16 Thursday October 5 2017 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Hospital library gets discharged • By Bridget Rutherford THE FUTURE of Christchurch Hospital Volunteer Library is unknown, with no confirmed plans to reopen it. The library used to be on the hospital’s lower ground floor and was run by volunteers. But a review as part of the hospital’s post-earthquake redevelopment determined it was no longer possible to accommodate all services. Hospital general manager Pauline Clark said the average length of a patient’s stay had fallen, while day-long treatments had increased. As a result of higher demand for blood services, the library space will now accommodate blood services within the hospital, Ms Clark said. It is awaiting the results of the Hospital Redevelopment Partnership Group’s master planning process to see whether a library could be accommodated. She said staff had been in regular contact with library volunteers throughout the redevelopment process. ONE OF the city’s most iconic streets may have been largely destroyed during the earthquakes, but the history of High St has been captured in a new cafe. Voom is a recent addition to the High St development opposite the ANZ Centre. And in the corner of the small, express cafe, a large screen flicks through historic photos of the area. “What we’ve done is incorporate the history of High St with photos from the National Library of New Zealand,” regional manager Peter Ward said. Mr Ward said there is a range of amazing photos, but one of the standout shots is a picture of the building on fire from more than 50 years ago. While the cafe champions the past, he said Voom is ready to grow with the regenerating, modern central city. “We’ve got a whole range of customers we’re catering to, as workers, tourists and shoppers all return to the CBD.” He said standing in the cafe and seeing the large number of building projects going on is really invigorating. “It’s only the start,” Mr Ward said. Voom is also one of a few places in the city to offer the famous pies from the Fairlie Bakehouse. “There’s a lot of excitement around having Fairlie on board,” he said. Mandu featured in The Star last month after he made friends with residents of Edith Cavell Lifecare in Sumner. A resident, Denise Brown, wanted to make sure he had a home, so she put out the call for the owner to get in touch. But no-one came forward to claim the ginger tom, so he’s now been adopted by the daughter of 90-year-old Ed Cotter, who was one of his favourite residents at the rest home (hence the name, short for Kathmandu.) Ms Brown said she very pleased Mandu had found a stable home with Jacqui Cotter, who lives in Brighton. “He went off quite happily on Saturday; he’s already been The Star micro-chipped and the vet said he was two-years-old and a lovely cat.” Although some residents were upset to see him go, “one of the cooks cried,” Ms Brown said people were pleased he’d found a place to call home. One where Mr Cotter can go still go and visit.
