ENTREPRENEUR
WHAT DOES INVESTING
IN YOURSELF MEAN
TO YOU?
Spending time and money
pursuing interests that will
improve your quality of life,
whether it’s upskilling yourself
professionally or taking a class
that will help you appreciate the
things you enjoy even more.
MOST RECENT PURCHASE
I splurged at Le Clos yesterday
on a magnum of Pol Roger
champagne, a magnum of
Bordeaux from Chateau
Potensac and a bottle of Domain
J.A. Ferret Pouilly-Fuisse.
ONE THING MOST
PEOPLE DON’T KNOW
I have Ojibway heritage
and a forklift operating license.
THE BEST GRAPE REGION?
That’s like asking a mother to tell
which of her kids is her favourite.
I try to drink different wines all
the time to keep my palate
sharp, but my preferred regions
are the ones that I have been to,
and have special memories of. I
love Central Otago, New
Zealand, where I lived for about
six months snowboarding,
working in a lakeside fine-dining
restaurant, knocking back great
Pinot Noir and refreshing white
wines, and staring at some of the
most picturesque landscapes I’ve
ever seen. I also love Margaret
River where I lived working in a
cellar door and in a few
restaurants. I spent my free time
cellar door hopping, jogging
enjoying seeing kangaroos (and
gorgeous surfer guys) in their
natural habitat.
MORNING ROUTINE
I get up with my ‘baby alarm’ around 6am, check
social media, make a coffee and hang out with
my daughter for a few hours before getting
ready for work.
TYPICAL WORK DAY
Never the same! Some days are filled with
coordinating tastings for private clients and
public tastings, and those have been frequent
recently, as I’ve become an approved
provider of WSET (Wine & Spirit Education
Trust) courses and qualifications. Some days
are spent meeting with various partners,
whether that’s venues that want to host our
tastings or brands that want to collaborate
with us. On the day of a tasting, I will brush up
on the lesson I will deliver, follow up with
RSVPs, pack up whatever aids are needed,
head to the venue early to set up, teach a
wine lesson and schmooze.
HOW DID YOU GET HERE?
I have pretty much always worked in wine or
hospitality. Prior to launching The Tasting
Class I was a beer sommelier at a high-end
Belgian restaurant in Dubai, and before that I
worked at Decanter magazine helping them
run the world’s largest wine competition.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE
Find something
you love doing and
you’ll never work a
day in your life
THE BEST DHS1,000 YOU
HAVE EVER SPENT?
It was probably a contribution to
the airline ticket from my home
in Ontario, Canada, to Banff,
Alberta, Canada, which is where
I started learning about wine,
and where I met my husband.
TRAVEL FOR A MEAL…
Years ago, my husband and I
booked a round the world
ticket. While in Mendoza,
Argentina, I was introduced to a
black sausage called morcilla.
Don’t Google what it’s made
from, just eat it if you ever get
the chance. I’ve struggled to
find it since leaving, so if I got
the chance, I would head back
to the winery I used to work at
there, and tuck into a full Asado
between the vines – like old
times – with lots of morcilla and
Malbec. I arrived in Argentina in
skinny jeans and left in stretchy
pants – I regret nothing.
DUBAI HOTSPOTS
Call me biased but the best one
is definitely the Wine and Cheese
Pairing Class that Jones The
Grocer, Dusit Thani, runs with
The Tasting Class every month.
High quality cheese, classic wine
styles perfectly matched and a
lesson on what’s so special about
both the wine and the cheese.
FooDiva (Samantha Wood)
keeps us up to date with the
latest and greatest places to enjoy
fine-dining when we accompany
her as the resident sommelier on
the Dine Around Dubai Dinner
Experiences she runs. Peyote and
Zahira are two of the latest greats
I’ve enjoyed immensely. A classic
go-to that I can always count
on for consistent quality and a
welcoming, buzzy atmosphere
is BOCA.
