Bridge of Weir United
Bridge of Weir 2008 Team Presentation Event took place at Old Ranfurly
Golf Course on 28th December. Following an exciting season where
the players stepped up to their first year of 7-a-side fixtures, the children
celebrated their success and effort in style with a two-course meal,
entertainment and the presentation of awards.
A few special awards were presented by the team coaches Jamie
McDonald, Gary Smith, Scott Fulton and Frankie O’Neill. Players’ Player
of the Year trophy, selected by his team mates, was awarded to Luca
Smith. Coaches Player of the Year trophy went to Louis Byrne and Most
Improved Player trophy was received by Matthew Wilson. Another merit
trophy went to Marcus McDonald.
Bridge of Weir Utd is open to boys and girls of all ages. The new season
starts in March, but new players are welcome to join any time. Like any
voluntary organisation, we desperately need adult helpers. In particular
we need coaches, which does require a regular commitment of a couple
of hours a week during the season, but it is incredibly rewarding as you
see the children develop. We need help in many other areas too, so
please get in touch if you would like to know more. We hold bi-monthly
meetings in Amaretto, at which parents are welcome to attend any time.
Many thanks to Amaretto for hosting us.
Please contact Joe Gibson on 07514 671904 or Ronnie Palin on 07584
infancy - yet another thing we need help with!
Apologies for the low-res photo, no other available
Biking Belles
Not been on the bike all winter (or slightly longer...), well this ride on
Sunday 4th March will be the perfect way to reconnect with the saddle.
Join us at 10.30am where we will set off from the Battery Park Pavilion
along the cycle path to the Kip Marina. The whole ride is flat and 99% on
path - the 50m that is on road can be avoided by simply walking the bike
on the pavement for a few minutes if you don’t want to go on the road at
all. And we will wait for everyone regardless if you walk this section or
cycle it.
The ride is 14 miles in total, 7 each way and it will take just over 2 hours.
We will also stop for a good rest and a coffee/ cake (optional but too
tempting to not partake if you ask me).
Please bring a pump, water and a refreshment, money (for a coffee
and cake) and spare inner tube/ puncture repair kit if you have them.
Appropriate clothing for the weather on the day is always sensible too.
Please note, this is not a ride for absolute beginners nor speedy cyclists,
we will keep a steady relaxed pace so we can have a chat as we go.
As always, please let us know if you will be joining us https://www.
Castle Semple Sailing Club
It would be fair to say that the sailing season during this winter has been
disappointing. Out of a possible 15 weeks of racing only 9 were held,
the wind being either non-existent or gale force, or the loch was frozen!
Hopefully conditions will improve shortly.
The cold snowy weather didn’t deter the competitors for the final races of
the TPWDS on 11 February. A racers were : Angus Winchester (Vortex),
Brian Young and Heather Evans (RS Vision), Doug McQuilken (Vareo),
Tony FitzGerald (RS600) and Mark Simmonds and Steve Cochrane in
the Hobie.
After setting sail into the loch, drama quickly began to unfold. Doug had
fallen someway behind, whilst Angus battled it out with Brian and Heather,
who had been helped by a timely gust. The results were as follows: first
- Doug (and Team Pam and Tony) (Enterprise, Vareo and Laser), second
- Angus (Vortex), third - Brian and Heather (RS Vision).
During lunch the snow arrived and Brian decided he wasn’t playing any
more. However the skies cleared, Jon Hasler rigged his Vago and off
they went, in slightly stronger winds than the morning.
Despite a pre race
capsize, Jon started
well, but approaching
buoy 8 he was caught
off guard and several
capsizes followed. At
end of the hour the snow
descended again. All
boats made it back to
the pontoon in time apart
from Jon, who accepted
a tow back. It’s been
claimed that had Jon stayed upright he would have won Series B -
maybe next time! Series B winners were: first - Doug (and Team Pam
and Tony) (Enterprise, Vareo and Laser), second - Angus (Vortex), third
- Jon (Vago).
