Kite and the City
I went out with my PURE 10m Gaastra
for a Freestyle session in a breathtaking
scenery.
Apart from mine, there were about
30 other kites, in the foreground the
buildings and the merry-go rounds
of the famous Coney Island and dark
clouds in the background framing the
unmistakable skyline of Manhattan
skyscrapers. And that's when the
adrenaline from a totally new experience
gets you.
The following day we wake up with
the sun. In late September days, with
temperatures hovering around 23-24
degrees the possibility of thermal winds
from South-West cannot be ruled out.
So, we head off to the opposite side of
Rockaway Peninsula which overlooks
the ocean. Besides being the only beach
accessible by subway from the centre
of New York, it hosts a fervent surfer
community. Following the devastation
made by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the
reconstruction of houses and of the
boardwalk contributed to the rebirth of
this community.
Around one o'clock, right on schedule, a
South breeze rises and soon reaches 15-
16 knots, perfect for a wave session with
