a history of diabetes. Emphasis is placed on assessment of the diabetic patient including<br />

blood glucose analysis. Administration of medication related to diabetic emergencies is also<br />

This training program for nurse assistants meets requirements of the Missouri Omnibus<br />

Nursing Act. The course provides the required 75 hours classroom instruction and 100<br />

hours of supervised on-the-job training. <strong>Class</strong> meets twice a week for 20 sessions; each four<br />

hours in length. The 100 hours of on-the-job training are in addition to the scheduled class<br />

time. Course content includes training in basic nursing skills, fire safety, disaster training,<br />

nursing home resident safety and rights, the social and psychological problems of nursing<br />

home residents, methods of caring for mentally confused residents such as those wich<br />

Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, food service, pesonal care, elimination, restorative<br />

nursing, infection control, and special procedures. Upon successful completion of the course,<br />

the student is eligible to take the final examination. A strict attendance policy is enforced<br />

throughout this training. To enroll in this state approved training program the student must<br />

be employable in a skilled nursing facility or intermediate care facility in direct resident care.<br />

This will be assured by verification with the Family Care Safety Registry Worker Registration,<br />

<strong>St</strong>ate Register for Nurse Assistants, Exclusion Database-Health and Human Services,<br />

Office of <strong>In</strong>spector General (OIG) and Excluded Parties Listing System (EPLS). Prerequisites:<br />

<strong>In</strong>termediate proficiency in English or higher is recommended. Family Care Safety Registry<br />

Worker Registration from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (original<br />

required at time of registration). Application and directions can be found online at www.dhss.<br />

mo.gov. Register in person only in Continuing Education at Forest Park G-329. At the time<br />

of registration the student must present a Family Care Safety Registry Worker Registration<br />

letter from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Letter can not be older<br />

and will provide 90 hours of combined classroom instruction, lab training and practicum<br />

environment care, documentation, nutrition and fluid intake, vital signs and body functions,<br />

infection control basics, body mechanics, abuse and neglect reporting, psycho-social aspects<br />

of aging, communication with clients, families, agencies, and co-workers, basic medication<br />
