High calibre bowlers for tournament
YOUTH bowling’s cream of the
crop will hit the Burnside green
tomorrow.
The Burnside club’s under-26
singles tournament runs until
Sunday and features a string of
current and future international
calibre bowlers from New Zealand
and Australia.
The event reinforces the idea
that bowls is a game for all ages.
The playing group ranges in age
from 17 to 25.
At stake is $5000 in prize money,
but more importantly to these
youngsters is the opportunity to
display their talents and skills
in front of Bowls New Zealand’s
national lead coach and selector
Sharon Sims.
The feature of the Burnside
event is having men and women
play on equal terms.
Three previous winners – Sean
Ingham, Broadbeach, Australia,
2013; Tayla Bruce, Canterbury,
REDEMPTION: After losing her crown last year Tayla Bruce will
seek the title for the second time.
2015; and Sheldon Bagrie-
Howley, Southland, 2016 – will
attempt to repeat their past
success.
“Every year it just gets better
and better but the standard of
play is always matched by the
sportsmanship shown and the
way this group of players rekindle
old friendships and make
new ones,” said tournament
convener Kerrie Bruce.
YOUNG GUN: NZ development player Cait Bassett will look to
claim her first U26 title.
Thirteen players in the field
have already represented their
country at development team
level, mainly against Australia.
Bruce, of the Burnside
club, has been selected in the
Blackjacks women’s team for
the transtasman test series
in November, Burnside and
Allenton club member, Bassett,
will play in the development
team’s test series.
