Village Voice December 2017/January 2018 WOODLAND & GREEN SPACES This time of the year as the leaves turn gold and brown I cannot think of anything nicer than walking in the woods on a sunny morning with the rays filtering through the leaves before they drop off to become nourishment as part of nature's cycle. We held a couple of work parties at the beginning of October and November where we cleared out some of the drainage channels in preparation for the winter rains. This task is important to stop the paths scouring away as the rain runs off. There are a number of other tasks to do such as cutting back the sides of paths, cutting back the laurel and maybe repairing a post or two. We made the first full weekend of every month for a couple of hours on the Saturday and Sunday morning. Any help is welcome. We don't expect people to come every time but just one morning is a help. With no income we depend upon volunteers to maintain the wood and it is to their credit that many people I meet comment how good and tidy the wood looks. If you feel that you could give a little time occasionally we now have a new email address for volunteers. Send an email to commonwoodvolunteer@gmail.com and we will notify you of any volunteer events. It is amazing the amount of lost property that we find or sometimes do not find. Last year every glove we found we put on the tree along the Chalk path . Eight in total. A dog walker notified me that she had lost a lead and yet despite searching the wood. No sign. I found a bicycle with broken gears propped up against a tree near the main entrance. All I will say is that it is red and if you have lost such a bike I have it at home for safekeeping - it was put on Facebook with no response. A child with initial RJ has also lost a shoe. Generally if something is found it is hung from a tree nearby. It was lovely to see so many children in the wood during the half term. The Village Preschool takes their charges in for a forest school once a week to experience the wood. It would be great for parents to share that enjoyment and to continue the child's appreciation of nature. Mike Morley There has been a case of Alabama foot rot reported in the Hazlemere/ terriers area, and unfortunately a Dalmatian died. There appears to be no cure and there is lack of clarity on how it is transmitted or should be treated. The only thing we can say is to be vigilant and keep your dog under close control. Wash feet and legs after walking. The first sign of Alabama Rot is skin sores that have not been caused by a physical injury. These sores can present as lesions, swelling, a patch of red skin, or may be open and ulcer-like. The sores are most commonly found below the knee or elbow or occasionally on the stomach or face. Usually, this will cause localised hair loss and the dog will begin licking the wound. These lesions will be followed – between 2 and 7 days later – with outward symptoms of kidney failure: reduced appetite, fatigue, and vomiting. Affected dogs will also develop signs of severe depression, loss of appetite and vomiting, quickly accompanied by acute injury to the kidneys.
