Work set to finish on university project<br />

THE HEART of the new<br />

engineering precinct at<br />

Canterbury University is set to<br />

be completed in time for the<br />

beginning of the academic year.<br />

The university released a series<br />

of images online showing what<br />

the $144 million redevelopment<br />

of the engineering precinct will<br />

look like.<br />

It first announced the College<br />

of Engineering would be redeveloped<br />

in 2014.<br />

The Core, at the centre of the<br />

renewal will include spaces for<br />

students and staff to socialise,<br />

built-in workstations, a cafe and<br />

flexible seating options.<br />

engineering wing will be ready<br />

for teaching in time for the beginning<br />

of semester 2 this year.<br />

She said the college will<br />

be expecting an increase in<br />

numbers this year with full-time<br />

student role numbers going up<br />

by 20 per cent in the last five<br />

years.<br />

Last year, 3220 domestic and<br />

international students were<br />

enrolled in the college.<br />

Final figures for this year is<br />

not expected to be released until<br />

February or March.<br />

The completion of the precinct,<br />

known as the “Canterbury Engineering<br />

the Future” project is the<br />

first major redevelopment of the<br />

engineering department at the<br />

university in 42 years.<br />

A Canterbury University<br />

spokeswoman said the project<br />

comprises of a renewal of all<br />

engineering facilities.<br />

Meanwhile, students looking<br />

to study chemical and process<br />

engineering will now know<br />

what the new building will<br />

look like. Images were recently<br />

released of the wing completed<br />

last year.<br />

Constructors.<br />

The precinct is based on the<br />

northern side of Ilam along the<br />

Creyke Rd frontage.<br />
