Burnside High School have pulled out of next year’s UC Championship, saying they do not have the depth to compete. The move is surprising. In 2016, Burnside finished ahead of traditional rugby schools St Andrew’s and St Bede’s colleges and won the South Island co-ed schools title. In 2014 and 2015, Burnside won the UC Championship Plate, which is played for between teams that finish from fifth to eighth in the roundrobin. The school has also turned out potential stars in recent times. Last year’s Burnside hooker Perry Karati was named in the New Zealand Secondary School Barbarians team. Burnside captain Cam Russell was named co-winner of the 2016 UC Championship player of the year. Both Karati and Russell were part of the Canterbury under-19 team this year. However, that may not have been the case had they not been exposed to the elite first XV competition. “If I wasn’t playing in the UC Championship, I probably wouldn’t have got the recognition that I did. I think kids may look at changing school because if you’re not in the top competition then you’re not going to get looked at,” said Karati. “The programme was definitely in good shape when I was there and I thought it would continue to stay in good shape.” But after just one poor campaign, Burnside have pulled out of the UC Championship. They recorded just one win, finishing dead last in the competition and regularly had 30-40 points put on them. The lowest point of their campaign was a 7-74 hiding at the hands of Nelson College. Burnside operate a successful international rugby programme. However, under the UC Championship rules they can only field two non-domestic players. The programme has seen a number of its students go on to play international rugby. He was snapped up by NRL side the Canberra Raiders and last month was named Raiders’ national youth competition player of the year. Next year the Burnside first XV will compete in a Saturday metro under-18 competition, allowing them to field an unlimited amount of international players. Canterbury Rugby Football Union chief executive Nathan Godfrey received an email from Burnside assistant principal Matt White last month to indicate the school would be pulling out of the championship. Burnside sport co-ordinator Tracy Taylor said “we just don’t have the depth”. “It’s not much fun getting thrashed by 50 points each week.” With a role of more than 2000, Burnside is the largest school in New Zealand outside of Auckland. Meanwhile, the UC Championship will move to a two-tier competition from 2019. The top tier will be decided by the finishing order of the teams in 2018. Godfrey says the ideal scenario would be a 10-team top tier with the bottom tier being available for new teams to enter and attempt to gain promotion. And in another shock, veteran hooker Issac Luke has been dumped after a poor season for the Warriors. The NZ Herald understands Harris’ absence will be confirmed when the Kiwis 24-man squad is announced today, after struggling to overcome shoulder and foot injuries that dogged him throughout the year. The 25-year-old missed the first two months of the season with a broken foot and was later sidelined with a rotator cuff injury, before returning to play a key part in the Storm’s charge to the finals. However, both injuries got progressively worse and limited Harris’ ability to train each week before he limped into Sunday’s 34-6 grand final win over North Queensland. In his last appearance for Melbourne, the Warriors-bound forward turned in a typically tireless performance at ANZ Stadium and fired out a beautiful 25m pass for Josh Addo-Carr’s second try in the 73rd-minute. In spite of having given his all on his way to winning his first NRL title, Harris’ body is in no condition to get through the sixweek World Cup. He will now focus on recovering in time for his first season at the Warriors. Meanwhile, Luke is believed to have been overlooked, with Kiwis selectors opting to go with youth in the form of impressive 21-year-old Newcastle Knights hooker Danny Levi.
