Deans’ farm
restoration to
be decided

A DECISION will be made on
the restoration of two buildings
connected to the pioneering
Deans’ farming settlement.
The city council will decide on
Thursday whether to approve a
heritage incentive grant of up to
$62,326 for the repair work of two
former farm buildings in Kahu
Rd, near Riccarton Bush.
A city council report says if the
work goes ahead, it will mean
some of the last early brick farm
buildings in Canterbury will be
restored.
The application was made by
the Christchurch Boys’ High
School board of trustees, which
owns the buildings.
So far, the owners have
$1,486,468 available from insurance
and have raised a further
$147,061 for repairs to enable the
building to be reused.
The cost of repairing the buildings
is estimated to be $2,120,000,
which means the owners have to
find $546,395.
The Deans brothers, William
and John, were some of the earliest
European settlers in the city
and the site of their first farm was
at Riccarton Bush.
Young filmmaker on a roll

Christchurch Girls’ High
School student Grace Maguire
recently won the New Zealand
Film Commission Young
Women Filmmaker in the
Outlook for Someday short film
competition.
Her three and a half minute
film is called Wired, a
docudrama about the overuse
of technology by teenagers
– it also won the CGHS film
competition for the second time
last year.
“They [teenagers] are using it
a lot more, not focusing what’s
happening around them . . . we
want them to look up,” she said.
A docudrama is a dramatised
television programme or film
which takes the form of a
serious documentary based on
real events.
The inspiration for it, she said,
came from observing her peers.
“It is just something I have
seen all around me,” she said.
It is not her first film.
In 2015, she won the school
competition with The Transfer,
which was about a teenager who
woke up every day in a different
body.
The 16-year-old filmmaker
said it was a fantastic experience,
one she will definitely repeat.
“I really want to make
more, they are so much fun,
especially when you are creating
things with your friends,” she
said.
The prize package for each
winning film includes a
commitment that the film will
be entered into at least one
international film festival in
2017.
