Interview | Physiorelax PHYSIORELAX - NEW AGE STRESS SOLUTIONS Dr. Hani Hasan Founder and CEO, PHYSIORELAX 14 January-February 2018
Interview | Physiorelax The human body is an amazingly adaptable piece of machinery. Restriction of movement in one region of the body can often be compensated for by the development of extra movement in an adjacent region. Unfortunately this excessive movement often leads to an overload of strain on tissues leading to pain and discomfort. Fortunately there are solutions today if you are struggling with a pain that just won’t go away or suffering from an injury through sport, work or accident and to rehabilitate following surgery. In fact, it is common today to find careers that have come to a standstill from stress induced at a corporate job, spinal issues caused by poor posture or an ill-advised fitness program. The work place, the home as well as the sports ground are all common injury grounds. “Injuries can be caused by a combination of those things without necessarily being the only reasons,” says Dr. Hani Hasan, well-known Physiotherapist and Founder of Physiorelax Physiotherapy Medical Centre. “Fatigue and overuse of certain muscles are also significant contributors to an injury, and the thing is all of us are prone to injuries at any moment, and none can claim to be impervious to the challenges that daily life throws at us.” Coping with sports injuries often requires physical rehabilitation. Physical therapy helps people rebuild strength and movement in parts of their body after an injury, besides helping to manage pain and prevent permanent damage and recurring problems. Qualified Physical therapists are trained to help patients recover following an injury. As part of physical therapy, they can teach exercises, stretches, and techniques using specialized equipment to address problems. “Athletes participate in a wide spectrum of sports,” Dr. Hasan says. “Each sport carries its own risk of injury for the athletes. These injuries should be appropriately addressed in order to keep the athlete safe. During games which involve repetitive movements, players have to constantly go through the same motion, putting the same body structures through the same stress.” It is common to develop injuries such as tennis elbow - inflammation or pain on the outside of the upper arm near the elbow; medial golfer’s elbow - inflammation or pain on the inner side of the upper arm near the elbow; or “Tommy John” injury for pitchers, which is an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow, says Dr. Hasan. Physical therapists need to understand the involved and injured structure and the extent of the injury before treating it. Rehabilitation should carefully be evaluated on a daily basis and each phase dictates a different treatment approach which is the physical therapist’s responsibility to accurately diagnose and prescribe treatment. We have created a space that feels spacious and pleasant. With clever interior designing and use of colours, this place gives you the feeling that you can breathe...We treat the psyche; treat the mind before the body. Manual therapy is a hands on technique that involves mobilising and/ or manipulating the joints. It has many therapeutic benefits that can be felt immediately. Increasing the range of motion and reducing pain are just two of the diverse therapeutic effects of Manual Therapy. In addition to injuries to muscles, joints, and bones, concussions are a major concern in sports today says Dr. Hasan. A traumatic brain injury may result in bad headaches, an altered level of alertness, or unconsciousness. It may result when the head hits an object or a moving object strikes the head. Athletes in all sports are at risk of a sports-related concussion, but some contact sports more than others. Physical therapists are an integral part in the multidisciplinary approach to the identification and treatment of these injuries. Athletes can prevent many sports injuries with proper warm-up and stretching, he says. Physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists continue to gain more knowledge in preventing and diagnosing sports injuries. Although some procedures would remain the standards of care, the means to address the injuries could change. “Our physiotherapists provide injury management for all people, of all ages, wanting a fast and effective return to full function. However, if you are unsure whether physiotherapy is right for you and your particular problem, ask to speak to a therapist. He will try to give you an indication of whether physiotherapy will help your condition, but often we will need to fully assess you in order to give accurate advice.” Physiorelax is a top notch Physiotherapy Centre that combines the advantages of the latest technology and equipment with clinical expertise in an ambience of luxury and comfort. Founded by Dr. Hani Hasan with his wife, Fatin Al Alawi, the clinic is a buzzing centre of activity today. Dr. Hasan talks to Reena Abraham and Sultan Sharabaty about the journey. What was the vision behind the formation of Physiorelax Physiotherapy Medical Centre? The concept of this place came out of a need in Bahrain for such services. We lack a true rehab multi service centre. What often happens is that the patient gets some physiotherapy done, feels better and goes home. Then he goes to the Gym and makes the same mistake again and he is back again with the same pain or injury. Without proper consultation before treatment and counselling afterwards, this is likely to happen again and again. Our approach is to take the patient from treatment till he gets back on his feet and then till he gets back to his activity fully. That means we consider bringing a patient back to his activity our responsibility. We may be the only centre that does that. Most places just treat you till you are feeling good and then they leave you to go do whatever you want. In my eyes that is not correct, because there’s a long road and a process before we can be sure he is ready for those lifestyle activities - maybe while he is feeling better, he is not ready for the gym, maybe he is not ready for the sports activity yet. So this was the thinking and the idea behind our concept. January-February 2018 15
