for drawing accurately will
be introduced with still life and
people as the main subject matter

Beginner Pastels
This course is designed to follow
Fundamentals of Drawing. We will
work from still life and life subjects
as we do in Fundamentals, but with
the additional element of colour
included. Using colour wheels, we
will develop an understanding of
colour theory and how it applies to
our art practice. We learn about the
different types of pastels, both hard
and soft, types of paper surfaces,

and the many ways to apply the
pastels. Terms like layering,
feathering, scumbling, and wet
brushing will be explained and tried
out in this course. It is
recommended that you have the
Fundamentals of Drawing to take
this course.

Portrait Drawing and Painting
This class is structured to develop
and nurture the student's aesthetic
vision concerning painting
portraits. Students will learn basic
structure and proportions of cranial
and facial parts of a head and the
first steps in art of painting portrait.
They will learn to incorporate light,
shadow (tone) and colour to make
portraits alive. Students will also
paint their self-portraits. The selfportraits
will employ subjective
approach. Students will be
encouraged to value not only
resemblance but also an expressive
content. The class is open to both
methods: working from a model
and photographs.
