EDITOR’S LETTER 

Spreading across two continents and more than a dozen 

countries, Americas is indeed a land with huge variety 

in cultures and traditions as well as landscapes. From 

the ice-capped peaks of Canada to the sunny beaches 

of Brazil, from the vast metropolises of United States 

of America to the natural retreats of the Bahamas, this 

region has a lot to offer to the world. Whether you’re 

looking for a laid back vacation by the beach or an 

adventure-filled, adrenaline-fueled trip, you can find it 

all in Americas. 

In this edition, you’ll find a list of hotel and tour 

operator winners along with their profiles like St. Regis 

in the metropolis of New York, unique retreats like 

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas and 

expedition specialists like Alpaca Expeditions in Peru. 

Over the past year, our researchers have strived hard 

and the judges have worked tirelessly to come up with 

our finalists and I would like to take this opportunity to 

thank and congratulate them all for their efforts. As for 

you, our dear readers, I welcome you to read this issue 

of Americas Magazine and wish you a fruitful and blissful

CRITERIA 

Services 

Excellence in Service is an important category, as customer service can often 

be responsible for having guests return year after year. We look for the hotels 

and tour operators that go out of their way to please their guests, those that 

provide a personal level of service and take the time to get to know each visitor 

so that they might anticipate their every need. This can be something as simple 

as a 24-hour concierge desk, a hotel manager who offers a personal greeting 

or a tour guide who is happy to create bespoke private tours – but whatever 

it is, we are always pleased when we encounter staff that have been trained in 

the art of customer satisfaction.

Style & Design 

It is no question that style and design plays a big part in selecting our awards 

shortlist. A guest will form an opinion about a hotel as soon as they arrive so 

it is important to us that all our winners make those first impressions count. 

We’re certainly not partial to a particular period of architecture – but whether 

we’re judging a gothic castle or an environmentally friendly lodge, the criteria 

remains the same. We consider factors such as architectural features, use of 

materials, creation of spaces, décor and the overall feel. We love it when we 

find a hotel that tells a story though its design and construction, or offers a 

design that is sympathetic to the natural surroundings of its location. 

Local Knowlege 

Knowledge of the local area is essential for any organization, be it a hotel or 

a tour operator. The quality of services takes a great hit when the quality of 

this element is not up to the mark. Quite a few of our winners in this category 

are because they have displayed excellent knowledge about the surrounding 

areas. The criteria for a hotel is slightly lenient compared to a tour operator, 

as the latter is expected to have thorough knowledge of the area in order to 

provide good services.

Facilities 

Award-winning guest rooms come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have 

one thing in common – a home-away-from-home feel. The comfort of the 

facilities on offer are of vital importance; we look for luxurious linens, stylish 

bathrooms and a coordinated colour scheme that work together to create 

a cohesive sense of relaxation. Additional touches, such as complimentary 

toiletries, free wi-fi or tea and coffee making facilities are always a bonus in 

making us feel welcome. We’re always impressed to find hotel rooms that 

embrace technology and offer amenities like tablets or smart thermostat 

systems, but this does not always necessarily trump the traditional – four poster 

beds, ornate fireplaces or antique furniture can add a touch of decadence to a 

hotel stay. 

Marketing 

In today’s modern age, a hotel or tour operator cannot rely on word of mouth 

to get their message out into the world. As social media has become a vital 

part of everyday life, we like to see companies that go the extra mile to engage 

with their guests, both past and future. Attractive and informative websites 

and engaging and honest content and what we look for when judging a 

company’s use of marketing; how well they display their services, how up-todate 

their content is, how well they get their brand message across, and, most 

importantly, how well their marketing can tempt us to go and see what they 

have to offer for ourselves.

Diversity 

Diversity is one important aspect that needs to be taken into consideration 

when in the travel and hospitality industry. It is essential to have staff that has 

varying diversity to ensure that the organization can properly connect with 

their guests. Diversity is taken into account in terms of gender, nationality as 

well as languages spoken among other factors. Not only do we take the diversity 

of the staff into account but even that of the facilities and services offered; a 

hotel or tour operator providing a better range of services is preferred over 

those that do not. 

Location 

Location is one of the most important factors, but also one of the most subjective, 

as the ‘ideal’ is very much determined by the type of visitor and the type of 

hotel itself. However, there a few factors we take into consideration when 

determining the winners of location-based awards. The first is convenience; 

that is, hotels that are easy to travel to. Many of our winners in this category 

are in convenient locations, such as adjacent to airports, close to beaches or 

found in the heart of easy-to-navigate cities. We are always impressed when 

hotels go the extra mile to take the hassle out of traveling and offer such 

additional services as airport shuttles or car hire services. However, we’re 

always excited to come across a hotel that is, to use a familiar phrase, off-thebeaten-track. 

A hotel that can offer something a little different, in terms of 

natural surroundings, can make the difference between a good holiday and an 

incredible one.

Customer Reviews 

What better way is there to know about an organization than by getting first 

hand reviews? Customers are the best judges of any service out there as they 

are the ones who experience them and can assess whether they were up to the 

mark or not. Considering reviews from hundreds of customers gives us a fair 

idea about the general pros and cons of any organization and also gives us 

valuable inputs for the other criteria as well. 

Industry Knowledge 

It is of prime importance that an organization has thorough industry 

knowledge. Without knowing the nit-bits of the industry, it is difficult to 

flourish and provide services which are a class apart. Before any organization 

ventures into the industry, it is essential that they know how the industry is 

moving and how they should make changes to their methodologies in order to 

remain relevant and also be a top-performing organization.

1. California State Route 1 

This easy yet exciting route between Dana 

Point and Leggett in California’s Redwood 

country is among the finest roads to drive 

on. Whether it is summer or winter, this road 

will never disappoint you. Some amazing 

sites that you get to see while on this route 

include greater Los Angeles, Santa Monica, 

Malibu and Big Sur. 

When we are talking about road trips, how 

can we forget Route 66? Built way back in 

1926, this route stretches for more than 2400 

miles right from Chicago to Santa Monica. 

This 2-lane highway is old and that’s what 

makes it a unique road to travel on. This is 

one route that has been shown in various 

movies and one you cannot miss. 

3. Highway 61 

Yet another great route to travel on with your 

friends or family, the Highway 61 stretches 

across 1400 miles and is a relatively a straight 

road that permits a very smooth driving experience. 

Connecting New Orleans to Wyoming, 

this route almost follows the course 

of the Mississippi River and gives spectacular 

views of the river nearly throughout the journey. 

A great album to listen to while driving 

on this route would be Bob Dylan’s Highway 

61 Revisited, named after this very road! 

Winding through the barren lands of Nevada, 

Highway 50 has earned this nickname 

thanks to the largely uninhabited region that 

it runs through. The only things that give you 

company on this route are the mountains 

and the pine forest that pass by. What better 

way can there be to discover yourself than 

a long drive on this route all by yourself with 

nothing but nature to give you company? 

The part of the US Route 1 Highway running 

through the Florida Keys is one of the most 

beautiful roads to drive on. Most of this route 

runs parallel to the ocean and gives you 

some spectacular views of the infinite blue. 

This is a sort of an island hopping highway 

where you can go from one key to another 

with Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Atlantic 

Ocean on the other. The most beautiful 

route on this Highway is definitely the 

Seven Mile Bridge which is built entirely over 

water. 

6. Blue Ridge Parkway 

The Blue Ridge Parkway is not only a highway 

but also one of America’s longest linear 

parks. Running for nearly 469 miles, this 

route gives you some spectacular views of 

the Blue Ridge Mountains and links the Shenandoah 

National Park to the great Smoky 

Mountains National Park. This is your chance 

to drive among lush vegetation including 

major trees like Oak, Hickory and Tulip. If 

you’re a nature lover, this is one road trip you 

must not miss.

This 105-mile long road trip route runs through 

the Shenandoah National Park in the Blue 

Ridge Mountains of Virginia. For nature lovers, 

there is no route that can match the 

views of this one. If you’re looking to hike 

through the park, this route gives you access 

to many trails like the Appalachian Trail. 

If you wish to go biking or horseback riding, 

then this is the road for you! The road maybe 

just two lanes wide, but is the best way to 

discover this park. 

8. Route 17 through Monument Valley 

This road passes through some of the most 

magnificent rock formations you’ll ever see 

- The Grand Canyon. A drive through this 

valley will give you some of the most splendid 

views and will always make you crave 

for the route to be longer. The road finally 

curves through the buttes and tabletops on 

the border of Arizona and Utah border. This 

is one route that all adventure junkies must

This is the longest road in the country and 

runs for a staggering distance of 3365 miles 

from Oregon to Boston with a break at the 

Yellowstone National Park. This is one route

Bahamas: 

A Hidden Gem 

Penang is a paradise for all food lovers and due 

to its cultural and ethnic diversity, the food here 

is assorted as well. The popular dishes here are 

mainly from Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Western 

cuisines, many of which have been tweaked and 

fused to create more innovative dishes. You can find 

some of the most authentic dishes by the street here

This tiny group of 700 islands, cays, and 

islets in the Atlantic Ocean near United 

States of America is indeed a paradise on 

earth. The Bahamas remain a part of the 

Commonwealth realm and thrive on tourism 

and finance. The natural beauty of this 

archipelago attract hundreds of thousands of 

tourists from across the world here every year. 

This paradisiacal group of islands is indeed a 

gem hidden from the world which can only 

be discovered on visiting. One of the most 

popular of these is the Paradise Island, which 

is mostly covered by the sprawling estate of 

the 5-star Atlantis Resort. It is also home to one 

of the most famous beaches in the nation, 

Cabbage Beach.

landscape. Every Boxing Day and New Year’s 

Day, the Junkanoo Street Parade happens 

in the capital, Nassau, with people dancing 

to music with funky costumes of Akan origin. 

If historical artefacts interest you, the Pirates 

of Nassau Museum is the place you should 

visit and dive into the city’s history as an 18th 

century pirate base. 

If you’re into diving, no trip to Bahamas can 

be complete without a visit to the Dean’s 

Blue Hole which is the second-deepest 

known salt water blue hole in the world with 

an entrance below the sea level. You can 

plunge to a depth of 202 meters here next to 

Long Island. You’ll also find a replica pirate 

ship here. 

Fancy some fishing? Elbow Cay is the perfect 

place for you. This cay has crystal clear 

waters and you could go snorkeling here or 

even relax and enjoy some fishing! If you’re 

a nature lover, the Lucayan National Park 

on the Grand Bahama Island is the perfect 

place for you. Here, you can walk through 

the mangroves and even explore two caves 

before reaching the Gold Rock Beach at the 

end of the park. 

If you’re staying at the Atlantis, you can visit 

Aquaventure, the 141-acre water park where 

you can slide on some crazy waterslides or 

simply lay back in the lazy river. If you fancy 

underwater life and are not comfortable with 

diving or snorkeling, worry not as the Marine 

Habitat aquarium at the Atlantis features over 

250 species of marine life, including sharks 

and stingrays! 

Every island in Bahama is an untouched 

treasure and it is almost impossible for you to
