Profile Working Fire Jo Mcintyre responds to an exhibition by three Tasmanian wood-fire practitioners Ben Richardson, Fofiage Vase, Boulder Series. 2004; unglazed wood-fired stoneware; h.17ern, w.18cm, d.16cm photo: utte Schulze In June 2009, Carnegie Gallery in Hobart presented Working Fire, an exhibition of uncommon distinction, diversity and technical excellence. Coordinated by f irst-time curator, Ben Richardson, it was testimony to his artistry, imagination and professionalism. Participants in the exhibition were Neil Hoffmann, 8en Richardson and Michael Stephan, all of whom use the technique of wood-firing. Complementing the work on show was Richardson's innovative use of projected video, which provided an invaluable and enlightening insight into making and firing. The video was skilfully filmed and edited by Glen Dunn. Working Fire resembled a stage set with work grouped on wall plinths along two sides and in the centre of the specially darkened, grey gallery interior. Dramatic lighting enhanced the theatrical effect, casting intriguing silhouettes and shadows. Meanwhile, Dunn's superb video detailing Richardson's THE IOURNAL OF AUSTRALIAN CERAMICS NOVEMBER 2009 17
