A Strong Voice for 


Councillor Neil Butterworth continues to work hard for you, 

every day, here are some of his recent achievements:- 

• A road safety speed survey has been carried 

out on Kiln Lane, the recommendation from our 

highways department will be considered at the 

next funding meeting of Pennines Township on 

the 18th October. 

• I have arranged a private meeting with TfGM to 

look at developing a new type of integrated bus/ 

tram/train service. I am keeping the pressure on. 

• Green belt protection remains a major issue and 

conversations with Oldham Council continue. 

• Finally, after many requests from me, some of 

the gullies have been cleaned out at the bottom 

of Kiln Lane and during the recent heavy rain it 

appears to have worked! Things seem to have 

improved, I will keep watching. 

• £5000 Township Grant has been awarded to 

Ellenroad Engine House to maintain their historic 

roof. 

• £7000 Township Grant awarded to Milnrow 

Band for them to attend the national finals

Can you remember your Divi Number? 

I was having a conversation, with my 25 year old son this week and the conversation involved memory, 

so I related the story of my father, who like many people of his generation could always remember his 

army number and his dividend number for the Co-Op. I actually said he could remember his Divi Number. 

What’s a Divi Number…? I hear most people under 60 shout, as he did. 

So here we go with a quick and potted history of your local Pioneers and how they created the middle 

class in Britain today. 

The Pioneers were a group of working class people who believed that there had to be a better wayfor 

all workers to buy their food and clothing, rather than the exploitative ways in place at the time. Some 

workers were forced to buy their food from company shops at prices set by their employers, or exploited 

by greedy shopkeepers. They felt that this was grossly unfair to the masses of the late 19th century. 

So, in the 1830’s, the Pioneers of Rochdale began banding together so that they could provide food and 

clothing for ordinary working class people and in addition, give them something back, as a dividend for 

their patronage. And so, the cooperative movement started in our locality, Rochdale over a hundred and 

fifty years ago. 

It paid a dividend, twice a year on the profits it had made during that period. So, due to bulk buying and 

the re-distribution of those profits to Co-Op members, they managed to get their standard of living a 

little bit higher than non-members of the society. This money was generally spent on clothing that the 

Co-Op also provided. 

Thus this new-found wealth took a great many people out of their Class “station” as poor and started to 

create a class of people who could afford that little bit extra. The Middle Class. 

Locally in Milnrow, Newhey and Ogden the Co-Op movement was prevalent. Who can remember Lane 

Bottom Stores in Ogden, a Co-Op at the bottom of Huddersfield Road Newhey, and at least three Co-Ops 

in Milnrow? 

The idea of Co-operation grew and became a global phenomenon and we now have Co-Op’s as far and 

wide as North Korea, Canada, USA and Turkey; co-operation and working together has been the key to 

moving society forward, and it all started in Rochdale. 

So the next time you say to any 25 year old, “if you fell out of the Co-Op you would fall in the Divi” you 

can explain exactly what you mean! 

Interestingly, the Co-Operative Party is celebrating its 100th 

anniversary this year and events have and are taking place 

all over the Borough. Also, why not try a historical 

“cooperative“ walk around Milnrow, Newhey and up to 

Ogden, Touchstones has a leaflet and walk you can follow. 

Alternatively your local Milnrow Library has lots on the 

Co-Op movement, especially the Rochdale Pioneers.

and Talk Group 

The Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group meet every 

Monday morning, leaving out at 10.00am on walks 

around the local countryside. There are 2 levels of 

walks, a slower walk lasting 60 mins grade 2, or a 

longer walk taking 90 mins grade 3. 

They are suitable for people wishing to increase 

their activity level, meet socially and make new 

friends. The walks are free and lead by volunteer 

walk leaders. After the walks the group returns to the 

library for refreshments and a friendly chat. Please 

make sure you have suitable outdoor walking shoes

A MONTHLY UPDATE FROM YOUR LIB DEM FOCUS TEAM 

Local Champ Chosen 

Dave Bamford selected to stand 

for Liberal Democrats 

Activist Dave Bamford has been chosen to stand for the 

Liberal Democrats in Milnrow & Newhey at the local 

election next May. Dave will be known to many people 

in the villages having been the landlord of both the 

Freemasons and Back Waggon pubs. He also has a track 

record of community activism being involved in Milnrow 

& District Carnival, Milnrow farmers markets, the 10,000 

trees project and local football and sports teams. 

Recently, Dave has raised £1000s of pounds for local 

good causes through music, quiz and boxing events. 

It will come as no surprise that Dave is involved in 

boxing as he is in fact the great grandson of one of 

Rochdale’s most successful sportsmen, the boxer Jock 

McAvoy. 

Councillor Andy Kelly said ”It’s great to have Dave on the 

team. He has lived in Milnrow and Newhey since he was 

a little lad, and most people know him and how hard he 

works for the local community. He’s not afraid to roll his 

sleeves up and get stuck in to make things better for the 

villages. I’m hoping he will join Councillor Irene 

Davidson and myself in representing the ward on 

Rochdale Council.” 

The council is made up of 60 councillors - 3 per 

ward - who serve for a period of 4 years each. 

“He will make a great member of the team and people 

will feel really comfortable in having him represent 

them” added Councillor Davidson. “Dave’s got a track 

record of organising and delivering events and solving 

problems in the local area. He campaigned for some 

alley gates to be installed on Cornfield Street and got the council and RBH to work 

together to solve the problem. He really gets things done.” 

“I really want to make a difference for the villages. Newhey, Milnrow and Ogden are 

brilliant places to live.” added Dave, “I want residents to get the best possible service 

from their council as well as looking for new opportunities for the villages to host 

events, fundraisers and heritage programmes. I feel so strongly linked to the history of 

the area and I want to create a better future”

Who was Jock McAvoy? 

Joseph Bamford, more widely known by his ring name 

Jock McAvoy, was a British boxer who began his career 

in Rochdale, making his professional debut in 1927. 

Born in Burnley in 1908, but discovered, trained and 

managed by Joseph Tolley at Tolley’s famous Rochdale 

Boxing Club, McAvoy swiftly became renowned as 

the Rochdale Thunderbolt due to his reputation as an 

incredibly tough competitor. 

Training for his matches at Hollingworth Lake, McAvoy 

was said to soften his opponents up with punishing 

body blows before acquainting them with the canvas 

floor of the ring, imitating the style of his idol, famous 

heavyweight ex-champion Jack Dempsey. By 1933 McAvoy 

was British Middleweight Champion and, after travelling 

to America in 1935, also knocked out the reigning 

World Middleweight Champion Babe Risko at Madison Square Garden. Even with no 

title to be won, it was McAvoy’s Lancashire pride which was claimed to inspire him. 

Rated as one of the top 10 best British boxers of all time, McAvoy’s fighting career 

lasted 18 years. In that time he was never knocked out or stopped, winning 132 Out of 

a total of 147 recorded contests. Retiring in 1945. Jock McAvoy was described by his idol 

Dempsey as the greatest British fighter he’d seen in 20 years.

G.H. ELLIOTT 

Apart from the greatest of the 

entertainers of the mid to late 

19th century such as Marie Lloyd, 

George Robey and Dan Leno, many 

of the old stars of Music Hall are, 

sadly, largely forgotten. Similarly, 

the generation that followed and 

took Music Hall acts onto the variety 

and vaudeville stages have been lost 

to the mists of time. One, however, 

who is remembered by many and 

made his way to national fame, 

came from Rochdale. 

George Henry Elliott, known as 

G H Elliott, was born on Blackwater 

Street in Rochdale in November 1882. 

His parents were both stage 

entertainers and brought George into 

the same profession as a young boy. 

However, the family didn’t stay in their 

home town for long after their son’s 

birth, moving to the United States in 

1886 where George was launched into 

theatres, playing juvenile parts such as 

the title role in ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy.’ 

But it was when he joined the 

Primrose and West Minstrels which 

toured America in the late nineteenth 

century that George’s stage persona 

was established and would make him 

a star at home and abroad. Black-face 

minstrel groups, although 

understandably reviled these days, 

gained enormous popularity in those 

early days on both sides of the Atlantic, 

providing both a distinctive form of 

entertainment and a stage school in 

which young entertainers such as 

G H Elliott were taught their craft. 

At the age of 19 in 1901 Elliott returned 

to Britain and took the Music Hall by 

storm, quickly rising to the top of the 

bill with his song and dance routines. 

Taking as his model the famous 

American entertainer Eugene Stratton, 

he performed many of Stratton’s songs 

and had a relative ‘hit’ for those days 

with ‘Lily of Laguna’ which he sang as 

a tribute to Stratton himself. On stage 

he presented himself as a man of elegance 

and sophistication, wearing 

a white top hat and tails, white shoes 

and carrying a white cane. 

Through his act, G H Elliott went on 

to win national popularity and a great 

many copies of sheet music were sold 

of ‘Idaho’, ‘I Used to Sigh for the Silvery 

Moon,’ ‘Little Dolly Daydream’ and ‘Sue, 

Sue, Sue’ along with recordings of the 

same songs. Elliott appeared in the film 

‘Music Hall’ (1934) and could be seen 

on a number of early television variety 

shows. In later life he was the subject 

of the TV programme ‘This is Your Life’ 

in 1957 and as a mark of his longevity 

in show business lasting over 60 years 

appeared in three Royal Command 

Performances in 1925, 1948 and 1958 

(at the age of 76). Over a long career he 

made over 100 records, the first being on 

a wax cylinder !

As to his private life, Elliott married 

twice, his first wife Emily Hayes dying 

in 1940, his second, Florence May 

Street, he met when she was working 

as an acrobat on the variety stage as a 

member of the Martinez Troupe. 

On retirement, G H Elliott moved to 

Rottingdean in East Sussex and named 

his cottage there ‘Silvery Moon’ after 

one of his most famous songs. He died 

in 1962 and is buried at St Margaret’s 

Church Rottingdean withtheatre 

curtains carved on his gravestone 

between which sit the words ‘The last 

curtain call for G H Elliott.’

All-In-One Sponge 

This is a quick and easy recipe for a 

Victoria sponge cake; it’s great for a 

beginner or for those with less time 

Ingredients 

3 large eggs 

175g softened butter 

175g caster sugar 

175g self-raising flour 

1.5 teaspoons of baking powder 

Seedless raspberry jam 

2 x 18cm sandwich tins, greased 

and lined 

Method 

Pre-heat the oven to 180°c 

(160°c for fan ovens or gas mark 4) 

Put all the ingredients into a mixing 

bowl and beat until thoroughly blended. 

Divide the mixture evenly between the 

tins and level out. 

Bake for about 25 minutes or until well 

risen and the tops of the cakes spring 

back when lightly pressed with a finger. 

Leave the cakes to cool in the tins for a 

few minutes then turn them out to cool 

on a wire rack, peeling off the 

parchment paper. 

When completely cold, sandwich the 

cakes together with the jam as a filling. 

Sprinkle with caster sugar and 

then serve.

A SHORT NOVEMBER WALK FOR BEGINNERS 

A circular walk around our local countryside is a sure way to improve your general health and 

wellbeing; it’s a good defence against depression and by joining a Walking Group, it is an opportunity 

to meet people and make new friendships. 

Taking the first steps, for a novice walker, need not be at a fast pace or over a long distance. Either on 

your own, or ideally with a companion, take this leisurely stroll which is sure to be thought provoking 

and interesting. 

THE ROUTE 

The walk is two miles long and is considered suitable for people who have not walked much before, 

with some moderate slopes, stiles and uneven surfaces. OS sheet SO81/91 or A to Z Milnrow covers 

the area of the walk. Wear good walking boots or shoes, and clothing to protect you depending upon 

the weather. A walking pole and mobile phone are worth taking. 

Starting out from Milnrow Library, turn left; proceed up Newhey Road, under the Motorway Bridge and 

left into Milnrow Memorial Park. Here are well kept grassed areas, cultivated and wild flower beds and 

deciduous woodland. Take the main path up to the imposing Grade II listed War Memorial with its statue 

of a World War I soldier with fixed bayonet. Rest here for a while in quiet contemplation; it is 100 years 

ago that the Battle of Passchendaele was fought, and November is the month when we pay homage to

Proceed up the path, through the trees with wild bird feeding station, to the perimeter wall, then along 

the single width path that leads to Lower Bradley and St Thomas’ Church. Visit the churchyard, there 

are benches to rest on. Here you will find many graves of local servicemen killed in action. They are 

marked with a flag depicting a Red Poppy. 


Return to Lower Bradley and proceed up Bradley Lane, signposted to Bradley Farm. Prior to the farm 

are two ancient stone water troughs on the left. Beyond the Farmhouse the lane bears left up to a steel 

gate and stile with waymarker sign. Continue over the stile, it can be muddy here, so take care, and 

proceed along the farm track. Within a short distance we get a wide panoramic view of Milnrow, 

Rochdale and Littleborough with the 

hills of Scout Moor in the background 

and the busy M62 motorway in the 

foreground. 

Having absorbed the spectacular view, 

continue along the farm track until it 

bears right; here follow the waymarker 

post direction down left with the field 

fence to your left. Cross over a stile, 

then pass through the foundations of an 

old ruin farm house; over another stile 

and down the hillside to a final stile that 

brings you out onto Newfield Head Lane. 

Go left down the stone sett paved lane, but take great care as 

the stone setts are very slippy when wet. This brings you to the 

motorway underpass where there is some brilliant expressive 

wall art to be seen and admired. Take the road left at Moy Hill, 

down Water Lane to Butterworth Hall, Cleggs Terrace and the 

Waggon Inn (circa 1782). Outside the ‘Back Waggon’ are more 

benches for resting, though it is only a short distance, left, up 

Royds Street and back to Milnrow Library.

If you feel the urge to get out more often for a walk in the local countryside, then come 

along to our weekly Walk and Talk Group. Based at Milnrow Library we meet every Monday 

(except Bank Holidays) from 9.30 am leaving out at 10.00am for 60 to 90 minute walks. It 

is free, and open to people of all ages, and abilities, who wish to gain health benefits from 

walking in a safe and social group and is lead by volunteer walk leaders.
