the distractions of everyday pressures. Spending days working with clay full-time resulted in new ideas
for me to explore. I completed a series of beakers, wall pieces and a set of large sculptural forms all
developing as a result of my ongoing interest in the evolution of form and presence of the 'multiple' in
nature.
Art and life became one - in perfect balance.
As a final part of our stay, Nurdian and I exhibited our work together in Shigaraki at the Centre's
gallery space and 'gallery deux poissons' in Tokyo. The exhibitions, entitled No Where Men were a
unique experience as the two of us worked to show how we had learnt from our t ime together.
On my return from Japan I was invited to curate an exh ibition of my ceramic works and those of my
five fellow JENESYS grant recipients. It also included six emerging young Japanese ceramicists I had met
during my reSidency at Shigaraki: Tetsuya Ishiyama, Yuji Kitamoto, Noriyuki Furutani, Kyoko Uchida,
Kaoru Taniuchi and Tomoko Izaki.
The exhibit ion, entitled New friends, art and adventure: A Ceramic Art Exhibition, was at the
Japan Foundation Gallery in Sydney from 16-31 July 2009.
