HELLO EVERY-
ONE.
Another beautiful
September has
passed. How lucky to
have the incredible warm temperatures
right into Thanksgiving.
I hope you satisfied your turkey
and pumpkin cravings at least
until Christmas .
Well, October saw all the canoes,
golf clubs and walking shoes
packed away and we started
bringing out the ice skates and
skis, ready to enjoy the Canadian
winter. The Golf Group has a terrific
tradition---they put a 'toonie'
jar at their sign-in table every
Monday and golfers add to the jar
over the golf season from May to
September. At the end of the Golf
season, the donations are added
up and the amount is given to a
local charity. For the past few
years, it's been Hospice...well
done GOLFERS. I'm going to ask
the organizers of the Golf Group,
Wayne, Ken, Ted, to write a little
summary of a typical Golf season,
courses they play and their
'year end social' where Joan
Charlebois sings and entertains a
very appreciative room of 250+
Golfers. BTW, the Golf Group is
in need of 'Volunteers' to help
with a variety of tasks. You don't
have to be a Golfer to help the
Group. Contact Wayne Vokey for

On October 2nd & 3rd, Wendi
Hake (GWSA Financial Administrator)
and I attended a very intense
2-day Leadership training
course sponsored and completely
funded by the Canadian Active
Aging Association in Bowmanville.
The focus was on 'learning
styles' that change as we age. It's
crucial we keep using our brain
power as we get older and every
day we should strive to learn
something new. We'll be offering
some stimulating but simple and
fun learning sessions in the
spring. There's a picture of our
group in this issue representing
Senior Centres across Ontario. It
was exhilarating being a student
again sharing ideas and using the
Peer Learning model.
October 12th was the 'Mayor's
Event for World Mental Focus on
SENIORS", co-sponsored by
your GWSA and the Canadian
Mental Health Association along
with City staff. The speakers,
GWSA Ross Knechtel and Jody
Weiler, were excellent. Ross
shared his personal story of living
with mental health issues for
most of his life and the strategies
he has used to attain positive
mental health. Jody clarified
some of the common myths about
mental health and aging. We had
20 local agencies that support
mental health care, including
Hope House and Welcome In
Drop-In Centre. The event was a
great success and if you weren't
able to attend but would like
more information, please contact
Maryanne Wilford at the front
counter.
October 25th. Gatekeeper
Training, 9am-12pm. I spoke
about this 'free' program last
month. I hope you were able to
attend but if not you can contact
Manon Germain about the next
session. Gatekeeper shows us
how we can identify and assist
Seniors who might be experiencing
ELDER ABUSE. Contact:
