You Can Help to Make a Difference and<br />
Make Your Community a Better Place to Live<br />
Remember the Protest Walk back in January?<br />
Our community came together with one voice?<br />
We need that voice on a permanent basis, to<br />
have a say in <strong>Bamford</strong>s Future.<br />
In <strong>Norden</strong>, for example, which is a similar size to us, they<br />
have come together to form Community, Social and Volunteer<br />
Groups which allows them to have a say in what happens<br />
in their community. As a result, they have a park, gardens,<br />
landscaping, allotments, play areas, community playing fields,<br />
library, and a school doubling as a Community Centre offering<br />
varied activities. They hold an annual carnival, Christmas<br />
festivities, and village amenities to be proud of, most of which<br />
are Community led.<br />
In <strong>Bamford</strong> we have mainly residential properties, which have<br />
been developer led across every spare piece of green land,<br />
with absolute minimal community facilities.<br />
It feels like we have been sleepwalking in <strong>Bamford</strong> for the last<br />
40 years, the proposed development on our precious Green<br />
Belt was a wake-up call. No matter what the outcome of this<br />
issue, (and we’ve now got to wait till next summer to find out)<br />
it’s fairly certain that things are not going to remain the same<br />
for the next 40 years. We need a combined community voice<br />
so we have a say in the future of our village, and bring a real<br />
community spirit to <strong>Bamford</strong>, to do this we need to act now.<br />
To do this we want to set up a community lead GROUP and<br />
need YOU to get involved.<br />
We are forming a group called Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong>. That will<br />
provide a central hub for activities within our community, a<br />
sort of ‘umbrella’ group, made up of a number of different<br />
community groups bringing our community together. We need<br />
to recapture on a permanent basis that real community spirit<br />
we experienced on the protest walk back in January.<br />
Ambitious? Absolutely, but recent events show we can really<br />
come together and we must act.<br />
We are looking for a number of volunteers to help plan and<br />
organise seasonal events on the village green.<br />
To get the ball rolling, we are kicking things off with a<br />
Halloween themed fete on Saturday the 28th of October<br />
<strong>2017</strong> from 2pm until 4pm. This will take place on the Village<br />
Green opposite Tesco’s, we want this to be a catalyst to<br />
organise a number of scheduled events throughout the year.<br />
To make this a success <strong>Bamford</strong> needs YOUR support. There<br />
will be lots of fun to be had and many prizes to be won with a<br />
dog fancy dress competition and show, pumpkin competition,<br />
kids haunted wood, face painting and cake competition.<br />
Please don’t just think it’s a good idea, but ‘they’ will do it. You<br />
are ‘they’, and even if you don’t want to be physically involved,<br />
maybe you can participate in other ways, e.g. sponsoring<br />
events or prizes if you own a small business, providing ideas or<br />
marketing the events through leaflet deliveries.<br />
We have appointed a treasurer and we will be setting up a<br />
bank account and registering the group. Any funds raised<br />
through events or donations will be used to re-invest in our<br />
community whether this be future events or improving the<br />
area, with some initial ideas to invest in making the Green<br />
opposite Tesco’s into a useable community space.<br />

3 year project for<br />
DENEHURST PARK<br />
Edenfield Rd, Rochdale<br />
There is currently a 3 year project underway to transform Denehurst Park into a green open space for all.<br />
The project includes improving the drainage in the park, reinstating the paving around formal gardens<br />
and Denehurst House, creating new paths around the park, creation of new play area and other various<br />
landscaping works.<br />
Established in 2014 the Friends of Denehurst Park is a group dedicated to restoring the original<br />
features of the park and developing the park as a community resource for all.<br />
The group is run by an elected committee of Volunteers and is open to anyone<br />
who wants to help the park.<br />
Denehurst House and the surrounding grounds were donated to the town in<br />
1932 by Samuel Turner in memory of his late father Alderman Robert Turner<br />
(1848 - 1931), one of the founders of Turner Brothers Asbestos Ltd. The Park<br />
took its name from Denehurst Farm which previously occupied the site of the<br />
house. The building has been used as offices for a variety of council departments<br />
since it was donated to the town.<br />
Denehurst Cemetery was built on part of the park to meet the demands for<br />
additional burial space in the town and was officially opened in 2015. In addition,<br />
Rochdale Council agreed that a sum of money was to be spent on improvements<br />
in the rest of the park.<br />
The new paths around the park are 1.5m wide, two access ramps have been<br />
installed into the sunken lawn (previously only accessible via steps). There is a<br />
play area planned to be created over the next year which will include many<br />
inclusive pieces of play equipment.<br />
The Park has been a part of Rochdale in Bloom for the last two years, with the<br />
herbaceous border featuring heavily and this was praised by the Britain in Bloom<br />
judges. Much work is needed to keep the beds in pristine condition all year<br />
round as the old beds were stripped out and replanted. Volunteers were (and<br />
still are) the driving force behind the restoration of this historic feature and are a<br />
beautiful sight for anyone wanting to visit the park.<br />
Other landscaping features soon to be in the park will include a Victorian style<br />
stumpery in the formal area of the park and an innovative planting scheme<br />
around a fallen gargoyle tree which has been planted up by Redwood<br />
School students.<br />

Questionnaire Results<br />
At our August community event we revealed the results of our community<br />
questionnaire. Here’s what the voice of our community told us:<br />
Built Heritage:<br />
• Conservation areas, their settings, listed buildings and heritage features should receive<br />
strong protection.<br />
• Key heritage features should be protected, promoted and enhanced, e.g. the Cotton<br />
Famine Road.<br />
Built Development:<br />
• New development should be limited to that which is appropriate in the Green Belt.<br />
• New development should satisfy high standards of design to ensure local character<br />
and identity are retained.<br />
• Extensions, alterations and conversions should be supported provided that they<br />
respect local character and heritage.<br />
• Redundant and disused buildings should be brought back into use.<br />
Green Spaces and Environment:<br />
• Key open spaces should be identified for protection and improvement.<br />
• Local landscape quality and character should be protected and improved.<br />
• Areas of nature conservation should be strongly protected and new areas established.<br />
• Trees and hedgerows should be protected.<br />
• Renewable or alternative energy should be encouraged provided it is of an appropriate<br />
scale and type and does not harm the landscape and heritage features.<br />
Countryside Management and Farming:<br />
• Rural occupations should be supported.<br />
• Farm diversification should be supported, especially where it provides recreational<br />
opportunities, better land management, re-use of rural buildings etc.<br />

Recreation:<br />
• Key routes for walking, cycling and riding .e.g. the Mary Townley<br />
Loop, and access to them should be developed, promoted<br />
and improved.<br />
• Links between attractions should be improved and promoted<br />
(e.g. Healey Dell).<br />
• Recreational activities which detract from environmental quality<br />
or the local landscape should be discouraged.<br />
• Equestrian activities and facilities of an appropriate scale should be supported.<br />
Accessibility:<br />
• Better visitor facilities, like parking, are required.<br />
• Traffic calming on Rooley Moor Road, and improvements to roads, lanes, and footpaths<br />
are needed.<br />
• Footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways need improvement and their use by those with<br />
impaired mobility increased.<br />
• Signage and interpretation information needs to be improved.<br />
• Conflicts between cyclists, horse riders, walkers and vehicular traffic should be addressed.<br />
Visitors:<br />
• Countryside visitor facilities should be improved, e.g. signage, interpretation, parking etc.<br />
• Low key, small scale overnight accommodation would be appropriate.<br />
• Opportunities to promote interest in local heritage, rural skills, nature appreciation<br />
should be taken.<br />
These results are now being used to define a<br />
neighbourhood planning policy for our area for<br />
the next 20 years. We hope to present a draft plan for<br />
you and the council to consider by the<br />
end of this year.<br />

G.H. ELLIOTT<br />
Apart from the greatest of the<br />
entertainers of the mid to late<br />
19th century such as Marie Lloyd,<br />
George Robey and Dan Leno, many<br />
of the old stars of Music Hall are,<br />
sadly, largely forgotten. Similarly,<br />
the generation that followed and<br />
took Music Hall acts onto the variety<br />
and vaudeville stages have been lost<br />
to the mists of time. One, however,<br />
who is remembered by many and<br />
made his way to national fame,<br />
came from Rochdale.<br />
George Henry Elliott, known as<br />
G H Elliott, was born on Blackwater<br />
Street in Rochdale in <strong>Nov</strong>ember 1882.<br />
His parents were both stage<br />
entertainers and brought George into<br />
the same profession as a young boy.<br />
However, the family didn’t stay in their<br />
home town for long after their son’s<br />
birth, moving to the United States in<br />
1886 where George was launched into<br />
theatres, playing juvenile parts such as<br />
the title role in ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy.’<br />
But it was when he joined the<br />
Primrose and West Minstrels which<br />
toured America in the late nineteenth<br />
century that George’s stage persona<br />
was established and would make him<br />
a star at home and abroad. Black-face<br />
minstrel groups, although<br />
understandably reviled these days,<br />
gained enormous popularity in those<br />
early days on both sides of the Atlantic,<br />
providing both a distinctive form of<br />
entertainment and a stage school in<br />
which young entertainers such as<br />
G H Elliott were taught their craft.<br />
At the age of 19 in 1901 Elliott returned<br />
to Britain and took the Music Hall by<br />
storm, quickly rising to the top of the<br />
bill with his song and dance routines.<br />
Taking as his model the famous<br />
American entertainer Eugene Stratton,<br />
he performed many of Stratton’s songs<br />
and had a relative ‘hit’ for those days<br />
with ‘Lily of Laguna’ which he sang as<br />
a tribute to Stratton himself. On stage<br />
he presented himself as a man of elegance<br />
and sophistication, wearing<br />
a white top hat and tails, white shoes<br />
and carrying a white cane.<br />
Through his act, G H Elliott went on<br />
to win national popularity and a great<br />
many copies of sheet music were sold<br />
of ‘Idaho’, ‘I Used to Sigh for the Silvery<br />
Moon,’ ‘Little Dolly Daydream’ and ‘Sue,<br />
Sue, Sue’ along with recordings of the<br />
same songs. Elliott appeared in the film<br />
‘Music Hall’ (1934) and could be seen<br />
on a number of early television variety<br />
shows. In later life he was the subject<br />
of the TV programme ‘This is Your Life’<br />
in 1957 and as a mark of his longevity<br />
in show business lasting over 60 years<br />
appeared in three Royal Command<br />
Performances in 1925, 1948 and 1958<br />
(at the age of 76). Over a long career he<br />
made over 100 records, the first being on<br />
a wax cylinder !<br />

As to his private life, Elliott married<br />
twice, his first wife Emily Hayes dying<br />
in 1940, his second, Florence May<br />
Street, he met when she was working<br />
as an acrobat on the variety stage as a<br />
member of the Martinez Troupe.<br />
On retirement, G H Elliott moved to<br />
Rottingdean in East Sussex and named<br />
his cottage there ‘Silvery Moon’ after<br />
one of his most famous songs. He died<br />
in 1962 and is buried at St Margaret’s<br />
Church Rottingdean withtheatre<br />
curtains carved on his gravestone<br />
between which sit the words ‘The last<br />
curtain call for G H Elliott.’<br />

YORKSHIRE PARKIN<br />
Ingredients<br />
60g stem ginger, chopped- optional<br />
155ml milk<br />
2 tsps bicarbonate of soda<br />
185g golden syrup<br />
60g black treacle<br />
90g soft brown sugar<br />
250g butter or margarine<br />
250g medium oatmeal<br />
250g plain flour<br />
2 tsps ground ginger<br />
Oven 160°c / gas 4<br />
Method<br />
1. Grease and line a 20cm square tin with<br />
greaseproof paper<br />
2. Measure milk into a jug and add bicarbonate<br />
of soda, stir well to dissolve<br />
3. Put golden syrup, black treacle, sugar and<br />
margarine into a pan and heat gently to melt<br />
margarine and dissolve sugar<br />
4. Remove pan from heat and stir in flour, oatmeal,<br />
gingers and milk, stir well to blend together<br />
5. Pour mixture into prepared tin and bake in<br />
centre of oven for 1 hour or until firm to touch<br />
6. Allow the cake to cool completely in the tin; the<br />
cake might sink slightly in the middle. Keep in<br />
an airtight tin for up to a month, it goes softer<br />
with keeping.<br />

YOUR LOCAL POLICE FORCE<br />
The community policing team for <strong>Norden</strong>, <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
& Castleton wish to inform residents as we enter the<br />
longer nights about the elevated risk of burglary.<br />
While the risk of being a victim of burglary is low, as<br />
autumn nights draw in there is a notable seasonal<br />
increase in the number of burglary offences that<br />
occur and we wish to provide basic home security<br />
advice to enable residents to target harden their<br />
homes. If you have previously been a victim of<br />
burglary, statistically, you are at higher risk of being<br />
a victim a 2nd time if you don’t target harden your<br />
property.<br />
AROUND YOUR HOME<br />
Make sure all your windows, doors, side gates and<br />
outbuildings are securely locked.<br />
Ensure your burglar alarm and CCTV systems are in<br />
good working order and switched on.<br />
Leave some lights switched on whenever you go<br />
out in the evening and overnight while you are in<br />
bed. Light timers are a great way to make it look like<br />
someone is present in the address.<br />
Let your neighbours know if you’re going to be out,<br />
so they can keep an eye on your property.<br />
EXTERNAL DOORS AND WINDOWS<br />
Locks depend on the quality of wood in the door and<br />
frame. Consider getting a builder or joiner to secure<br />
the door frame to the brickwork before fitting any<br />
extra locks.<br />
Mortise locks add extra protection to your doors.<br />
Choose locks that conform to British Standards<br />
(BS3621) - or one that has at least five levers.<br />
Check the door is thick enough to accept the lock<br />
and keep its strength. Speak to a qualified locksmith<br />
for advice.<br />
Mortise bolts are useful, but not suitable on doors<br />
you regularly use to leave your house.<br />
Patio doors can be protected by fitting<br />
purpose-made locks or a security bar. Talk to a<br />
locksmith for advice.<br />
French windows: the lock securing one door into<br />
the other is only as strong as the door. Fit mortise<br />
bolts to the top and bottom of each opening door.<br />
Bolts should be fitted to go into the frame - not the<br />
other door.<br />
Transparent window film on large glass doors offers<br />
and additional layer of protection making entry<br />
harder if the glass is smashed.<br />
Window locks that pull the window into the frame<br />
with a key are normally stronger.<br />
Double glazing: check that it’s not just the handle<br />
that stops a window from opening. You should need<br />
a key to unlock the window. Look for the following<br />
British Standards when choosing double glazing:<br />
BS 7950 (security performance); BS 7412 (window<br />
performance).<br />
WINDOW SHOCK ALARMS<br />
Window Shock Alarms are low cost devices that<br />
attach to windows or glass and sound on vibration<br />
which is usually enough to deter potential burglars.<br />
PROTECTING YOUR CARS<br />
Whenever you leave your vehicle, make sure its<br />
doors, windows, boot and sunroof are secure.<br />
Physically check the doors have locked after you<br />
have used a remote fob.<br />
If you have one always lock your car away in a<br />
garage.<br />
Do not leave valuables in your car such as<br />
sunglasses, wallets, handbags etc.<br />
Make sure your car keys are not within view or reach<br />
of the letterbox. Hook and cane burglars have taken<br />
keys for vehicles without causing any damage.<br />

Keeping an eye out for each other is the best way to<br />
prevent crime and homewatch schemes are an easy<br />
way to share information to keep your community<br />
safe.<br />

Putting on the Ritz<br />
AT THE BRIDGE INN<br />
A ladies day cocktail party held at THE BRIGE INN, <strong>Norden</strong> has raised a massive £1940.00 for Macmillan<br />
Cancer Support. The event which was held on Saturday 16th September was a variation of Macmillans<br />
own coffee morning campaign, and was the brainchild of pub regular Susan Clegg.<br />
Dozens of ladies attended, dressed in ‘posh frocks and fascinators’. They were<br />
treated to a Champagne reception, and a range of free cocktails were on offer.<br />
Simon Law of THE BRIDGE INN said ‘It was a wonderful afternoon and all of<br />
the ladies had a marvellous time. The generosity of all who attended was quite<br />
overwhelming’.<br />
There was a grand raffle with dozens of great prizes. Simon added ‘it was<br />
the kindness of all of the local people and business’ who donated prizes and<br />
supported the event, and the immense hard work of my staff and regulars<br />
which made this such an outstanding success’.<br />
The original target for the event was to raise £800.00.<br />
