Shand’s facelift nearly finished
• By Bridget Rutherford
RESTORATION WORK on the
city’s oldest wooden commercial
building is nearly finished.
Christchurch Heritage Trust
is restoring the historic Shand’s
building, formerly known as
Shand’s Emporium, to its former
glory.
Trust chairwoman Anna
Crighton said the $500,000 project
was “almost finished.”
She said it just needed door
hardware installed, the kitchen
had to be installed, and the carpet
needed to be laid, which was
expected to be done within the
month.
The work had been delayed
due to poor weather and the road
works on Manchester St, which
had made access to the site difficult,
she said.
A small group had a celebration
recently to pay tribute to those
who had helped restore the building,
including the city council,
which put a $172,219 heritage
incentive grant into it, Dulux,
which sponsored the paint, and
Signtech, which did the gold sign
on the window.
“It’s the oldest wooden commercial
building left in the city.
It’s dated right from colonial
times, we just don’t have any left
in the city. It’s got nostalgia,” Dr
Crighton said.
The category one heritage
building was built in 1860 by John
Shand. It used to be owned by Antony
Gough, and sat on Hereford
St.
But Mr Gough sold it to
Christchurch Heritage Trust for
$1 to make way for The Terrace,
and it was moved next to Trinity
Congregational Church on Manchester
St, which the trust was also
restoring.
Dr Crighton said there had
been a lot of interest in leasing the
both the Shand’s building and the
church. She hoped tenants would
be confirmed before Christmas.
“There’s people interested in
taking the whole lot.”
She said the restoration of the
1875 church was on track to finish
in December.
Both buildings are now connected
by an annex, which has
two offices, a kitchen and a toilet.
In Brief
METH LEVELS IN UNITS
Methamphetamine testing
carried out on the city council’s
99 social housing units over
July and August found 15
tested positive. But of those,
only one was not fit to occupy
because the levels were over the
Ministry of Health guidelines.
One contaminated property
was remediated through an
insurer. Currently, there are
11 properties offline due to
contamination, while six have
remediation costs between
$35,000-$50,000, which are
currently pending insurance
company acceptance of claims.
DROP THE BOSS
Thirty two Canterbury bosses
will abseil off Cashel St’s Les
Mills building in the name of
charity tomorrow. They will
compete for the 2017 Drop
Your Boss Trophy, which will
go to the boss that raises the
most money. The aim is to raise
$30,000 to go to the Graeme
Dingle Foundation, which
delivers youth development
programmes. Special guests
include Mike Pero, city
councillor Deon Swiggs,
Tactix player Erikana Pedersen
and Peter Sherwin of Grant
Thornton.
