48 the advertizer Kilmacolm Playgroup This month was chock full of fun. A visit from our local firestation caused much excitement among both young and old! We’ve also enjoyed singing, and tasting shortbread as part of our Burns celebrations. There has been plenty of beautiful Valentines artwork made for our lovely parents too. Sensory play has become a firm favourite at playgroup. Who doesn’t love to go a bit crazy with shaving foam?! Next month we’re exploring animals, numbers and lots, lots more! Playgroup runs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Houston Toddlers Group There was a lot of love at toddlers recently with lots of little ones making valentine cards and pictures to be sent to the special people in their lives. Dates for March crafts are 22nd for Mothers day and 29th for Easter crafting fun. Come along to showcase your artistic talent. Also we have a child free drink organised on Friday 23rd March, join us for a well deserved night off and some chat in the pub. We welcome all children age between 0-4 years old, together with their parents, grandparents or carers to join in with the games, crafts and play on offer every Thursday. The children can enjoy playing, making friends and of course snack time while the adults can catch up with a cuppa. We meet between 9.30am - 11.30am so come along when you are ready to the West Hall, Main street Houston PA67EL (next to the Carrick centre). We look forward to meeting you all. Langbank Playgroup What an amazing and fun filled place to be! At playgroup, children are offered the opportunity to develop their social skills, independence, creativity, numeracy and literacy skills. To add to this extensive list, the children also have the opportunity to develop their physical skills while participating in the Mini Kicks programme with Morton Football! What’s not to like, when all of this can be done through play?! Do you have a child aged between 2.5yrs to 5yrs old? Then why not let them come along and experience the fun! Everyone welcome from Langbank and surrounding areas. Playgroup is held on a Friday morning (term time) in Langbank Village Hall and we currently have SPACES AVAILABLE for children aged 2.5yrs to 5yrs. St. Fillan’s Primary School What a busy term we have had already in St. Fillan’s Primary School! As we are a very inclusive and welcoming school, we have been involved in lots of community events over the last few weeks and we would like to share a few of them with you. Fairtrade Coffee Morning - Having gained the prestigious status of being a ‘Fairtrade School,’ we take our responsibilities seriously in promoting the need for a more fair and just world. We invited our families and members of the community along to our Coffee Morning on Friday 2nd February and we were delighted by the support given from everyone who provided donations and who joined in the fun on the day. We are proud to announce that we raised £55 from the raffle for a Fairtrade hamper and a further £52.55 for MND Scotland. This charity was selected by the members of the Fairtrade Committee. Eco Warriors - Pupils in Primary 3/2 participated in a community litter pick with members of the Houston Community Litter Crew. Our litter busting heroes took to the streets armed with gloves, litter pickers, plastic bags and determination! The weather was kind and our pupils collected two bags of litter in an afternoon which was a great achievement. This initiative was part of the ‘Eco Spotlights’ that classes have been taking part in to raise the awareness of Eco issues. From our Pipe Band, piano duets, string duets, woodwind solos and poetry readings, it is fair to say that once again St Columba’s pupils have shown that they have exceptional talent stretching beyond the classroom. Continuing with our musical talent, families enjoyed renditions of Scottish poetry and songs at our Junior and Senior School Burns Suppers. We would also like to congratulate the pupils who have successfully auditioned for the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Scotland. On the sporting front our Transitus girls won the Inverclyde Primary Netball Spring Cup, playing 7 matches, winning 6 and drawing 1. Matthew Downie, Senior I, successfully passed the 1st Dan Black Belt Grading, making him the youngest Tei Karate student to achieve his black belt in Scotland. Our Senior School rugby and hockey teams sported Stonewall’s rainbow laces at a recent match to show their support for LGBT History Month. Junior and Senior School Swimming Galas took place at ON-X in Linwood and proved to be a lot of fun - full gala results can be viewed at www.st-columbas. org/news. Our Former Pupils’ and School rugby and hockey matches take place on Saturday 24th March. Please come along to support the teams at this annual event, it’s always good fun and well attended by the entire community. Hockey begins at 9.15am at the Astroturf and the rugby matches kick-off at 10.30am at Birkmyre Park. Home Safety & First Aid Workshops: Barratt/David Wilson Homes will be holding a number of Home Safety workshops in the area and on Monday 19th March they will be coming to St Columba’s Junior School. The workshops will cover tips and strategies on keeping younger children safe from the dangers that can lurk in the home, together with advice from St Andrews First Aid regarding administering CPR to children and dealing with choking incidents. There will be a workshop for parents at 7pm and 7.45pm, each lasting approximately 30 minutes, with time afterwards for questions. The workshops, which are free of charge, are open to the community and there are spaces for ten parents at each session. Spaces are limited so parents should email marketing@st-columbas.org to register their interest and whether they wish to attend from 7pm–7.45pm or 7.45pm - 8.30pm.
