together raising

together raising standards (continued from previous page) “Despite spending increasing amounts of money on mobile phone plans, devices, TV packages, socialising and technology in general, people still spend very little in protecting themselves, their assets and their families as a proportion of their income” still working for Black Box which is testament to the team and the culture that we have built here. There are plenty of engineers available; however it is, as you would expect, the good ones who are in high demand. Roles that we are actively recruiting for at present are in the sales division - an executive and a senior member to head up the team. It would appear that currently they are really few and far between and we are hoping that the New Year brings the added impetus for people to look into their next career move. Black Box is an owner-managed company that has been operating for almost 40 years and I am part of the new senior management team driving the business forward after working on the operations side here for nearly 25 years. Most of our employees have been with us for over 15 years, which I think is a good indicator of the sort of business that we operate. We are very busy currently and want to continue growing organically and through acquisitions. As we move into this period of expansion the positions available will give the right candidates the opportunity to be part of that growth and the scope to grow with the role. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? We don’t really experience any unachievable customer requests, we always work with all customers whether residential, public sector or commercial to ensure that we have a complete understanding of the requirements. Our long history in the industry and the skills across these three sectors means that we always recommend and deliver the right systems and support. I have always been focused on delivering a level of customer service that I would personally expect (and I have very high standards), this is echoed throughout the workforce and I like to think it is second to none. This is echoed as a large majority of our customers have continued to work with us for over 15 years. What is the industry’s biggest myth? That people view security as high on their priority list when in fact a good number of people don’t take security seriously until they have experienced an issue. Despite spending increasing amounts of money on mobile phone plans, devices, TV packages, socialising and technology in general, people still spend very little in protecting themselves, their assets and their families as a proportion of their income. What will be the impact of smart/home automation on the security sector? I believe this will open a door for us all, however the industry needs to be mindful of internet sales and other non-accredited companies providing security solutions, which may not be compliant. This would have a totally adverse effect for both installers and clients. Online sales have opened the gateway for non-accredited systems on the market and people buying cheap systems will not have the same reassurance or protection as a purchase from a reputable accredited company. Even with the emergence of home automation where there is more ease of operating a decent security system remotely, the problems remain the same - if people are buying substandard equipment then there will still be issues. What would make your job easier? Accreditation is so important for the industry and the businesses operating within it. There needs to be clear regulations driven by the appropriate bodies and the insurance companies to ensure that all security and life safety systems are installed by a fully accredited company. What would be your ultimate fantasy security product? After spending 25 years working in the security industry I don’t really have any fantasies about specific products! Will England ever win the football World Cup again? Yes, most definitely, well you have got to keep hoping… What would you do if you won £25,000? I would take the family on a nice holiday and invest for the future. 40 www.psimagazine.co.uk
