CHARITY CHAMPION 

Rochdale’s singing jeweller, John Alexander, 

has always wanted to sing but only took it up 

seriously around five years ago. 

During this time his voice had helped to raise 

many thousands of pounds towards worthwhile 

causes throughout the Borough. Facebook has 

helped to raise his profile and some of you may 

have seen the posts of his performances 

recorded in his own living room at home. 

If you haven’t, they are extremely entertaining 

and worth a look. 

In November, John was presented 

with Rochdale Man of the Year 2017 

in recognition of his remarkable 

fundraising work.

The 

Mayor’s & Mayoress’ 

Charities 2018 

Firstly, I must emphasise what an honour it is to represent our unique 

borough of some 214,000 people. Something I remind myself of ever day. 

I must also thank my wife Christine for her support and injection of female common 

sense and empathy. We are a true team. 

Our mayoral year began with a wonderful mayor making ceremony surrounded by 

friends and family quickly followed by a jolt when we woke up in a London hotel the 

morning we were going to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party to discover 

22 young people had been killed in a bomb attack in Manchester. All of a sudden 

eating sandwiches on the lawn at Buckingham Palace seamed inappropriate and 

unimportant. We decided to travel back home but were directed to go straight to the 

vigil at Manchester Town Hall to represent Rochdale Borough at that moving and 

unforgettable event. 

The bread and butter of being the mayor is visiting community organisations, charities 

and businesses throughout the borough and what an education this has proved to be. 

I wish everyone could see the myriad of great things local people achieve everyday, 

often for little reward, if any. It really is a heart warming experience. 

One of the most important functions of the mayoralty is to raise money for local 

charities. This year we’ve chosen Springhill Hospice, Cancer Research, The Christie, 

and Heartbeat, which supports people who experience heart problems. We have also 

chosen to support Rochdale Shopmobility who provide mobility aids to visitors to our 

town and RCT a truly wonderful organisation that turns around the lives of people who 

are enduring many traumas and are desperate for any help or support. 

The money towards these charities will come from the mayor’s and mayoress’ 

charities events. 

All the events are to be held in Rochdale Town Hall.

Springhill Hospice - 

Hospice to Hospice Walk 

on Sunday 29th of April 

This popular event is a really relaxed, 

family orientated walk, with everyone 

going at their own pace. 

Individuals, families, groups of 

friends, work colleagues, dogs, 

prams and wheelchair bound 

supporters all really enjoy taking 

part. 7.25 miles is quite a distance 

but not too far to be daunting. 

Entry to this event costs just £7 

and all money raised goes directly 

to caring for patients diagnosed 

with a life limiting illness. Springhill 

Hospice supporters will set off from 

the beautiful grounds at 10.30 am 

on Sunday 29th April 2018 and 

finishes with hot soup and a sit 

down in the comfort of the Day 

Hospice.

Forged in Fire 

A story of blacksmiths and bonesetters 

Walking over the cattle grid at the top of Dewhirst Road 

reminds me of the theme tune to “Bonanza”, the TV 

sixties Western and with the amount of horses stabled 

and grazing in nearby fields, some locals affectionately 

nickname the area the “Ponderosa”. Indeed, horse 

owners have asked for Horse warning signs to be placed along this fast 

stretch of highway, subsequently, a request to the Council has been made. 

Back on “Shank’s Pony,” riding over Limersgate, 

skirting the foot of Brown Wardle and down into 

Whitworth Square, whilst most thirsty walkers head 

for the Red Lion. You can stop and go back in time, 

250 years to be precise, taking in, the locally 

quarried, stone buildings and check out the various 

blue plaques, which tell the remarkable story of 

how in 1764, a blacksmith called John Taylor not 

only sweated over a red hot forge as he shoed 

horses from far and wide. He also became probably the first ever “Super 

Vet” (Well before Noel on Channel 4) tending all sorts of animals, setting 

bones and administering potions. 

This led to Mr Taylor, who was first of a long line of Taylors, to practice 

medicine on the good folk of Whitworth, with the small village being 

described as being in the Parish of Rochdale. 

Word got round of the service being provided and the Blacksmith turned 

Doctor was soon receiving patients from much further afield with the 

Archbishop of Canterbury turning up for an appointment and the Bishop of 

Durham coming along for a tooth extraction. 

Legend has it that Dr Taylor still preferred horses and stopped halfway 

through the Bishop’s tooth pulling only to tend to a horse with Spavin 

(whatever that is) According to the dictionary is a disorder of a horse’s hock. 

Glancing around the Square, you can see the original buildings which made 

up this group of this Community health related practise, which has been 

replicated around the country, with the ‘Whitworth System’ being adopted in 

the United States of America. 

So from its humble origins of blacksmiths turned bonesetters and finally the 

now famous ‘Whitworth Horse Doctors’, you could say that this and much of 

today’s medical health systems were truly “Forged in Fire”!
