma Fine Art
Gallery and Green Tea House in Mudgeeraba,
1 B August to 13 September, was well received
by those who were lucky enough to see her
thrilling combination of raku and porcelain clay
pieces. September was also busy w ith the Swell
Sculptural Festival at Currumbin on the Gold
Coast and the Maleny Teapot Show at Maleny
on the Sunshine Coast. It should be a wonderful
few days at Alexandra Headland for the Spring
Fever 2009 event in October, with Jim Robison
(UK), Fleur Schell (WA), Vipoo Srivilasa (VIC ),
Shannon Garson (OLD) and Ian Jones (NSW)
imparting their knowledge and entertaining the
partici pants. More in the next issue.
From Sarah Sheppard of Mudlarks: In June,
the AMPS Group (Art Mosaic and Pottery),
part of the Ca loundra Art Centre Association,
organised three days of tra ining with paperclay
legend Graham Hay from WA. Members from
Caloundra participated, however participants
also came from Noosa, Brisbane and beyond
- including one who joined us from North OLD .
The workshop included demonstrations, as well
as a lot of hands on work, opening our eyes to
the wide world of paperclay. Throw out your
standard clay building and firing rules and 'test
the boundaries' rang clear and strong for all in
attendance.
