28 NZ GREYPOWER MAGAZINE » MARCH 2018 Leaving the world a little better than you found it More and more Starship supporters are appreciating the profound value and benefit of leaving a gift to the national children’s hospital in their wills. And more and more are becoming Guardian Angels by letting the Starship Foundation know they’ve done so too. Making a will is not about death….it’s about your life. What do you want to be remembered for? If you have not yet taken this step yourself, what’s involved? And how do you even go about including Starship Foundation in your will? The first point to stress, is that it’s much easier than you might think. And the second, is that your loved ones must come first. With that in mind, here’s our three step guide: Step One: talk to your loved ones. Discuss your plans with your family and friends first. Tell them why Starship is important to you and why you want to leave a gift to Starship in your will. Let them know that they will be taken care of first and foremost. That way there will be no surprises when the time comes. Step Two: talk to your solicitor. Call and tell them you want to leave a gift to Starship in your will. It’s that simple. They do it all the time. They will ask you what type of gift you want to leave: Residual, Percentage of Pecuniary (see below), and how much. If you already have a will you can easily add a codicil (an amendment). If you don’t they can prepare one for you. Step Three: talk to us. Letting us know of your intentions will help us to thank you and share with you the impact that your gift will have. And you will automatically become one of our treasured Guardian Angels - a special group of people who have pledged to look after the health and wellbeing of future generations of children. If you’re interested in leaving a gift to Starship in your will or becoming a Guardian Angel, for a confidential discussion please contact our Bequest Manager Karen Blake by phone or email: Phone: 09 375 3466 Mobile: 027 376 4211 email: kblake@adhb.govt.nz Three kinds of legacy gifts There are three different types of legacy gift you can make: A Percentage gift: you decide in advance what percentage of your estate you would like to go to the charity or charities of your choice, which means you are not committed to giving a set amount. A Pecuniary gift: you choose a specific sum of money, an item of property, or number of stocks or shares to be left to the charity or charities of your choice. A Residual gift: after providing for your loved ones, the remainder of your estate is left to your chosen charity or charities. Starship Guardian Angel Alison McDonald The joy of becoming a Guardian Angel As a mother of three grown up children and loving grandmother to five grandchildren, Alison McDonald has had plenty of trips to Starship over the years. But these experiences are just part of the reason Alison chose to become a Guardian Angel, by pledging to make a gift to Starship in her will. “I think when you get to my stage in life,” Alison explains, “you start to think, ‘well, my kids are raised, they’re doing well for themselves, I’ve supported Starship for years, but now the next generation is coming up, so what can I do for those kids?’ Because they’re the future.” Alison has now joined a profoundly treasured part of the Starship family. In fact, as far as the next generation of New Zealanders goes, we think of Guardian Angels as more of a national treasure. Bequests like Alison’s have the power to help and heal children you will never know. Bequests will help to pay for these children to benefit from tomorrow’s technology, tomorrow’s life-saving research and a new generation of specially trained staff who can nurture children’s spirits as well as their bodies. Alison is so motivated by the pleasure and satisfaction becoming a Guardian Angel has brought her, that she encourages all her friends to do the same. And she has a message for you too. “We won’t be here forever, so don’t get old first, sort it out now, because your bequest could save a child’s life,” she says. “ Starship is like the ‘mothership’ of children’s medical care in New Zealand. And like any good mother, she extends her love and care to all her children.”

Cape Bluffers Ride Barry Williams and Ray Hewlett may both be in their early 70s, but their pace of life certainly hasn’t slowed. The pair have recently ridden the length of the country to raise money for Tim Williams (paracyclist) and Paralympics New Zealand. Top of the Crown Range. NZ GREYPOWER MAGAZINE » MARCH 2018 29 Age is absolutely no barrier for Barry and Ray. Always up for an adventure, the friends love being active, so much so that they decided to take on one of the biggest rides possible, from Cape Reinga to Bluff via the West Coast of the country. With a long history of riding together, they decided the fundraising Cape Bluffers Ride was a worthy challenge for a great cause, and decided to split the profits 50/50 between Tim Williams and Paralympics New Zealand. Tim was just 19 years old when he was left a quadriplegic after a rugby accident in 1995. He began hand cycling in 2008 after borrowing a mate’s hand cycle and started off riding 10kms a day in jeans. He quickly established a goal of cycling 3650kms in the year and after just a few years in the sport, found himself hand cycling on the world stage. In 2013 Tim competed in the Matane paracycling world cup and at the World Championships in Baie-Comeau, both in Canada. He was well off the pace that year but returned to international competition in 2014 at the UCI Road Paracycling World Champs in Greenville, USA where he took out Bronze in the road race. Tim also competed in the H1 Time Trial, where he became the World Champion and exceeded his expectations in the process. “I went into it with the hope of getting onto the podium, but to win gold was pretty awesome.” He donned the rainbow jersey the following year and managed to pick up a pair of silver medals in the road race and the time trial. Tim missed out on the Rio Paralympics due to their being no medals offered in his class, something he hopes will change for Tokyo in 2020. In the meantime his attention turns to local competition and he says his training has been going to plan. “I have an event just out of Hamilton in early March, then I’ll be doing New Zealand age group nationals in Carterton where they run a para section in April. And I’ll take it from there, I would love to go to Road World Champs again.” The connection between Tim and Barry is strong. “Barry is my uncle. He first told me of this ride on Boxing Day 2017, I thought it was a great thing he was doing, but then Barry and Ray make it to the Bluff after 27 days cycling. he went on to say he was thinking of doing it to help me out and I was blown away!” Riding the length of the country is no mean feat and to complete it in your 70’s is something truly remarkable.
