Surfboard essentials: a thoughtful guide to the choice of the object of desire
CONSTRUCTION TYPE
There are three basic construction types.
- CLASSIC (i.e.: wave boards)
The core is of polyurethane foam (CLARK FOAM),
polyester resined. There may be different types
of density that determine its weight and robustness.
PROS: Shape precision, limited water absorption
in case of breakage, easy to repair, more
flex.
CONS: Easy to bump (the Clark is polyester
resin coated, much weaker than the epoxy one
with which the polystyrene is resined), high
specific weight (less overall floatation).
RECOMMENDED USE: For those who prefer a
smooth surfing, a pure feeling with the wave.
- LTD - RESIN (i.e.: windsurfs)
The core is polystyrene, epoxy resined. The
making process is longer and more complicated
because it is injected in unshaped moulds
therefore the shaper will have to carve the
shapes out of the blocks. Overall production
costs are higher.
PROS: More robust compared to the Classic
one, lighter (300-400 g compared to the Classic),
best overall performance at high speeds.
CONS: Higher water absorption in case of breakage,
difficult to repair, less precise shapes.
RECOMMENDED USE: For those who love more
control at high speeds.
- WOOD /BAMBOO (the most resistant ones)
The boards are produced in one go, therefore
all the properties and fibres go in the mould
