Gazebo planned
for Town Common
By Adam Swift
Editor
For the past several years,
the town’s summer concerts,
holiday events, and other
activities on the Town Common
have been held on a less
than attractive temporary
stage near the 1714 Meeting
House.
But that could change
thanks to the town’s historical
society, which is putting
up the money for a new gazebo
on the common.
The plan has the support
of the historical commission
and selectmen.
“The new gazebo would be
octagonal and 20 feet in diameter,”
said Steven Todisco
of the historical commission.
He said the proposed site
for the gazebo is near where
Summer Street meets Common
Street and in line with
the Center Congregational
Church.
“Future events would be
enhanced by having a public
address system built
into the structure as well
as electrical power,” said
Todisco. “The gazebo would
be financed by the historical
society through a stewardship,
which has been successful
in running the 1714
Meeting House.”
Rather than building the
gazebo on site, Todisco said
the project could be built by a
company like Walpole Fence
or Reed’s Ferry Sheds and
then placed on the site, said
Todisco.
Robert MacKendrick of
the historical society said the
gazebo would not be excessively
fancy, but would fit in
with the nature of the common.
He also said the society
would be happy to push forward
with the funding for the
structure.
“As the historical society
looks at this and realizes the
financial pressures on the
town, especially as it is something
that is nice to have
rather than a need … we
can afford to pay for it,” said
MacKendrick.
While MacKendrick
said the historical society
would pay for the gazebo, he
wouldn’t rule out donations
or fundraising to assist with
the costs.
“I think this will be a
great addition for the town,”
said Selectman Richard Dalton.
Selectman Phil Crawford
also said he supports plans
to build a gazebo, but suggested
the historical society
work with the public works
department to determine if
there would be any impact on
pedestrian traffic.
Lynnfield retains Connecticut
firm in opioid litigation
By Adam Swift
Editor
The town is retaining a
Connecticut law firm for a
potential class action suit
against opioid manufacturers
and distributors.
“On behalf of the board of
selectmen, I began to investigate
national, state, and
local litigation against major
opioid manufacturers in the
United States,” said Town
Administrator Robert Dolan.
State Attorney General
Maura Healey and a number
of municipalities are joining in
a lawsuit attempting to hold
opioid pharmaceutical companies
accountable for many
issues, including the cost to local
governments as a result of
their actions, Dolan said.
Selectmen approved Town
Counsel Thomas Mullen recommendation
that the town
retain the Connecticut-based
firm of Scott and Scott for a
potential class action suit
against the opioid pharmaceutical
companies.
“I’ve received a number of
solicitations from law firms
for the towns I represent,”
said Mullen. “Frankly, I’ve
been leery to get involved.
First, because I am not familiar
with the out-of-state
law firms that control the litigation,
and second, because
lawyers who specialize in
plaintiff class action suits are
generally an unsavory crew.”
But Mullen said there were
several factors that lifted
Stone and Stone well above
the typical “unsavory crew.”
He noted that Stone and
Stone have worked with the
Boston-based firm of Anderson
& Krieger, a well-regarded
firm that specializes in
municipal work.
Stone and Stone is representing
cities in five states
with pending opioid legislation,
including Springfield,
Worcester, and Haverhill in
Massachusetts.
“Their theory of the case is
that manufacturers and distributors,
knowing the dangers
of addiction, promoted
among doctors the idea of opioids
as routine pain relievers
rather than the extreme end of
life cancer medication that it
had been,” said Mullen. “This
led to a crisis that our town
and many others across the
country are suffering from.”
Tactically, Mullen said
Stone and Stone wants to
avoid the federal courts,
where hundreds of cases
have been consolidated before
a single judge in Ohio
who is urging a quick settlement
and refusing to move
the cases along.
“They want to file in the
state courts so they can control
the litigation,” Mullen said.
The offer from Stone and
Stone appears to be risk free,
with a pure contingent fee
arrangement, said Mullen.
Before
Get your car looking
great this winter!
The firm would take 22.5
percent of any recovery from
the pharmaceutical companies
as a fee. If there was not
any recovery, the firm would
forgive all expenses.
“The worst case scenario
for the town is zero, it’s not
negative,” said Mullen. “I like
the idea of an aggressive and
active posture. I would not
recommend a firm that would
want to park our case in Ohio
and take a cut of whatever
negotiation there is without
working on it.”
When asked by selectmen
about expectations of what the
town could get through a settlement,
Mullen was hesitant
to throw out a dollar figure.
But, he said any settlement
that could potentially pay for
some kind of employee in the
schools working on drug and
addiction issues would be a
huge win for the town.
Mullen said Stone and Stone
would look to file a lawsuit in
state court this year, possible
within the next few months.
“I honestly don’t see any
reason that we wouldn’t want
to be part of this,” said Selectman
Phil Crawford. “There is
only an upside for the town.”
Concern over positions
eliminated from school budget
I have been a teacher at
Lynnfield High School for fifteen
years. Having reviewed
Superintendent Tremblay’s
budget for the 2018-19 school
year, I find it very unsettling
that the media aide, a guidance
secretary, and the nurse’s aide
positions are to be eliminated.
If you come into the high
school on any day and at any
time, you will find these individuals
busy helping students
and teachers; processing
scholarship applications and
scheduling college interviews;
and updating and accessing
student health information.
They are doing their jobs
which enables the Library
Media Specialist, the Head
Guidance Secretary, and the
School Nurse to do their multifaceted
jobs. The efficient
running of these departments
and the enrichment programs
offered by these departments
at the high school are all due
to their positions.
The role of educators has
become very complicated and
schools have to fulfill many
multiple, faceted roles. Even
the Superintendent’s position
requires assistance, as
evidenced by the creation of
the position for a Director of
Teaching and Learning. Educators
cannot do these jobs
without assistance.
In order to save funds to
help maintain these three
individuals, I would suggest
withdrawing from the New
England Association of Secondary
Schools & Colleges
(It is interesting that schools
which have received accreditation
from this organization
have gone into state receivership:
Lawrence, Chelsea,
Holyoke) and email report
cards each quarter. The Town
of Lynnfield spent millions of
dollars on an athletic complex,
can it find $50,000 to keep
three individuals employed?
Sincerely,
Ernestine A. Struzziero
MOBILITY MATTERS
As our population ages, increasing numbers of older adults are availing
themselves of the use of canes and walkers to prevent falls and injuries.
While some seniors may feel that these mobility aids present a blow to their
vanity or social stigma, the potential benefits of canes and walkers should
override these concerns. To begin with, a cane or walker can help older
individuals with mobility limitations to keep moving despite orthopedic
problems, muscle weakness, neurological disorders, or other chronic
ailments that can slow them down. In addition, the added mobility that the
devices afford can help seniors reap the benefits of regular exercise. A
mobility device may spell the difference between walking for exercise or
suffering sedentary-induced health problems.
There are many assistive devices and mobility products that are allowing
seniors to get out and enjoy life almost as well as they did in their youth.
Canes and walkers provide seniors with increased stability and support.
Seniors also use them to relieve pressure on painful joints such as the knees
or hips due to arthritis or other degenerative joint diseases. For more information,
please call or visit VILLAGE PHARMACY in the Colonial Shopping
Center (781-334-3133).
HINT: When an older adult begins to feel nervous about the risk of falling,
it is time to initiate a discussion about mobility devices.
TRACKING SUCCESS IN LYNNFIELD
Kate Mitchell 9th in 800 at New Balance National indoor meet
By Anne Marie Tobin
NEW YORK -- If you are Lynnfield High
senior track star Kate Mitchell, it just keeps
getting better and better.
She began the weekend with a surprise
third place finish with fellow senior Juliana
Passatempo and freshman twins sisters
Ashley and Lauren Mitchell in the Emerging
Elites sprint medley relay at the New Balance
Nationals Indoor Championships at The
Armory Track and Field Center.
Sunday morning, she was back at The
Armory, bright and early, for the Girls
Championship 800. Mitchell cranked it up a
notch, running a career-best 2:10.60 to finish
ninth in a star-studded field of 23 of the best
high school runners in the nation, and just
missing All-American honors reserved for the
top-6 finishers.
The race was a redemption of sorts for
Mitchell, who finished 36th in the lower
Emerging Elites division as a junior last year.
“The whole weekend was just incredible,
but to finish top-10 in the championship division
was such a feeling of total satisfaction
after last year,” Mitchell said. “Last year was
not a good year at all. I peaked too early and
had a lack of proper trainign so I was determined
to be better prepared this year.”
Mitchell, running in the first of two unseeded
heats, came from behind to finish third,
then had to wait for the next heat to finish and
the seeded heat to finish some four hours later
before the final results were posted.
“I knew my heat would go out fast, and they
were even faster than I expected,” she said. “It
was kind of crowded at the start so I just did my
thing and let everyone else go out. I was 63 or
64 my first 400, then was 1:38 or so after 600,
which was right where I wanted to be.”
As she had in the sprint medley race on
Friday, Mitchell methodically made her move
with 300 meters to go and systematically
picked off all but two competitors by the time
she hit the finish line.
After that, it was just watch, wait and hope.
“It’s hard because when you are watching
it’s natural to hope that everyone running after
you slows down,” she joked.
Mitchell received another piece of good
news over the weekend.
“I just found out that our sprint medley team
qualified for the outdoor nationals in the championship
division, so that will be an awesome
experience to run with my sisters and Juliana,
plus you get cooler backpacks and stuff when
you are in the championship division.”
Next up for Mitchell is her final season
running track at Lynnfield before heading to
Boston College to run cross country and track.
“This finish gives me so much confidence
going back to Massachusetts meets,” said
Mitchell. “To have this under my belt, finishing
top-10 against the best runners out
there is just such a great thing when I think
about the outdoor season coming up.”
Kate Mitchell ran a career-best
2:10.60 in the 800.
Sprint medly relay team wins a bronze in emerging elite category
By Anne Marie Tobin
NEW YORK -- It started out as
just a group of four girls who just
wanted to have some fun in the Big
Apple.
By the time it ended, however,
they ended up living a dream that
none of them ever imagined could
happen.
Lynnfield High senior captains
Kate Mitchell and Juliana
Passatempo along with Mitchell’s
freshman twin sisters Ashley and
Lauren Mitchell ran the race of
their young lives Friday at the New
Balance Indoor Nationals Track
Championships at the Armory in
New York City, blazing their way to
a bronze medal in the Girls Emerging
Elites 1600 Sprint Medley Relay
with a time of 4:10.48. All four girls
set personal bests in their respective
legs, an amazing feat considering
this was the first time they had ever
run the race.
“We didn’t decide until two
weeks ago basically, that we should
try to qualify,” said Kate Mitchell,
who will be running cross country
and track at Boston College. “We
really were just happy to be here. It
was all about having fun as we already
thought we had the ultimate
reward in just qualifying and running
in a national meet as a team.
Third place was not even something
we ever thought about and will
never forget.”
Running in the fourth of five heats,
the Pioneers were in sixth place
after strong 200 legs by Passatempo
and Lauren Mitchell and the 400
leg by Ashley Mitchell. By the
time Ashley had handed the baton
to sister Kate, the Pioneers were a
good 10 seconds behind the leaders,
Wilson Memorial (N.Y.) and Eagles
Track (MA), who had taken the
race out at an extremely fast pace.
With 300 meters to go, Mitchell
made her move, and slowly picked
off every runner in front of her.
By the time she hit the finish line,
Kate Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell, Ashley Mitchell and Juliana Passatempo
finished third in the Emerging Elites 1600 sprint medley in New
York.
she set a PR by two seconds, and
lifted the Pioneers into first place
with one heat to go. Westerly R.I.
and the Andover Warriors duked it
out in the final heat, with Westerly
winning in 4:05.49 and Andover
(4:09.73) barely edging out the
Pioneers for the silver medal.
Mitchell’s split of 2:10.04 was
the fastest 800 of the 30 anchor legs.
Mitchell said she was right where
she wanted to be going into her leg.
“It’s always easier running from
behind because you see the whole
race in front of you,” she said.
For Passatempo, finishing third
in the nation was extra sweet.
A captain-elect of the Pioneers
girls basketball team, she opted to
run indoor track for the first time.
“It was the best decision I ever
made,” she said.
:“Running at nationals was such
an incredible experience and I was
so lucky to be able to part of such
an amazing team and run with the
Mitchell sisters, who are so talented.
It was exciting enough to
just qualify, but then to place third
For Mitchell, she had an added
first time in four years,” she said.
Weidman: The time was right to step down
By Steve Krause
and Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — When Neal
Weidman announced his resignation
as Lynnfield High football coach
last week, many wondered why this
wildly successful coach, who made
the Pioneers into one of the consistently
successful teams on the North
Shore, was stepping down.
Weidman says he just felt the
time was right but he also said he
wouldn’t be surprised if he second
guesses his decision in the future.
“I felt I was at a crossroads and
I have been trying to figure things
out for for a while, but honestly, I’m
still not 100 percent sure,” he said.
“There were several things that factored
into it, but I know that next fall
I will probably regret it and I know
it’s going to be painful. But it comes
down to, among other things that it
is a very time-consuming thing as
you have to be all in all the time.
Two hours after a good win when
you should be enjoying it, you are
already on
to figuring
Neal Weidman
out next
week’s game
with a huge
knot in your
stomach.
“I can say
that this is the
most difficult
thing I have ever done professionally
as my experience in Lynnfield
has been just awesome. It was a
ton of fun with the kids and coaches
who all worked very hard, but this
is just one of the times in a person’s
life that when you get to that point
and you have to walk away.”
Weidman made the announcement
in an email to the Lynnfield
football community March 6.
“I have taken great consideration
and care in making this decision,
and it was a difficult one because of
the value I place on being part of the
Lynnfield football community,” he
wrote in the email.
“Leading the Lynnfield Pioneers
for the past 10 seasons has been
among the most fulfilling things I
have done,” he said.
Lynnfield’s best season was in
2012, when the Pioneers won the
Baker Division of the Cape Ann
League (the first of six straight division
titles, including last fall as
well), and went to the Division 3A
Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium,
losing 21-7 to Bishop Feehan.
Weidman’s 10-year record at
Lynnfield was 78-34, for a .696
winning percentage -- the best in the
history of the town. He amassed 78
wins during that time, second only
to Bill Rodan (101).
Lynnfield also won seven CAL
Baker titles in Weidman’s 10 years.
Lynnfield came close to going to
another Super Bowl in 2014, going
11-1, defeating Winthrop, 35-14 in
the North final before bowing out to
Holliston in the state semifinal.
Pioneer teams under Weidman
were noted for their offenses. Last
year, the Pioneers scored 337 points,
fifth all-time in the school’s history.
Seven of the top 10 teams with the
most points were Weidman’s.
Last year was the 16th time
Lynnfield had eight or more wins in
a season, and six of those were in the
last 10 years under Weidman.
Weidman said, however, that the
game is more than wins and losses.
“Football extends far beyond the
game itself, and I will truly miss
coaching these great young men,”
he said. “I remain committed to
helping them in any way that I am
able.”
While Weidman said his most
cherished Lynnfield on field football
memory was the 2012 Super Bowl
game, he also had a few memories
he would rather forget.
“Playing at Gillette was incredible
and none of us will ever forget
what that was like, but of all the bad
experiences, the worst one was the
Austin Prep loss over at Reading in
2009,” he said. “That was painful
I think because a trip to the Super
Bowl was on the line and it was
only my second season, so that one
hurt, especially losing it in overtime.
We had the game, and then all of a
sudden, it was gone.
“But what I will remember most
about coaching in Lynnfield (is)
having a kid come up to me and
express their genuine appreciation,
that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
Weidman said he has not yet been
approached by anyone looking for
a coach, and that he is not looking
for any coaching opportunities right
now.
Whiskey-glazed cod the perfect meal for St. Patrick’s Day
By Linda Gassenheimer
Tribune News Service
Cod, a popular Irish fish, is
coated with an Irish whiskey
sauce for a quick dinner that is
perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or
for any quick dinner. Fresh chives
add flavor and green color to celebrate
the day.
Broccoli and Potatoes complete
the meal. Start the potatoes first
and the entire meal can be made
in 20 minutes.
Helpful Hints:
Look for wild-caught Atlantic
cod if possible, or use any type of
firm fish instead.
A quick way to chop chives is
to cut them with a scissors.
Any type of whiskey can be
used. Scotch whisky (spelled
without an e in Scotland) will
give a lighter taste.
Yellow or Yukon gold potatoes
can be used instead of red
potatoes.
12 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 MARCH 15, 2018
Associated Press
Here are 10 things you
may not know about St. Patrick.
1. Patrick was not Irish
Patrick was born around
450 A.D., just when Roman
troops withdrew from Britain.
His father was a gentleman
and a Christian deacon who
owned a small estate in a place
called Bannavem Taburniae.
Scholars aren’t sure where
this place was – it was probably
on the west coast around
Bristol, near the southern border
of modern Wales and England.
2. Patrick was a slave
Irish slave traders sailed
the waters off that same coast,
and one day they came ashore
to capture the teenage Patrick
and his neighbors, to sell
back in Ireland. Patrick spent
six years tending sheep in the
west of Ireland.
3. Patrick heard voices
While chasing sheep on the
hills, Patrick prayed a hundred
times a day, in all kinds of
weather. It paid off. One night
a mysterious voice called to
him, saying, “Look, your ship is
ready!” Patrick knew he wasn’t
hearing sheep. The time was
right for his escape.
4. Patrick refused to
‘suck a man’s breasts’
Patrick made his way to Ireland’s
east coast and sought passage
on a ship bound for Britain.
The captain, a pagan, didn’t like
the look of him and demanded
that Patrick “suck his breasts,”
a ritual gesture symbolizing acceptance
of the captain’s authority.
Patrick refused – instead he
tried to convert the crew.
For some reason, the captain
still took him aboard.
5. Patrick had visions
One night Patrick dreamed
that Satan tested his faith by
dropping an enormous rock
ST. PATRICK’S DAY SECTION
10 things to know about the real St. Patrick
978-839-3628
978-930-2639
on him. He lay crushed by its
weight until dawn broke, when
he called out, “Helias! Helias!”
– the name of the Greek sun
god. The rock disappeared.
Patrick took it as a kind of
epiphany. He later wrote:
“I believe that I was helped by
Christ the Lord.”
Patrick had other peculiar
visions, too. Back home at Bannavem
Taburniae, he was visited
by an angel with a message
from the Irish: “We beg you,
Holy Boy, to come and walk
again among us.” He trained
as a bishop and went back to
Ireland.
6. Patrick did something
unmentionable
Years into his mission, someone,
it seems, told a dirty secret
about Patrick to his fellow bishops.
“They brought up against
me after thirty years something
I had already confessed
… some things I had done one
day - rather, in one hour, when I
was young,” he wrote.
Patrick did not tell us what he
did – worship idols? Engage in a
forbidden sexual practice? Take
gifts from converts?
Whatever it was, Patrick retrospectively
understood his zealous
Irish mission to be penance
for his youthful sins. While he
spread Christianity around Ireland,
he was often beaten, put
in chains or extorted. “Every day
there is the chance that I will be
killed, or surrounded, or taken
into slavery,” he complained.
7. Patrick duelled
with druids
Two centuries after his death,
Irish believers wanted more
exciting stories of Patrick’s life
than the saint’s own account.
One legend (written 700 A.D.)
described Patrick’s contest with
native religious leaders, the druids.
The druids insulted Patrick,
tried to poison him and engaged
him in magical duels – much like
students of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts
– in which they competed
to manipulate the weather, destroy
each other’s sacred books
and survive raging fires.
When one druid dared to blaspheme
the Christian God, however,
Patrick sent the druid flying
into air – the man dropped to
the ground and broke his skull.
8. Patrick made
God promise
Another legend from around
the same time tells how Patrick
fasted for 40 days atop a
mountain, weeping, throwing
things, and refusing to descend
until an angel came on God’s
behalf to grant the saint’s outrageous
demands. These included
the following: Patrick
would redeem more souls from
hell than any other saint; Patrick,
rather than God, would
judge Irish sinners at the end
of time; and the English would
never rule Ireland.
We know how that last one
worked out. Perhaps God will
keep the other two promises.
9. Patrick never
mentioned a shamrock
None of the early Patrician
stories featured the shamrock
– or Irish seamróg – which is a
word for common clover, a small
plant with three leaves. Yet children
in Catholic schools still
learn that Patrick used a shamrock
as a symbol of the Christian
Trinity when he preached to the
heathen Irish.
The shamrock connection
was first mentioned in print by
an English visitor to Ireland in
1684, who wrote that on Saint
Patrick’s feast day, “the vulgar
superstitiously wear shamroges,
3 leav’d grass, which they
likewise eat (they say) to cause
a sweet breath.” The Englishman
also noted that “very few
of the zealous are found sober
at night.”
10. Patrick did not drive
the snakes out of Ireland
As for the miraculous
snake-charming attributed to
Patrick, it could not have happened
because there were no
snakes in pre-modern Ireland.
Reptiles never made it across
the land bridge that prehistorically
linked the island to the
European continent.
Most likely, the miracle was
plagiarized from some other
saint’s life and eventually added
to Patrick’s repertoire.
Party-goers on March 17
need not worry about ancient
historical details, though.
Whatever the truth of Patrick’s
mission, he became one of the
three patrons of Ireland, along
with Sts. Brigit and Columba
– the latter two were born in
Ireland.
